1 Introduction
The Power Quality Software (PQS) is used to analyse power quality issues relating to
Harmonic Distortion, Interruptions and Sags & Swells, allowing utilities to address the cause
of these factors before they degrade line assets or trigger penalties from regulatory bodies.

Power Quality Data captured by the OSM range of Automatic Circuit Reclosers (ACR) and
associated RC controllers’ internal memory can be uploaded to a PC running PQS.

Oscillography Data
The Recloser Controller (RC) can capture an oscillogram of the waveform when a specific
event occurs such as a trip or a close. The amount of waveform captured prior to the trigger
can be configured by the user. This ranges from 0 to 80% of the capture prior to the trigger
point. The data can be used to analyse power quality fluctuations.

Harmonics Data
Harmonics are waves which have frequency multiples of the fundamental frequency. The RC
measures Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), Total Demand Distortion (TDD) and Harmonics
Voltages and Currents up to the 15th Harmonic.

Long and Short Duration Interruptions Data

The RC stores information relating to long and short duration interruptions. This information
is used to calculate SAIDI (System Average Duration Index), SAIFI (System Average
Interruption Frequency Index) and MAIFI (Momentary Average Interruption Frequency
Index). Both long and short interruptions are based on the Loss of Supply Detection (LSD).

Sags and Swells Data

The RC records voltage variations (sags & swells) occurring outside a user set period of
time. Sags & Swell voltages are based on the phase to ground voltages.

5.3 Harmonics Bar Diagram

By clicking the harmonics button, the application uses the Bartlett’s method to calculate the
Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on the oscillography data (if a region is selected, it calculates
for that region) and displays a floating top window with a bar diagram with distortion level for
15 harmonics for selected channels.

Figure 12: Harmonics Bar Diagram

Each harmonic frequency is a multiple of the fundamental frequency. If, for example, the
fundamental frequency is 50Hz then the harmonic frequencies are 100Hz, 150Hz,...., 750Hz.
If the fundamental frequency is 60Hz then the harmonics would be 120Hz, 180Hz,.…,900Hz.

Distortion
Distortion values can be displayed as:
 Peak values (V,A)
 RMS values (V,A RMS)
 Percentage (%).

Behaviour
A user can change the behaviour of the output by:
 hiding the maximum magnitude.

16
NOJA-7072-07
5.4 Harmonics Direction
By clicking the “harmonics directions” button, the application displays a floating top window
showing harmonics directions for the selected phase.

The Harmonics Directions feature is used to understand the source of the harmonics. For
example if the power flow for a particular harmonics is in a forward or reverse direction it may
help the user determine if the source of the harmonics is coming from the network or from
the customer.

Figure 13: Harmonic Direction

Behaviour
A user can change the behaviour of the output by:
 hiding the maximum magnitude
 showing the frequency of each point.

18
NOJA-7072-07

5.5 Opening Oscillography file from a third party tool

When uploading Oscillography data which was created using a third party tool, the following
window will appear. Data must be normalized before displaying.

Figure 15: Normalization of a third party file

To normalise data, the user has to specify the following parameters:

 internal channels to support voltages/currents
(PQS only supports Va,b,c,r,s,t and Ia,b,c,n)
 time zone
 scale factors for voltages/currents.

Use the scale to account for transformer ratios in the COMTRADE data, or disparities in
measurement scaling. A 1000:1 transformer would register 1kA as 1A, and thus a scale of
1000 is appropriate where data is acquired after a 1000:1 transformer conversion.

19
NOJA-7072-07
When data has been normalised, it will be displayed on the Oscillography window. Please
note that third party data cannot be saved to a device and general capture information will
not be displayed.

20
NOJA-7072-07

6 Harmonics
Harmonics data can be accessed from a device, from the library list or from a harmonics data
file. Harmonics data will be displayed as shown below.

Figure 16: Harmonics Data

The Harmonic window displays:

 a chart showing harmonic distortion (%) over time

The chart can show distortions of triggered harmonics, maximum harmonics and THD/TDD

 a list displaying the details for all triggered events

Details include: the time the trigger occurred, the channel on which it occurred, the triggered
harmonics, Max hrm (%), THD/TDD (%) and base Freq (Hz).

 a bar chart displaying the values for all other harmonics recorded at the time of a
particular trigger event.
The user can click on a different event in the list to view the corresponding bar chart for that
event.

Harmonics are contaminant waves which have frequency multiples of the fundamental power
frequency. These waves corrupt the integrity and consistency of the power supply voltages
and currents. Harmonics cause damage on the network as they present power in an
unusable form.

The RC utilises what is known as a “Fast Fourier Transform” or FFT algorithm to analyse the
energy flowing through the device, to provide exact values for both the harmonic frequency
and its magnitude and thus being able to calculate the harmonic distortion.

21
NOJA-7072-07
A Harmonic change is recorded each time that the harmonic content crosses a “dead band”
value for a user specified period of time. The data is logged for each of the individual phases
independently.

Individual Points
By hovering the cursor over individual points on the chart the X and Y values for that point
are displayed as shown below.

Figure 17: Harmonics Individual Points

In addition the point selected will be displayed and highlighted in green on the list of triggered
events.

6.1 List of Triggered Events

The list of triggered events includes the following:

Triggered Harmonics
Triggered Harmonic is the number of the harmonic (1-15) which caused the capturing of the
event i.e. its value crossed a “dead band” value for a specified period of time. The sign and
the colour indicate whether the distortion increased or decreased for the event.

Triggered Harmonic %
This percentage indicates the distortion on the harmonic that triggered the event to be
captured.

22
NOJA-7072-07
Maximum Harmonic %
Maximum registered distortion among all harmonics at the time of the triggered event.

Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) %

THD is the measurement of the harmonic distortion present and is the ratio between the
fundamental voltage wave and all the voltage harmonics.

Total Demand Distortion (TDD) %

TDD is the current distortion against the peak current demand.

Base Frequency
Fundamental Frequency.

A column filter is available for the list of triggered events. The filter icon is displayed by
hovering the cursor over the column header or by increasing the width of the particular
column as shown below. A navigation menu is also available (refer to Navigation Features
for lists).

Figure 18: Column Filter

23
NOJA-7072-07
When a point is selected on the chart the corresponding event in the list will be highlighted in
green.

6.2 Chart Filters

A user has access to a number of filters that can be applied to the chart.

Period
The user can select the period for which the data is to be displayed on the chart including:
All, Last month or Last week. Alternatively the user can define a period using from and to
dates.

Distortion
The distortions filter is used to display records on the chart where the maximum distortion,
triggered harmonic distortion or THD/TDD Distortion is higher or lower than a certain value.

Channels
A user can select the voltage and current channels to be displayed on the chart.

Harmonics
A user can select to display harmonics data for all harmonics or for selected harmonics
and/or THD/TDD as shown below.

swells data file. Sags & Swells data will be displayed as shown below.

Figure 21: Sags and Swells Data

The Sags & Swells window displays:

 a chart showing the variance (%) and the duration for each sag/swell
It can also display the variance (%) and the start time of each sag/swell by clicking on the
Timeline tab button. Swells have a positive variance and sags have a negative variance.

 a list of registered sags & swells

For each event in the list, the following fields are displayed: Start time, Duration, Duration
Category (based on time intervals), Peak Time, Variance, Voltages for a, b, c, r, s, t and the
nominal voltage.

User has access to a column filter and a navigation menu (see section on harmonics data).

temporary.

26
NOJA-7072-07
Variance/Duration Chart
The Variance/Duration chart displays acceptable boundaries for the variances by having an
orange line for swells and a green line for sags. The area between these two lines indicates
the acceptable region. The region becomes smaller as the duration increases. For example,
for a variation with a duration of 1ms the acceptable variance for a swell can be up to 100%,
but for a duration of 10s the acceptable variance for a swell can only be up to 10%.

Individual Points
By hovering the cursor over individual points on the chart the values for that X and Y values
for that point are displayed as shown below.

27
NOJA-7072-07
Sags
A voltage Sag occurs when one or more of the 3 phase voltages fall below the Sag Normal
Threshold voltage. The Sag ends when all of the 3 phase voltages are equal to or greater
than the Sag Normal Threshold voltage plus a 2% hysteresis voltage.
Swells
A voltage Swell begins when one of more of the 3 phase voltages is above the Swell Normal
Threshold voltage and ends when all of the 3 phase voltages are equal to or less than the
Swell Normal Threshold voltage minus a 2% hysteresis voltage.

Sags & Swells can be defined as:

 Instantaneous: < 0.5 sec

 Momentary: > 0.5 sec and < 3 sec

 Temporary: > 3 sec and < 1 min.
