PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL McFARLAND COOK, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN
‘Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119
‘Zo alt whom it may concern:
‘Beitknown that, DaNer McFaRt AND CooK,
of Mansfeld, in the county of Richland and State
of Ohio, have inventedan Electro Magnetic Bat
tery, of which the following is « specification
“My invention relates to the combination of wo
or more simple or compound helices and iron
‘cores or magnets in such a manner asto produce
‘a constant electric current without the aid of «
sgalvanie batter
‘Figure 1 ropresents the different parts of
compound helix and iron core. Fig. 2 is a per-
spective view of my invention,
Tn carzying out my invention I do not contine |
ryself to any particnlar mode of eonstraeting a
helix or helices, or to any particular sizeof wite,
observing only that the quantity of wire in the
several helices is snficient to produce the result,
uusing less or more wire in the helices to suit the
purpose for whieh they aro designed; also usi
Such material for insulating the helices 2s will
Secure a proper action. I prefer, however, in
common, to tse the same size of wire in the con
struction of either simple or compound helices.
Tn the use of the simple heligos for convenience
and to favor the insulation in the resistance to
obtain a sufficient tension and quantity of eurrent
for action, it is desirable to use a long iron core,
‘A, Fig. 1, say tivo, three, or even six feet in
iength, and two, three, or more inches in diam:
eter; also a lunge copper wire of good conduct
ive quality, the wire being well insulated with
silk, shella¢, ox paraftine only, the latter being ob-
jectionable ‘as it is liable tb be melted by the
hheating of the helix while in action. ‘Tho iron
core A may be a solid bar or a bundle of iron
‘wire, the latter giving higher tension to the eur
Tent with equal length and fineness of wire, In
any event the wire may be fine or coarse; but I
prefer to use No. 16,or even heavier wire, as the
result is powerfal in proportion to the size and
Tength of the wire. ln the use of the compound
Laelicesitis preferable, in some eases, to ase asmall
wite, say No. 30, oreven less, fora primary helix,
and No. 16, or even larger, for a secondary helix.
‘By this combination the initial secondary eurrent
of the primary helix being very sinall in qu
tity in comparison to the terminal soeondaxy ¢
rent of the secondary helix offers but litile re-
sistance to theterminal secondary, hence a quick
eraction is secured; or the primary helix may be

made of uninsulated wire coiled into a solid helix,
Deing insulated only between the coils,in which
case there is but little or no opposing initial
secondary cmvent. Holices alone with large
quantities of wire will produce similar resalis.
A xibbon spiral may be substituted for the se
‘ondary helix, say of three, six, twelve, or tiwenty-
fouritichesin width and of any eonvenientlengt,
| butalways of suflicient length to raisethe tension
of its terminal eurrent to a degree necessary to
reproduce itself by its aetion on the priniar
helix. Inthe useo! compound helicesitisimport-
ant that the secondary coil should be wound on
in the same direction as the primary coil, and
that the secondary poles or wires should be con.
nected to the opposite poles of the primary coil
B. The action will then be asfollows: ‘Theter-
minal secondary enrrent of the secondary helix:
€ will eizeulate through the opposite primary coil
B, while at the same instant a terminal second:
iy cusrent from the primary helix B will be de-
‘veloped and cireulate through the opposite
ondary helix, both eurvents flowing in the same
direetion in. the opposite helices BC, and pro-
duce a combined magnetic action upon the iron
bar A in the center; the opposing initial second.
ary currents of the two helices B C being over
powered do not manifest themselves in the main
cirenit D of the battery, there being eight dis.
ents developed in the aetion of one e
Ww paits of helices, two ter:
ry currents to en
pair of helices, the four initial secondaries con:
stantly opposing the cireulation of the four ter
minal secondary enrrents; but the initial second.
vies being of inch lower tension and less
quantity than the terminal secondary are con:
sumed ortaken upby theterminal, leaving a sui
jent suxplus terminal to overcone the resistance
of the primary wire and charge the bar A toa de-
| gree necessaty to reproduce itself in an oppo-
Site secondary coil, By this means a constant
current is kept up in the several helices. ‘These
oils may be composed of from five hundred to
one thousand feet or more primary eoil, and less
or more secondary coil; in any event the more
oil and the better the insulation the more pow-
erful the result. In the use of simple heliges, or
two coils only, any size of wire may beused, only:
so that th
of the w
insulation isefteetnal and the quantity
‘Phe longer and larger
8 is sufficient119,825,
the wire or coil the more powerful the result, one
thousand or more feet being preferable. “The
poles of the two helices being connected the ae
tion is the same as in the compound helices, there
being but four currents developed, two initial
and two terminal currents, the latter lowing con
stantly in thesame direction—ineffect there being
but one cnrrent in the same direction.
‘The mode of prodneing or starting theaction in
the helices consists in the use of 2 steel or electro.
magnet, or helix, around one of the helives, and
cansing a secondary emrent in the inelosed helix
by means of buttery cazvent in the outer one;
the action then in eithier the simple or compound
helices increases in quantity to the maximum ca-
pacity of the wires fo conduct with the existing
tension of the current. Tf, now, the cirenit is
broken the current instantly’eeases, and ean only
be restored by the same means that it was first
produced; hence to allow the use of the main eir
cuit for common purposes I introduce a rheostat,
nice of any kind into the eireuit, so
that a small portion of the current only will low
aloug the resistanee, by whieh means the ation
in the helicesis feebly maintained when the main
cireuit is broken, aud instantly restored when it
is closed to its full force. By'this means the ac
tion becomes in effect the same as the common
‘battery currents, and may be used for similar
purposes. For the purpose of preventing theheat
ing of the helices caused by the intensity of the
action, and to prevent cireulation of the initial
secondary currents in the main cireuit, a rheostat
of any convenient form may be made to consti
tute a part of themain cireuit D. The alternate
changes of the iron cores or magnets may he nsed
for producing electro-magnetic motion, or motion
to a wheel of any suitable devie«
Having described my invention, what I claim
as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
‘The combination of two or more simple orcom
pound helices, in the manner and forthe purpose
‘set forth.
