perPETual – Dedicated to sustainable polyester filament yarn

• About us: perPETual is the majority owner of Polygenta

Technologies Limited, a Bombay Stock Exchange listed company.
Polygenta is the only manufacturer in the Indian sub-continent of
high quality, sustainable polyester filament yarn.

• Our ReNEW Process: Polygenta has licensed perPETual’s

proprietary chemical recycling technology, to transform 100%
post-consumer-waste PET bottles into high quality polymer/ yarn
which is comparable to yarn made from virgin petrochemicals.

• Our Management: Strong management team with deep Standards and Awards
experience in polyester, recycling, and the petrochemical industry
underpins our breakthrough technology. Polygenta has ~300
employees for its operations (integrated thru to texturised yarn).

• Our Products : Polygenta makes and sells a wide range of yarns

ranging from 50-1200 denier for various applications to a broad
portfolio of global brands.

Our Investors ISO 9000, 14000, 18000

What We Do… Offering a Robust Solution to the Problem

Problem Our Solution = ReNEW Process

• We break down PET bottles chemically into

• Enough plastic is thrown away each year to
polymer building blocks (esters) to make high
circle the earth four times
quality polyester filament yarn in a cost efficient
• 17 mn tons of bottles are generated yearly and sustainable manner.
with over half ending up in landfill or
• We have the ability to process various qualities of
incineration
waste-PET bottles and access feedstock
• It takes hundreds of years for plastic to considered “harder-to-treat” (e.g. higher
degrade. tolerance for impurities such as glues, dyes,
• Countless marine life and birds are killed flavour molecules, dyes, etc.
annually from plastic in our oceans. • Relative to other chemical recycling, ReNEW
consumes less energy
• Offers seamless integration with existing
polyester plants
• Commercially viable at a smaller scales.

Polyester’s “reversible chemistry” is the basis for ReNEW’s (and other) Chemical
Recycling Processes
Reaction Chemical Nomenclature Explanation
Esters:- • PTA (an acid) and MEG (an alcohol) are the
PTA + MEG = Esters + Water primary polyester feedstocks (from crude oil)
• MEG also used to “break-down” polyester in
ReNEW’s chemical recycling
• Ester is polyester’s building block (repeat units
‘n’=2)
• Making ester from PTA+MEG is highly energy
intensive.
Poly-ester:- • Individual esters are “condensed” into long chain
Esters – MEG = Polyester molecules called “poly-ester” by the ‘removal’ of
(Polycondensation) MEG (hence ‘poly-condensation’ )
• MEG removal controlled to yield desired ester
R60 R80 R100 R300 chain length (with critical performance
Films Yarns Bottles Tyre Cord
properties)
• Applications vary with the number of repeat
units: e.g. (R 60 = Films, R80 = Yarns, R 100 = Pet
Bottles, R300 = Polyester tyre cord)
Breaking down polyester • By “adding back” MEG, long chain polyesters can
(chemically) be broken down again (depolymerised) into prior
components, i.e.:
• Polyester + MEG = Ester o Smaller Ester molecules
(Glycolysis) o “back to PTA and MEG”
• Different chemistries exist to break down
• Ester + Water = PTA + Polyester:
MEG o Glycolysis (ReNEW is proprietary Glycolysis)
(Hydrolysis) o Hydrolysis
o Methanolysis

Why choose RENEW Chemical Recycling?

• Polyester performance depends on Key Parameters including:

Mechanical Dye Elasticity Product Colour
Strength Uniformity
• Our ReNEW process matches the conventional polyester manufacturing process conditions

Key Process Control Importance of these Conditions in Conventional ReNEW Chemical Recycling (how it seeks to match
Conditions Polyester Manufacturing conventional processing capabilities)

Process Temperature Elevated thermal exposure (temperature and/or time) Temperature < 220 deg C
can impair product colour; cause side-reactions;
branching.

Contamination Contamination is less of an issue for conventional ReNEW has multiple, redundant decontamination aspects
minimised/ avoided polyester’s high purity feedstocks from crude oil (sufficient to meet US FDA standards for food contact):
refineries (PTA+MEG) but must be ensured • filtration Hot EG Wash;
• absorption;
• adsorption/ leaf depth filtration
Spinning speeds and • Spinning speed: 3,000 m/min needed for optimal • Spinning speed: enables 3,000 m/min needed for optimal
texturizing conditions pre-orientation for apparel grade products pre-orientation for apparel grade products

Uniform Variability in polymers can impinge on strength and can Molecular weight broken down to 2 to 3, followed by
polymerisation hamper consistency dye uptake homogenisation at low viscosity ; So PET bottles for different
end uses with widely variable molecular weights do not
matter (not straightforward for mechanical recycling)
By products (like Generated during the process, DEG more inclined to be generated during recycling; ReNEW
DEG) mitigates with specific process phases to control DEG to
acceptable levels and create favourable impact in dye uptake

• ReNEW’s robust recycling and decontamination capabilities makes it an excellent foundation for developing
further recycling solutions for various PET wastes, particularly those with more challenging contamination
profiles
• Many of these more contaminated PET waste streams are lower cost. Subject to successful ongoing investment
in process improvements, these offer an opportunity to both expand the recyclate streams and lower the cost
of recycling over time – without compromising quality or consistency of the finished product.
• An outcome that is worthy of investment: by Polygenta (perPETual); its Customers; and Consumers…
