3 Us-Declaration
3 Us-Declaration
The USA was not born “naturally”, as the result of a long process during which
families, clans and communities gradually coalesced into a state. It was put
together at a specific time, as a particular political project based on the thought
of reformist thinkers and above all – of John Locke. This places the USA in a very
special (and quite small) group of states, which can point to the specific dates
and events when their ancestors put together the social contract – and which
can also point to the documents that set out the social contract in writing.
In this short Section we present two originators of such documents: the
Founding Father Thomas Jefferson, the main author of the Declaration of
Independence; and President Abraham Lincoln, the man who re-formulated
the aims of the Union after the Civil War almost tore it apart.

Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826) was the principal author
of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and third President of the USA
(1801–1809). One of the greatest liberals of his time, Jefferson envisioned
America as an “Empire of Liberty” and a revival of the true republican ideal
lost with ancient Rome. Jefferson idealized the independent farmer as the
basis of republican virtues, distrusted cities and financiers, and favoured a
limited federal government.
Jefferson’s political philosophy was liberal even in the contemporary
understanding of the term. He believed that people are born not only equal,
but also good; and that dependencies make them treat each other badly and
create political and social problems. Under this logic, in a republic it is the
monopolistic financial institutions that create inequality and dependency,
while in a monarchy, the whole social and political structure is wicked, being
explicitly based on inequality and dependency.
