ASTHMA

Introduction

Asthma, also called bronchial asthma, is a chronic lung disease that can cause breathing
problems throughout someone’s lifetime(long-term) . When you have asthma, the air passages in
the lungs become narrow due to inflammation and tightening of the muscles around the small
airways. When you have asthma your lungs react to things that may not bother other people.
Asthma triggers vary from person to person. Some people react to only a few while others react
to many. If you have asthma, it is important to keep track of the causes or triggers that you know
provoke your asthma. The symptoms do not always occur right after exposure. Delayed asthma
episodes may occur depending on the type of trigger and how sensitive a person is to it. Asthma
is a major non-communicable disease (NCD) affecting children and adults and is the most
common chronic disease among children. Common asthma symptoms include Coughing,
especially at night, Wheezing, Shortness of breath Chest tightness, and pain. Early warning signs
of asthma. the difference between asthma and allergies. Asthma is one of the most common
chronic inflammatory disorders. Its prevalence varies worldwide between 5% and more than
20%. It isn’t clear why some people get asthma and others don’t, but it’s probably due to a
combination of environmental and genetic factors. Asthma affects all ages: it is the most
common chronic disease of childhood, adolescence and adulthood and has large effects on
school and work performance of patients. Asthma is a serious challenge to public health.

Objective:
General objective:
After the case presentation we will be able to gain our knowledge regarding/about asthma,
enhance our skills in providing care to the patient and demonstrate the proper attitude towards
the clients and care member

Knowledge:

● Define the meaning of asthma


● Know the pathophysiological of the asthma
● Determine signs and symptoms and risk factors/causes of asthma
● Determine appropriate nursing care management for client with asthma
● Provide accurate information about the topic
Skills:
● Always practice Safe hygiene techniques when handling the patient
● Apply different assessment techniques to determine the need of patient with asthma
● Collaborate with the health team members in planning and performing client care
● Perform appropriate nursing intervention for the patient with asthma
Attitude:
● Establish rapport with patients and members of the family.
● Recognizing clients need to use a holistic approach.
● Show utmost confidence in managing patient’s bedside cares.

-fever , acute shortness of breath (SOB) and has audible wheezing.

The patient was initially diagnosed with acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma (AEBA)

She was newly diagnosed with bronchial asthma in her last admission 3 weeks ago

Family History of Illness


Both her parents have no known medical illness but she has a cousin who suffers from bronchial
asthma and is frequently admitted to the hospital.

Lifestyle
She stays near the garment factory and has a cat at home. She smokes half a pack of cigarettes
per day and an occassional alcoholic drinker. She had no travel history in the past 30 days but
had attended a dinner party last week.
