AUTHORS: Jeanette Villanueva, Andrea H. Meyer, Marcel Miché, Hanna Wersebe, Thorsten
Mikoteit, Jürgen Hoyer, Christian Imboden, Klaus Bader, Martin Hatzinger, Roselind Lieb,
Andrew T. Gloster

HYPOTHESES: (Hypothesis 1) It was hypothesized first that participants diagnosed with MDD
or SP would show a lower frequency of face-to-face social interactions than participants without
these diagnoses (control group, CG), whereas participants diagnosed with MDD or SP would
show a higher frequency of technological social interactions, i.e., phone and internet/chat not
requiring face-to-face contact.
Second, it was hypothesized that emotions impact the frequency of the social interactions across
the different types of social interaction. The direction of the relationship was not specified a
priori for NA (Hypothesis 2a) or for PA (Hypothesis 2b).
Third, it was hypothesized that affect (both PA and NA) would interact with diagnostic group
status and impact the frequency of social interactions across the different interaction types for
NA (Hypothesis 3a) and PA (Hypothesis 3b).

TYPE OF RESEARCH: Quasi-Experimental Research

VARIABLES/KEY WORDS: social interaction, major depressive disorder, social phobia,
affect, technology
INSTRUMENTS/SOURCES OF DATA: Event-Sampling Methodology (ESM). During this
phase of the study, participants were asked to carry a smartphone, which was, for data security
reasons, provided by the research team.

Factors Affecting Social Exclusion, Friendship Quality, Social Competence and Emotion
Management Skills and the Effect of Problem Behaviors on Related Characteristics in
Adolescents

Authors: Meral Sert Ağır

Discussion:
This study tackles about the changes encountered by many adolescents as they put social
and environmental aspect at the center of their life. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the
predictive value of the scale scores associated with the factors that affect Adolescents' social
inclusion, friendship quality, social skills, and emotional regulation abilitiesm, smoking,
drinking, being unhappy, feeling hopeless, and self-harming are examples of problematic
behaviors. According to the research on social exclusion, those who have smoker friends, those
who have unkind friends, those who have trouble getting along with their peers, and those who
have unfavorable attitudes toward others Those who are interested in social events and
perceptions of their looks have a stronger impression of social isolation. Alcohol usage was
reported to decrease as a result of social marginalization. The existence of a smoker in the family,
having excellent relationships with their peers, and being interested in social activities were all
found to have an impact on social competence. However, there was no evidence of a relationship
between these factors and problem behaviors. The intimacy component was shown to be
influenced by having predominantly smoker friends, getting along well with peers, and
occasionally or occasionally facing economic difficulties in the household, per the findings on
the factors affecting the quality of friendship. It was found that the security dimension had a
reducing effect on alcohol use, negative moods, and self-harm, whereas the friendship quality
and intimacy had an increasing effect on these variables.
The findings highlighted the significance of peer interactions and teenagers' capacity to
manage strong emotions. Adolescents struggle to manage interpersonal interactions in order to
address their behavioral and adaptive issues. The goal of this study was to contribute to the
reduction of self-harm behaviors, which are more common in situations of abuse and neglect,
and which also increase smoking and alcohol consumption.
