The final integrative work consists of the literary analysis of the short novel “The great Gatsby”.

REMEMBER that you will have the final integrative work in the examination stage on the 30th April.

This exam will be an oral presentation of the analysis of the novel.

You have to prepare a power point presentation or a concept map to show your work. It must
include just headings or words as a guide of your presentation, you can include images from the
book, the characters or the roaring twenties you consider interesting or outstanding, text or
other information IS NOT ALLOWED.

The following are some elements to must include in your presentation:

 Description of the characters. (COMPULSORY)


 Brief plot of the story. (COMPULSORY)
 Background, historical context about the roaring twenties. Speak about the main
events from the roaring twenties reflected in the novel (American dream, social
behavior, an era of mass consumerism, the importance of being socially accepted,
being rich and famous, as Jazz-Age, flappers, Prohibition laws and the Harlem
Renaissance, redefined arts and culture). (COMPULSORY)
 You must select at least four of the main to develop. (COMPULSORY)
 Speak about the author of the novel (biography). (COMPULSORY)

The following are some considerations to take into account for your presentation:

 What do we learn about Nick Carraway in the introductory section of the novel?
 Why is the city called East Egg and West Egg?
 Describe the Valley of ashes What does it look like? What do you think it represents?
 How are Daisy, Tom and Jordan described? (physically and their personality)
 We do not meet Gatsby until Chapter 3, we just hear references to him in the
conversations of others. What impressions do you get? How do you imagine Gatsby is
reading those references?

 The introductory section of Chapter 4 gives a long roster of those who attended
Gatsby’s parties. How do they behave toward their host? Why, then, do they accept
his hospitality?
 Describe how are the parties and people who attend to them presented by the author.
This description is an example of what (referring to the historical context)
 How does Myrtle’s speech reveal her character? How does her behavior can be related
to the historical context of the story?
 Describe George Wilson. Is he satisfied with his life? Has he achieved the American
Dream? Give an example of this fact.
 Pay attention to the description of Gatsby’s car. Can you relate it to the historical
context you have read? How?
 How does Gatsby feel about Daisy?
 Describe Daisy’s reaction about her daughter, how can you relate it to the place
women had before the 20’s?
 In what way was Dan Cody involved in Gatsby’s destiny?
 What is the importance of the cars, especially Gatsby’s car?
 In what way is each of the major characters involved in the tragedy that occurs at the
end of chapter 7?
 At the end of Chapter 7 Nick observes Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy after the accident. What
conclusions does he reach?
 Explain the last paragraph of Chapter 7.
 What makes Nick assume responsibility for the funeral arrangements? Specify the
things he did.
 What is the irony of Gatsby’s funeral?
 Explain the significance of the last page of the novel in relation to Gatsby’s dream and
to the American Dream.
 Name some examples from the novel you can relate to the events shown in the
roaring twenties. Explain why are they examples of those events.

 You don’t have to answer all the questions; you can


use them as a guide to create your speech.
 Your speech must be from 5’ to 10’ (five to ten
minutes) long.
 You can draw a concept map or a power point
presentation with headings note to help you to
develop your speech.

speaking.
 You will not be allowed to read notes of the speech.
