1.0 Purpose
To acquaint user with Section 7 and it’s intended usage.
2.0 Scope
Applies to field and office personal.
3.0 Definitions
Velocity: distance per unit of time; usually meter/minute or second
Elongation: increase in length due to temperature or “pull”
BHT: bottom hole temperature
WHT: wellhead temperature
Freeboard: distance between the last row of tubing & the outer perimeter of the reel
4.0 Procedure
Work through a sample of examples that relate to calculations required for fieldwork.
A calculator, pen or pencil and work sheet is required.
This material will be used in conjunction with course material for training purposes.
1. Pumping down 50.8mm tubing inside of 88.8mm, 13.84 kg/m tubing at .5m3/min, what’s
the annular velocity?
The second will calculate how much the coil tubing length will “expand or grow”
based on BHT vs. WHT.
2. 1200 meters of tubing in a well with a WHT of 13°C and a BHT of 37°C, what the
elongation?

Page 7-3 is used to determine how many meters of a given diameter coil tubing will fit
onto a reel of given dimensions.
Pages 7-4 through 7-13 provide friction pressure loss charts based on straight tubing
vs. reeled tubing with four types of fluid taken into account.
3. What’s the friction gradient for 50.8mm tubing with a wall thickness of 3.962mm and a
rate of .7 m3/min with 15% HCl
