CHIEF ENGINEER’S STANDING ORDERS

1. Ensure all running machinery is inspected every half-hour. Temperatures,

pressures, flow rates & oil levels need careful monitoring.
2. Ensure all standby machinery is in a state of readiness. Check with the Bridge
before commencing any routine maintenance or repairs that would disable
any machinery.
3. Inform the Bridge immediately a malfunction occurs that in any way reduces
the efficiency of the vessel or it's ability to maneuver safely.
4. A close inspection of all bilge levels is regularly required to give early
warning of any possible leaks.
5. With single man engine room watches it is essential that you communicate with
the Bridge at intervals of not greater than one hour.
6. Cleanliness is your best safeguard to healthy and safe working conditions. On no
account can the presence of oil spills, oil leaks or accumulation of any
flammable rubbish (i.e. oily rags in gash cans) be tolerated beyond a
reasonable period of time.
7. Engine room plates and tank tops should be clean at the end of each period
of watch keeping.
8. Before taking over the watch you must satisfy yourself that the machinery is in a
fit condition for operation and for the safe continuation of the voyage.
9. It is your duty to ensure that your relief is physically fit to take over the watch. If
you suspect otherwise you should not hand over the watch. If in any doubt you
must seek a second opinion from either the Chief Engineer or Master.
10.The Chief Engineer is to be informed immediately upon detection of any defects
or hazards that could affect the safety of the vessel.
11.Your primary responsibility at all times is the safe and efficient operation and
maintenance of machinery affecting the safety of the vessel.
12. Remember you are your own safety officer at all times.
13 The logbook is to be completed at the end of each watch. This is an official
document. Please keep clean and ensure all entries are precise and legible.
Mistakes are to be struck through with a single line and initialed.
14. None of the above are meant in any way to supersede or override Merchant
Shipping acts or Company instructions as contained in the Fleet Operations
and Policy manuals.

of any nature.
