 IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION IN THE WORK PLACE

Workplace communication is the process of exchanging information, both verbal and non-verbal, within
an organization. It can also be referred to as the communication that takes place among people in an
organization or at the place of work. Communication in the workplace can be either your best friend or
your worst enemy. It will improve your overall workplace culture. Good solid organizational
communication eliminates barriers and resolve problems. There are many means of communication
hence to be an effective and valuable member of your workplace it is important that you become skilled
in all the different methods of communication that are appropriate.

In every work setting there is need for effective communication. It is very important because
communication increases productivity and It assists everyone to run an organization without any
problems. It gives people the ability to get ahead in any profession; if you are able to express yourself
clearly it reflects your confidence and your knowledge on particular task.

Communication is an integral part of any society. The work place will be more enjoyable and any
unfavourable situations can be handled favourably with effective communication.

In a workplace setting, people must interact with one another in ways that will get the job done
effectively and in ways that will maintain the relationship of the employees. In order to work efficiently,
the leaders e.g. bosses must be able to communicate to their workers what is necessary and needed. If
they are not clear, there will be problems or mistakes that might cause the company or organization
great losses, in terms of time or money. The leaders should communicate to the employees in a way
that is not anger inciting or in a less respectful manner because the employees will not be happy and
this might be reflected in how they work, therefore decreasing productivity in the workplace.

For an effective work environment effective communication in the workplace is necessary. Productivity
decreases and everyone gets stressed if people do not communicate effectively. Some of the more
common problems that prevent effective communication can be overcome by simply minimizing them
or even eliminating them. When these things are dealt with, the organization can function more

efficiently, and the work environment is much more pleasant for everyone. Some of the more notable
communication issues that should be addressed are: Sarcasm, Gossip, Tantrums and Self-centeredness.

These situations show how effective communication is very important in almost all settings. Any
organization can be made more productive by effective communication. In fact, effective
communication is not only necessary in the office but more importantly, in day-to-day life. It is
important to deal with other people with respect for their abilities, personal space and self-worth. After
all, we expect no less for ourselves.

Effective workplace communication ensures that organizational objectives are achieved.


Workplace communication is tremendously important to organizations because it increases productivity
and efficiency. Ineffective workplace communication leads to communication gaps between employees,
which causes confusion, wastes time, and reduces productivity. Misunderstandings that cause friction
between people can be avoided by communicating effectively.

Communication is the key especially in an organization where people with different
perspectives try to work together. As a result, conflicts may occur and problems
may arise. Only by communicating effectively can one resolve the conflicts at the
workplace or otherwise. The communication channels should have scope for
communicating and clearing the air with colleagues.

By delivering messages clearly, there is no room for misunderstanding or alteration of


messages, which decreases the potential for conflict. In situations where conflict does arise,
effective communication is a key factor to ensure that the situation is resolved in a respectful
manner.

2. Ineffective communication can result in communication breakdown

The outcome resulting from communication breakdown could be disastrous, communication


breakdown could lead to accident in a workplace which might result to lost of lives and
properties, result to losses to organizations etc. Not well communicated misunderstanding
among individuals could destroy good relationship which ordinarily could have been prevented
if communication was effective hence communicators should always strive to be effective
communicators in order to prevent the negative consequences that comes with communication
breakdown.

3. It helps with decision making

Effective communication helps to facilitate the process of decision making as it is devour of


ambiguity. Instructions are given and executed easily with effective communication.
