Quality Standard 3: Teachers plan and deliver effective instruction and create an environment

that facilitates learning for their students.

● Element A: Teachers demonstrate knowledge about the ways in which learning takes
place, including the levels of intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of
their students.
Reflection:

This artifact illustrates two sections from my lesson plan on a subtraction activity in my first
grade practicum classroom. Prior to teaching the lesson, I ensured that I understood the profile of
my students, as well as the differentiation I could provide within the various elements of
development and classroom practices. These differentiated classroom practices included the
content, ELL, process, product, environment, and SEL as each of them were considered through
a modification and an extension lens. The examples of modifications helped me to support
students that were struggling with the topic or organization, while the extensions helped me to
scaffold some of the student’s learning.

This lesson plan shows that I made an extensive plan to deliver the instruction smoothly and
clearly to the students, to ensure that their learning and understanding could be supported. Since
the reasoning and purpose behind the lesson was noted, the classroom environment strongly
facilitated the learning within the classroom. Additionally, the student profile and topic relevance
shows my knowledge of how learning takes place, as I understand the ways in which the students
in my classroom learn. Finally, the modifications and extensions illustrate the levels of
intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development.
