Cardiovascular Risk Factors – Definitions

Hypertension
Presence of resting blood pressure greater than 140 mmHg systolic or 90 mmHg diastolic on at least 2
occasions or current anti-hypertensive pharmacological treatment.

Smoking status
Indicate if the patient has a history confirming any form of tobacco use in the past. This includes cigarettes,
cigar and/or pipe.
Current = patient regularly smokes a tobacco product / products one or more times per day or has smoked in
the 30 days prior to this admission.
Former = patient has stopped smoking tobacco products more than 30 days before this admission.

Diabetes Mellitus
HbA1C _6.5%
OR
Fasting Plasma Glucose _126 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/l). Fasting is defined as no caloric intake for at least 8 h.*
OR
2-h plasma glucose _200 mg/dl (11.1mmol/l) during an OGTT
OR
In a patient with classic symptoms of hyperglycaemia or hyperglycaemic crisis, a random plasma glucose
_200 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l)
OR
Treatment with oral hypoglycaemic agent and/or insulin
*In the absence of unequivocal hyperglycaemia, result should be confirmed by repeat testing.

Hypercholesterolemia
- Fasting total cholesterol > 240 mg/dl (>6,2 mmol/l)
OR
- LDL-cholesterol > 160 mg/dl (>4.1 mmol/l)

Treatment with any lipid-lowering drug, without other underlying conditions that increase cholesterol, such
as hypothyroidism or pregnancy.
