There are several types of sleep studies that can help diagnose different sleep disorders:
1) An overnight polysomnography monitors various body functions during sleep like breathing, heart rate, and limb movements over 6-8 hours.
2) A multiple sleep latency test evaluates daytime sleepiness by measuring how fast a person falls asleep during nap opportunities every 2 hours.
3) A split night study diagnoses and treats sleep apnea in one night by initially diagnosing and then determining the needed CPAP pressure.

A. Diagnostic Overnight Polysomnography - This is a general monitoring of sleep and a variety of body functions during sleep, including breathing patterns, oxygen saturation, heart rhythms and limb movements. - 6-8 hours. Different types of Sleep Study B. Diagnostic Daytime Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) - It is used to diagnose narcolepsy. - In (MSLT), a person is given 4-5 opportunities to sleep every two hours during normal wake times. - The specialist uses the test to measure the extent of daytime sleepiness (how fast the patient falls asleep in each nap, aka latency), and also how quickly REM sleep begins. - A positive MSLT is obtained when the patient falls asleep with a mean sleep latency below 8 minutes in the naps, and had at least no more than 1 nap (for idiopathic hypersomnia) or 2 naps (for narcolepsy diagnosis) where REM sleep was reached. Different types of Sleep Study C. Split Night Study - Is conducted when moderate or severe sleep apnea has been discovered or strongly suspected during the first part of the night's study. {Diagnostic Study (2 hrs)} - The second half of the night is used to determine the necessary CPAP pressure required to alleviate apnea. (Therapeutic Study) - Starting pressure of CPAP is 4 cmH2O then titrated further. - 6-8 hours. Different types of Sleep Study D. Therapeutic Study (CPAP/BIPAP Titration) - Monitoring patient's breathing and adjusting the CPAP or BIPAP pressure to determine the proper air pressure required to prevent upper airway blockage, eliminating pauses in their breathing while they sleep. (6-8 hrs) - Starting pressure of CPAP is 4 cmH2O then titrated further. Different types of Sleep Study E. Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) - This test is administered over a full day at the sleep clinic and is used to measure how awake or alert your patient is during the day. - It also measures if they can stay awake for a certain amount of time in a relaxing, quiet, and stimulation-free environment. Different types of Sleep Study F. Home sleep apnea test - is a very simplified breathing monitor that tracks your breathing, oxygen levels, and breathing effort while worn. It does not fully capture what is monitored with an overnight sleep study.
