TROUBLESHOOTING ALTERNATORS
Quick REFERENCE GUIDE
General Rules
Take the necessary precautions to avoid
personal injury and equipment damage.
Local logistation applies.
Some tesis reouire the engine to run
Engine speed must be nominal, unless othenvise specified.
OvertUndenoltage & OverUndarsneed protections may dificultthe tests
‘These can be tured OFF. during tese procedures,

6. Test the AVR supply
al In Auxdiary Windings and
Self Excited alternators the surply
voltage ofthe AVR is considered
normal between 150 & 200VAC.
Irsuppiy voltage to the AVR is
‘sgnincantly lower and windings are
OK refer ta points 8 and to restore
residual magnetisn
by) In PMO atemators, this is tested
sefarately, and 2s such leads from
the PWG are disconnected Fam
the avr.
Tho voltage acroce P2,P2 and PA
should be between 170.6 220VAC
and balanced scrass phases.
Powersugply OK => point 7,
7. AVR faults
lithe unit has passed through all
previous tests, the AVR or its
connections can be at fault,
‘The most typical symptoms of poor
connections are:
«High Vottage
Can be caused ky loss of sensing
‘torn thernain stator
= Low Voltage
Can be caused by loss of power
supply tothe AVR.
‘Unstable Voltage
Can bo caused by loose or
damaged wiring ton the AVR to
‘he Main Stator
Wiring OK => AdjustReplaceavR
