Re: Terry Fox Excursion Day

Dear Parent, Guardians, Caregivers,

On September 22th, 2023 – Lincoln M. Alexander will be participating in our annual Terry Fox Excursion.
Please see the attached for further information as you may see many of our Lincoln students in our
community.
Purpose
The purpose of participating in the Terry Fox Day is to inform Canadians of the importance of finding a cure for
cancer. Terry’s Marathon of Hope allows this journey to continue and with over 60 countries participating, over
850million dollars have been raised since the Marathon of Hope began. We continue to strive to find a cure for
cancer which has impacted many millions of individuals and their families.

Why
At the age of 18 years old, Terry Fox was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma also
known as bone cancer. The experience of living with cancer ignited a fire in Terry
to raise awareness and help bring an end to the suffering cancer causes.

On April 12, 1980 – in St. Johns Newfoundland – Terry started what is now an
international event attempted to run with an artificial leg 7,500km across Canada
to raise awareness in the battle for Cancer. Terry wanted to change the world!

What Was The Marathon of Hope

Terry set out on an ambitious plan. In order to raise money for cancer research,
Terry set out to run 42km each day starting in St. Johns Newfoundland. His plan
was to run every day - allowing him to cover all of Canada from coast to coast. His
journey was to be completed in Victoria, British Columbia in less than 200 days.
from when he first started in April 12, 1980.

What Happened:
Nothing was supposed to stop Terry. Terry was a fierce competitor and wanted to finish his journey that he started
on April 12, 1980. But on September 1st, 1980, Terry could not continue running any longer. After 5,373km later, a
journey that started in St. Johns Newfoundland, Terry was transported to hospital. Unfortunately, his run abruptly
came to an end. It was revealed that the cancer he thought he was overcoming, had spread to his lungs. After a
courageous 9 months, Terry passed away on June 28th, 1981.

What Do We Do Today?

“Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue.

It’s got to keep going” – Terry Fox.

Every year in September, over 60 countries participating, 9,500 events, 4,000,000+ supporters and 850millions in
donations raised since its inception, we continue to honor Terry’s legacy in participating and raising awareness to
help fight the battle against cancer.
