ABSTRACT

The finite element method (FEM) is currently the

dominant analytical tool available to the engineer. The

method is applicable to many fields of engineering including

structural analysis, heat transfer, fluid flow, mass

transport, and electromagnetic potential. This project

involves the use of the FEM in the solution of problems

dealing with the analysis of thin, continuous plates in

bending. Problems of this type are relatively common in

structural engineering practice. The theory is based on the

discretization of a continuous thin plate into a network of

rectangular segments, called finite elements. Plate bending

analysis involves the determination of bending moments at

element nodal points within th2 continuum. The results of

finite element analysis has compared favorably with

classical methods of analysis.

The techniques of finite element analysis and the

computer programs herein have been developed in FORTRAN,

BASIC, PASCAL, and C software languages using rectangular

plate bending elements.
