MEDICAL INTERPRETING (1) - WEEK 8

Contexto: After the pandemic, Stan came to Spain along with her wife and their
son Mike since he found a good job as an English teacher in a high school. They’ve
been here for less than a couple of weeks, so they are still learning about how
Spain works and getting used to their new city. Their son caught a cold and has
been sick for a pair of days, but it’s gotten worse as days passed. Stan took Mike to
the doctor during a rainy Saturday morning in order to see what’s going on with his
son.

*Dr. Franquelo hears a knock on the door*

Franquelo: Adelante, pase.

*Stan goes inside the doctor’s office with her son*

Stan: Good morning, doctor. Sorry for not arriving on time to our medical
appointment, traffic is crazy out there and the rain doesn’t make things any easier.
Dr. Franquelo: No se disculpe, aún puedo atenderlos antes de que llegue mi próximo
paciente. Dígame, ¿en qué puedo ayudarle?
Stan: You see, my family and I arrived here a couple of weeks ago from the United
States. Our son Mike caught a cold last Monday that didn’t seem too serious at the
beginning, so we thought that with some rest and a proper diet, he’d recover in no
time. But his cold has gotten worse recently.
Dr. Franquelo: Ya veo. ¿Qué te notas, hijo? Tos, mocos, fatiga...
Mike: Well, I feel my throat sore due to the ongoing coughing spells. I haven’t
vomited too much since I started with the cold, and I’ve had a runny nose since
Thursday, I think.
Dr. Franquelo: ¿Has notado cansancio o dificultades al respirar? ¿Fiebre, tal vez?
Mike: Yes, I have been feeling exhausted since I started with the cold, and it’s hard
for me to breath while sleeping. I think my highest temperature was around 37
degrees.
Dr. Franquelo: Conque 37 grados. ¿Se ha asegurado usted de que su hijo no tenga
Coronavirus? Tengo entendido que en algunos estados de América sigue siendo
obligatorio el uso de las mascarillas.
Stan: No, we’re from Texas, and the use of mask stopped being mandatory a few
months ago there. Besides, we’ve made sure that he did the antigen test twice, and
the results given in both tests were negative.
Dr. Franquelo: De acuerdo. Hijo, levántate la camiseta para que pueda escucharte el
pecho. Respira profundamente y expira. Repítelo hasta que te diga que puedes parar.

*The doctor started examining the kid’s chest with the stethoscope*

Dr. Franquelo: Muy bien. Por lo que he podido oír y por lo que me ha comentado,
parece que su hijo tiene bronquitis aguda. Parece que ha habido un rebrote en
adolescentes recientemente con el cambio brusco de temperatura y la humedad. Ya
le he diagnosticado bronquitis a unos cuantos a lo largo de la semana.
Stan: Dear lord...
Dr. Franquelo: Tranquilo, no es algo de lo que deba preocuparse. La bronquitis es
algo muy común sobre todo en esta época y que va mejorando con el paso del
tiempo. No es algo que le vaya a durar más de tres semanas. Le puedo recetar
medicamentos para aliviar la tos, pero no podemos recetarle ningún antibiótico.
Stan: Well, so what can we do?
Dr. Franquelo: Lo que le puedo recomendar a su hijo es que procure descansar y
beber tanta agua como pueda para evitar la deshidratación. La miel o ciertas
pastillas para la tos aliviarán el dolor de garganta, y para la mucosidad le puedo
recomendar suero fisiológico o que inhale vapor de un recipiente con agua caliente o
de la ducha cada noche. Ah, y que no se olvide de lavarse las manos después de
toser para evitar transmitir el virus.
Stan: We have always maintained a healthy diet. I suppose that there’s not any
problem with that, right?
Dr. Franquelo: No, en absoluto. Puede seguir comiendo frutas, legumbres o pescado
incluso, le sentarán bien. Pero evite sobre todo el consumo de comida basura y de
bebidas frías por un tiempo. Que cene algo ligero por las noches, como un vaso de
sopa con fideos, le ayudará a conciliar el sueño y para reducir la inflamación de
garganta.
Stan: Alright, and where can we ask for this cough drops or physiological serum?
We’re still getting used to the place and there isn’t any drugstore in our
neighborhood. Is there any drugstore nearby?
Dr. Franquelo: A la vuelta de la esquina tiene una farmacia en la que les atenderán
sin problema alguno.
Stan: Perfect. Is there anything else you can suggest for me and my wife, doctor?
Dr. Franquelo: Bueno, si su mujer y usted son propensos a contagiarse, les
recomiendo el uso de mascarillas en casa por si acaso.
Stan: Alright. Thanks for everything.
Dr. Franquelo: Un placer. Si en un par de semanas ven que su hijo sigue así y no
mejora, no duden en pasarse por aquí.
Stan: Will do. Thanks for everything. Bye.
Dr. Franquelo: De nada, que pasen un buen día.
