Q. 1 Establish the CFL criteria for stability of explicit time marching of 1-D and 2-D (10)
diffusion equations. Obtain the discretized equations for explicit time marching
of diffusion of heat in a one dimensional domain with end temperatures of T
(x=0, t)=1 and T(x=1,t)=0 respectively. Take five uniform cells in the domain of
length unity. For initial distribution of temperature in the domain as T(x,0)=1-x2,
calculate the temperature at the grid centers after a time steps of 0.01 sec. Take
the thermal conductivity of the domain as ∞=1.0-0.5x.
Q.2 Write short notes on any two: (i) TDMA (ii) GS-SOR (iii) ADI (10)

Q. 3 In a 2-D channel shown below, the fluid enters from left with a temperature (10)
of 200C and the plate temperatures are maintained at 400C. Hydro-
dynamically developed velocity distribution is parabolic with a maximum
value of 1.5 m/s. The thermally developing domain is of size 4cm10cm
shown with grids. At the exit of this domain the flow is thermally
developed. Write the energy equation to obtain the steady state temperature
distribution in the channel. Using Finite volume philosophy, obtain the
discretized algebraic equations at nodal points 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Use FOU
scheme for convection. Take thermal diffusivity of the fluid as 0.003 m2/s.

Q. 4 Write the governing equations for buoyancy driven incompressible flow inside a (10)
cavity. Using thermal diffusivity and length of the side of the cavity, obtain the
non-dimensional form of the equations. Reduce the Navier-Stokes equation in
the form of stream-function vorticity equations. Express the boundary and initial
conditions in the form of stream-function and vorticity. Discretize the equations
and develop a suitable algorithm to obtain the flow and thermal field in the
cavity.
Q.5 For the domain shown below, estimate the predicted values of velocity at face (10)
centers and the mass source based on continuity equation for the finite
volume with centroid at Q using semi-explicit primitive variables formulation
for solution of Navier-Stokes equation on a staggered grid. Consider time
marching from time t=0 to t=0.02. Pressure at cell centers at time t=0 in the
domain are shown in figure. Velocity field at t=0 is expressed as:
. Also express the discrete algebraic equation for
pressure correction for the same finite volume. Take density and viscosity to
be unity.
