Time Speed and Distance

(Relative Speed)
Concept :

1. Speed Time and Distance

Speed = (Distance/Time)
Time = (Distance/Speed)
Distance = (Speed x Time).

2. km per hr to m per sec conversion x km/hr = (x*5/18) m/sec.

3. m/sec to km/hr conversion x m/sec = (x *18/5) km/hr.
Relative speed:

● We can define relative speed as the speed of a moving body with respect to another. When two
bodies are moving in the same direction, the relative speed is computed by their difference. But
when to bodies are moving in the opposite direction, the relative speed is calculated by adding
the speed of both the bodies.

● If two people / objects are moving in same direction with speeds x km / h and y km / h (x > y),
then their relative speed would be
(x – y) km / h

● If two people / objects are moving in opposite direction with speeds x km / h and y km / h, then
their relative speed would be
(x + y) km / h
Example :

● If two persons are moving at 10 km/h and 20 km/h in opposite directions

Relative speed = 10 + 20
Relative speed= 30 km / h
i.e., the distance between them after one hour would be 30 km.

● Similarly, if they were moving in the same direction

Relative speed = 20 – 10
Relative speed = 10 km / h
i.e., the distance between them after one hour would be 10 km.
Question: 01

Walking with 3/4 of his usual speed, Sachin covers a certain distance in 2 h more than the
time he takes to cover the distance at his usual speed. Find the time taken by him to cover
this distance with usual speed.

A. 5h
B. 6h
C. 9h
D. 4h

Answer:B
Explanation:

Let the distance = D

and usual speed = V
According to the question,
D/(3V/4) - D/V = 2
∴ D/V = 3 x 2 = 6
Time taken to cover the distance with usual speed = 6 h
Question: 02

Two trains running in the same direction at 40 kmph and 22 kmph completely pass one
another in 1 minute. If the length of the first train is 125 metres, the length of second train is ?

A. 125 m
B. 150 m
C. 175 m
D. 200 m

Answer: C
Explanation:

Relative speed of the train = (40 - 22) km/hr = 18 km/hr

Relative speed of the train in m/sec = 18 x (5/18) = 5 m/sec.
Let the length of 2nd train be L meters.
Then, (125 + L) / 5 = 60 sec.
⇒ 125 + L = 300
⇒ L = 175
∴ Length of second train = 175 meters
Question: 03

A 150 meter long train crosses a man walking at the speed of 6 kmph in the opposite direction
in 6 seconds. The speed of the train in km/hr is ?

A. 66
B. 84
C. 96
D. 106

Answer:B
Explanation:

Let the speed of the train be v km/hr

Relative speed of the train = (v + 6) km/hr = [(v + 6) x 5/18] m/sec
∵ 150/6 = (v + 6) x (5/18)
⇒ 5v + 30 = 450
∴ v = 84 km/hr
Question: 04

A train is running at the rate 40 kmph. A man also is going in the same direction parallel to the
train at the speed of 25 kmph. If the train crosses the man in 48 sec, the length of the train is ?

A. 50 meters
B. 100 meters
C. 150 meters
D. 200 meters

Answer:D
Explanation:

Relative speed of the train = (40 - 25) km/hr = 15 x (5/18) = 25/6 m/sec
∴ Length of the train = (48 x 25) / 6 = 200 meters .
Question: 05

A train of length 150 meters takes 10 seconds to pass over another train 100 meters long
coming from the opposite direction. If the speed of the first train be 30 kmph, the speed of the
second train is ?

A. 54 kmph
B. 60 kmph
C. 72 kmph
D. 36 kmph

Answer:B
Explanation:

Relative speed of both trains = (150 + 100)/10 = 25 m/sec = 25 x (18/5) = 90 km/hr

∴ Speed of second train = (90 - 30) = 60 km/hr .
Question: 06

The distance between two cities A and B is 80 km. A motorcycle rider starts from A towards B
at 7 am at a speed of 10 km/hr. Another motorcyclist starts from B towards A at 8 am at a
speed of 25 km/hr. At what time will they cross each other?

A. 10 am
B. 20 am
C. 15 am
D. 25 am

Answer:A
Explanation:

In one hour, the earlier rider covers a distance of 10 km.

The distance between the two = 80 – 10 = 70 km.
Hence, the two riders approach each other with a relative speed of 10 + 25 = 35 kmph.
The time taken = 70/35 = 2 hrs. Therefore, they meet each other at (8 + 2) = 10 am.
Question: 07

Two trains start at the same time from two stations and proceed towards each other at the
rate of 20 km/hr and 25 km/hr respectively. When they meet, it is found that one train has
traveled 80 km more than the other. Find the distance between the two station is

A. 750 km
B. 720 km
C. 680 km
D. 800 km

Answer:B
Explanation: 07

In one hour, one train travels 5 km more than the other. The trains meet in 80/5 = 16 hours.
Therefore, the distance = (20 + 25) x 16 = 720 km.
Question: 08

Two trains start at the same time from Aligarh and Delhi and proceed towards each other at
the rate of 16 km/hr and 21 km/hr respectively. When they meet, it is found that one train has
traveled 60 km more than the other. The distance between the two stations is

A. 420 km
B. 450 km
C. 444 km
D. 460 km

Answer:C
Explanation: 08

Both the trains are coming closer to each other by (21 – 16), i.e., 5 km every hour.
They would meet after 60/5 = 12 hrs. Hence, the distance between the 2 stations = (21 + 16) x
12 = 37 x 12 = 444 km.
Question: 09

A starts from X at 9:00 am and reaches Y at 1:00 pm. B starts from Y at 9:00 am and reaches
X at 3 pm. At what time do the two meet?

A. 2.4 hrs
B. 2.2 hrs
C. 4.6 hrs
D. 3.2 hrs

Answer:A
Explanation:

The above question can also be solved by assuming the distance to be the lcm of the time
taken by them.
i.e. distance = LCM (4, 6) = 12 km.
So, their speeds will be 12/4=3 kmph and 12/6 = 2 kmph respectively.
Therefore, their relative speed = 3+2 = 5 kmph.
Hence, the time taken by them to meet = 12/5 = 2.4 hrs

Navjivan Express from Ahmedabad to Chennai leaves Ahmedabad at 6:30 am and travels at
50 km per hour towards Baroda situated 100 km away. At 7 : 00 am Howrah-Ahmedabad
Express leaves Baroda towards Ahmedabad and travels at 40 km per hour. At 7 : 30 Mr.
Shah, the traffic controller at Baroda realises that both the trains are running on the same
track. How much time does he have to avert a head-on collision between the two trains?

A. 15 minutes
B. 20 minutes
C. 25 minutes
D. 30 minutes

Answer:B
Explanation: 11

The distance between Ahmedabad and Baroda given is 100 Km

Navjivan express starts at 6:30 am at 50 Km/hr and Howrah expresses starts at 7:00 am at 40
Km/hr.
Therefore, the distance covered by Navjivan express in 30 minutes (by 7 am) is 25 Km/hr.
Hence, at 7 am, the distance between the two trains is 75 Kms and they are travelling in
opposite direction with a relative speed of 50+40=90 Km/hr.
So, the time taken them to meet is 75/90 .60 =50 min.
Also, the problem was realized after thirty minutes. Therefore, the time left to avoid collision is
50-30 = 20 minutes
Question: 12

Two cars A and B start simultaneously from a certain place at the speed of 30 km/h and 45
km/h, respectively. The car B reaches the destination 2 h earlier than A. What is the distance
between the starting point and destination?

A. 90 km
B. 180 km
C. 270 km
D. 360 km

Answer:B
Explanation:

Let the time taken by car B to reach destination is T h.

So, the time taken by car A to reach destination is (T + 2) h.
Now, S1T1 = S2T2
⇒ 30(T + 2) = 45 x T
⇒ 30T + 60 = 45T
⇒ 15T = 60
∴T=4h
Question: 13

Two vehicles are travelling from the same location at the speed of 6 km/hr and 4 km/hr
respectively. Calculate the distance between the vehicles after 10 minutes given that both
vehicles are travelling in the same direction.

A. 333.3 m
B. 453.4 m
C. 724.3 m
D. 363.5 m

Answer:A
Explanation:

The relative speed of the vehicles when they move in the same direction
= (6 – 4) km/hr
= 2 km/hr
Total time taken = 10 minutes
Therefore distance travelled = speed × time
= (2 × 10/60) km
= 1/3 km
= 1/3 × 1000 m
= 333.3 m
Question: 14
