FLEXO SOLVENT-BASED SCRATCH-OFF COATINGS

Our solvent based Scratch-off coatings are designed to be used on Heatset presses in so-called flexo
process with higher viscosity on Flexo coater or gluing unit adjusting the nip between two rollers to
control the thickness printed.

They are used either direct onto very high coated paper or ideally on Release Coatings.
Since there are inherent variables in manufacturing conditions which can affect the characteristic
performance of Scratch-off coatings, we suggest that you follow the recommendations as stated below in
an effort to minimize these adverse factors and achieve the best possible results.

I - Products references :

 Scratch off 7754 - Gold

 Scratch off 7757 - Silver
 Scratch off 7797 - Silver (for higher hiding power, to be printed only on Release coating)
 Scratch off 7758 - Black

II - Paper - Substrate
The Scratch-off coating will tend to imbed itself in the uneven, porous paper surface and resist easy
scratch off.

Usually, most coated stocks are therefore recommended since the coating presents a surface to which the
Scratch-off usually does not bond. However, some clay filled-coated stocks can cause problems. Offset or
high bulk stocks can be used only if a proper barrier varnish is applied under the Scratch-off coating.
We recommend Radior WB or UV Release coatings for a better compatibility.

Paper stocks can be submitted to our laboratory for evaluation for suitability before production/
commercial work.

The message, which the Scratch-off is to hide, should be printed with a 30% to 60% screen (30 % to
40 % is best). Whenever possible, the message should be printed in a lighter color similar to that of the
Scratch-off over coat.

III - Viscosity
As supplied, all liquid Scratch-off products settle. It is imperative that the container of liquid Scratch-off
coating is properly mixed before use to rehomogenize the liquid part together with the soft settled cake.

Settling is expected because metallic pigments and fillers are of high specific gravity and tend to settle
down ; transport and storage increase this tendency.

Without thorough agitation there is a risk to clog the pumping system and/or achieve poor performances
(low opacity or conversely smearing by printing a pigment paste)

During production, container should be covered to minimize solvent loss in evaporation.

Solvent based Scratch-off formulas are made with certain naphtha solvents which have been selected to
balance pad swelling and resin solvency.
Only the Reducer 635 F should be used to dilute or maintain Scratch-off viscosity.
Over reduction leads to loss opacity and can increase the tendency for the coating to stain the substrate.

These Scratch-offs are high viscosity suitable for the printing process.
Viscosity is measured with a Byk 6 cup @ 25°C with a specification range of 35 - 45 seconds. Viscosity
should be controlled and maintain hourly.

IV - Application pads
Buna-N rubber (well cured nitrile rubber) works best as the application pads. it resists swelling the best
when exposed to naphtas and other similar solvents. Our Scratch-offs are made with naphtas which swell
Buna-N the least.

ASAI APR F48 is a liquid polymer resin plate which is working fine as well.

Suitable pads can be purchased only from few flexographic printing plate suppliers.
Rubber hardness is best at 30 - 50 Shores A.

All pads should be ground to exactly the same height or thickness and it is better to have sticky pad on an
area larger than the pad impression area.

V - Applications devices
The pattern gluer should be adjusted so that the application pad just "kisses" the roller from which the
Scratch-off is applied. This "kiss" is also required when the applicator pad contacts the web. Pressure
greater than a "kiss" can cause a ridge or bead at the edge of the Scratch-off pattern. Ridges or "halo"
effect could cause offsetting, smearing upon die cutting or excessive staining. This can also cause shear,
resulting in slinging and thickening of the product and therefore improper application.

VI - Recommended film thickness

Normally, the message is hidden when the Scratch-off coating is applied at approximately 12 - 15 µm dry
film thickness i.e. 35 - 40 g/m2 wet.

If the coat weight is much lower than this, there is the danger of getting unacceptable scratch off
properties, including not hiding the message or not being able to scratch off.
Conversely, if coat weight is higher, offsetting, blocking, smearing and excessive staining could occur.

VII - Drying
The temperature of the web should not exceed 120°C (250°F) and the dwell time in the oven should not
be longer than 2-3 seconds.

There are two processes that should be avoided for drying metallic Scratch-off coatings :

 RF - Radio Frequency (excessive heat generated by the reaction with metallic pigments may
ignite the substrate and create a fire hazard)
 UV curing lamps (reaction with the resin system for premature polymerization which results
in poor release properties)

Prior tests are recommended before undertaking any commercial work
