    Stanford researchers converted a basement into a mock prison and randomly assigned 24 male college students to roles of prisoners or guards. The experiment was intended to last 14 days but had to be stopped after only 6 days because the guards began harassing and abusing their power over the prisoners, causing some prisoners to have extreme emotional reactions. The findings showed that even normal individuals can conform to assigned social roles and the dynamics of a prison environment can negatively impact human behavior.
