Module 3 Discussion 3 Interview through electronic mail with St Francis Trauma Nurse, Ms Nancy
Dickerson located in the Emergency Department at Woodmen Road Colorado Springs, Colorado
80922

Due to such short notice of this project i was unable to set up an interview face to face with any
Healthcare Nurse that had experience or first hand knowledge of human trafficked victims or
survivors and by my luck ducks I was able to generate five questions I did not know the answer to
once finished I emailed the hospital the sheet and awaited the nurses responses. But before we begin
I would like to share those five interesting questions I have drafted up and they go something like this:

1. What services and referrals does COVA provide for their clients?

2. How do you document and report suspected cases of human trafficking?

3. What are some of the challenges and barriers you have experienced working with trafficked
survivors?

4. What are some of the self-care practices you follow?

5. What are the requirements to get assistance from COVA?

Now that you have had a chance to view my questions, did anyone have any objections before we
continue to move right along?

Once these questions were answered and returned back to me via email I then had to brainstorm so I
will return back shortly but until then here are the answers provided back to me in regards to my
questions. Enjoy!

After looking over the answers to the questions i had provided her with I went on to

summarize what i believe to have learned all about the several types of referrals and

vouchers this helpful place of service gives to their clients in need these referrals range from

housing and shelter vouchers, food vouchers that come with delivery services, clothing

referrals for adults and children in need to hygiene kits to take care of daily hygiene and if

that's not exceptional to clients that they can even get assistance with transportation

services and financial assistance to help with car repairs and bus passes for students. When

you couldn't think of anything else an organization assists clients with the list continues to

go on from laundry vouchers to wash clothes weekly to stay on top of day to day life in fresh

smelling attire or maybe it is to job search, whatever it is used to achieve it works by me!

They even offer prepaid cell phones, ride shares for the elderly that have appointments or
errands to correlate day to day and for clients that find themselves not being able to afford

rent they even can help with up to three months of monetary assistance to pay your rent.

Many important aspects were talked about in our brief emailing but overall the root causes

we spoke of i was already aware of but the thought of these crimes really existing or going

on in Colorado really spooks me because this hits so close to home for ourselves, our loved

ones and our friends this could happen to anybody at the blink of an eye that's why it is so

important to learn the warning signs and to pay close attention to your surroundings and the

company you keep at all times. Since the start of this course I have began to notice

television shows discussing human trafficking like the world is in tune and is really aware of

this global crisis that continues to plague the United States and other surrounding countries.

The dandy clinic offers therapy, counseling and all mental health services as well as

medication, wellness checks and health screens , legal assistance, goal setting as well as

safety planning and advocacy and coordination of care.

OFFERS;

Crisis intervention services such as 24/7 hotline, emergency response and safety relocation.

Victims compensation assistance such as help with filing of claims, and appealing decisions.

Victims rights education and enforcement, informing the victim of their rights, assists with

obtaining of protection orders, and even accompanies survivors to their court preceding.

All members of COVAS program are required by law ( C.R.S. 19-3-304 ). To report child

abuse/neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, caretaker abuse, exploitation of at risk elders

and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and allegations of imminent

danger and risk. To report a tip or concern all callers can contact the Trafficking Hotline 24/7

at 1-888-373-7888 or dial 911 in case of an emergency or text 233733 or chat via

HTTP://WWW.human trafficking.org/chat. The Trafficking Hotline does not release any

information about a caller this includes to law enforcement or service providers, and will not

confirm that a specific individual has or has not called the hotline unless the caller provides

the Trafficking Hotline with his/her explicit consent we will inform the appropriate authorities
of situations that reference the suspected abuse of a minor, potential harm to oneself or

harm to others, or situations where we are required by law to report. When callers call in to

the hotline they are not required to say their name or give any personal information about

themselves, calls are never recorded and the use of caller id is only used in rare

circumstances where the caller is in immediate danger. I will say that this information i

learned of today was of value to me in which i was already aware of most of it so what i

learned from this was about this group and ways i can spread the word in my community

and at the store or even at school and to not be a fool and pay attention and know the signs

and red flags to help somebody who may one day need your help.
