Twenty-second Sunday of Ordinary Time

Greeting of peace. We have some important dates coming up…

Friday, September 8 The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Birth of Mary. We will hold the funeral for
Fr. Salim Joseph, OFM, on this day. Viewing is from 9am to 10am. The funeral Mass is at 10:30am in the
second floor church. Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM, the Guardian of the Shrine’s Franciscan community, will preside.
Because of Fr. Salim's funeral, Confessions on Friday will be from Noon to 1pm instead of 10am to 1pm. We
give thanks to God for Fr. Salim’s good life!

Monday, September 11 As is our annual custom, we will honor those who died in the events of 9/11 by
displaying a banner with their names outside of the Shrine. The banner will be on display from Friday,
September 8, through Monday, September 11.

Saturday, September 23
As you know, Pope Francis has invited bishops from every diocese in the world into a process called a synod, to
spend time with the entire People of God reflecting upon communion, participation, and mission. Communion
means that we do this together, participation means that we listen to voices that are on the margins, and mission
means that we evangelize and look to do something outside of and bigger than ourselves.

All are invited to serve the Synod by participating in an event called Enlarge the Space of Your Tent: A Boston
Synod Gathering. This event happens on Saturday, September 23, from 2:00pm – 5:00pm, hosted at the Pastoral
Center for the Archdiocese of Boston in Braintree. One topic of conversation will be the ordination of women to
the diaconate.

Registration is required, and the registration form can be found by scanning the Q-code on the table on the
landing outside of the second floor church.

Tuesday, October 3 The Transitus Service at 7pm. This very unique annual Franciscan event solemnly
commemorates the death St. Francis of Assisi and his passing from this life to the next. The friar community at
the Shrine attends this prayer service.

Wednesday, October 4 The Feast of St. Francis. We will host a Faith in Blue event, featuring local police
agencies and their community outreach officers, outdoors on a closed-off Arch Street, at 12:30pm. Boston BPD
Commissioner Michael Cox expects to attend. The Arch St. Band will perform. Franciscan prayers and a
Blessing of the Animals will be at 12:45pm. Masses that day at 6am, 7am, and 12:05pm will celebrate the
Franciscans’ patron saint: St. Francis of Assisi.

Wednesday, November 1 All Saints Day. Holy Day of Obligation. Vigil Mass at 5:15pm on Tuesday, October
31. Masses on Wednesday at 6am, 7am, and 12:05pm.

Evening of Wednesday, November 1 Annual Fund Raising Gala at the Museum of Fine Arts. This year’s
fundraising goal for the dinner is $2.5 million. We are currently seeking individual and corporate sponsors.

Centering Prayer Sessions will Resume in October

Centering Prayer is a form of Christian contemplative prayer, to center awareness on the presence of
God. This modern movement in Christianity was initiated by three Trappist monks of St. Joseph’s Abbey
in Spencer, MA in the 1970s. Participants aim to be present to God, to “consent to God’s presence and
action during the time of prayer.”

Monthly Prayer Card
Would you like to receive this beautiful monthly prayer card asking St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi to intercede
for you? Brother John Maganzini, OFM, composes our inspirational prayer card to accompany our monthly
devotion to St. Anthony of Padua.

Brother John plans our monthly devotion program for the year. We will finish this calendar year with the theme,
“Rebuild my Church.” This was the message God gave to St. Francis of Assisi, while he was praying before the
crucifix in a dilapidated church in San Damiano, near Assisi, Italy.

Francis thought our Lord was asking him to repair the physical structure. Instead, the message was to rebuild the
whole church, God’s people who were desperately in need of renewal. Our Franciscan friars continue this 800-year
tradition by living out the Gospel every day.

Please email Ariana Green, director of stewardship at agreen@stanthonyshrine.org to be added to our mailing list.

Rethinking Women’s Participation: Animators
On Saturday, September 23rd from 2-5pm, the Archdiocese of Boston is
offering hospitality at the Pastoral Center in Braintree, MA to a Cohort of
Synodal Animators throughout the Diocese yearning to continue to serve
the Synod on Synodality.

The focus of the gathering will be surrounding the Church’s ongoing

discernment of Women’s Participation and Leadership.

The Boston Archdiocesan synod report shared “Many parishes included a

statement that the archdiocese needs more women in leadership roles”,
“they would like to see woman have a stronger voice in many levels, or
even every level of the life of the church. Some call for an increased role
for women in the liturgy.”

As we journey and discern who the Holy Spirit is calling us to be as

Church in the 21st century, and how to participate fully in our baptismal
responsibilities, we call to every corner of the Archdiocese of Boston to
lend their voices to this important event.
Our piano in the second floor church
is nearing the end of its useful life.

We are asking for a benefactor to consider donating

a piano, or selling us a piano at a reduced price.

The piano needs to be available for inspection

before we would agree to accept it.

As always, thank you for your generosity in

considering this request.

Over the next several months, we expect to be hiring people in

the following Shrine positions:
 Director of Facilities and Safety. Full-time.
 Senior Accountant. Part-time.
 Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Full-time.
 Director of Liturgy. Part-time.
 Substitute Pianist. Part-time. Grandparents Day
 Cantor. Part-time.
If you would like to learn more about these job openings,
Sunday, Sept 10
please email hr@stanthonyshrine.org. Thank you.
