Joint Transportation Research Program Project No: SPR-3470 Project Title: Construction of MSE Wall using tire shred-sand

mixture as backfill Date: Sept. 20, 2011 Participants: Monica Prezzi (Purdue University) Rodrigo Salgado (Purdue University) Varenya Kumar Duvvuru Mohan (Purdue University) Barry Partridge (INDOT) Athar Khan (INDOT) Nayyar Zia Siddiki (INDOT) The meeting began at 10:00 am. The progress of the research was discussed in the meeting. Varenya Kumar presented the background and overview of the project, including all the tasks and additional tasks assigned. Further, he presented the results from the pullout tests performed on reinforcement ladders embedded in tire shred-sand mixture of 0:100, 50:50, 60:40, 70:30 and 80:20 volume mixing ratios of tire shreds to sand. Rodrigo Salgado advised not to plot the results of 80:20 due to the high levels of segregation observed in the mixture for the particular mixing ratio. Nayyar Zia Siddiki inquired if it would be possible to have different ratios of the mixture at different heights to minimize the weight of the backfill without the problem of segregation. Rodrigo Salgado commented that it would be an idea to be tested on the field and it would still be problematic to have a high ratio of tire shreds at the bottom, leaving void spaces for the sand from top to settle down. Varenya Kumar then presented the results from the large-scale direct shear tests performed on the mixture. Monica Prezzi and Rodrigo Salgado suggested that the results be plotted with a zero intercept no apparent cohesive intercept not considering the mild dilatancy shown at lower confinements. This would be a better reflection of the shear strength parameters with higher friction angles obtained. Varenya Kumar presented the design summary compiled with the results of all the tests performed on the mixture, providing the necessary details needed in design for the practical use of the mixture. Nayyar Zia Siddiki asked if the fact that some of the data was for Ottawa sand would affect the design values when a different soil type is used on the field. Monica Prezzi mentioned that though these values will not remain exactly the same for a different soil type, they would tend to be on the conservative side and the change would be minimal. Varenya Kumar ended the presentation mentioning that all the assigned tasks were complete. Barry Partridge asked about the deliverables at the end of the project. Monica Prezzi mentioned that the final presentation, after a few changes, would be submitted on time. She clarified that this was an implementation project and that a report was not required. Nayyar Zia Siddiki said that the design summary would be preferred in a Microsoft Word

document, so that it could be added into the design guidelines. Monica Prezzi agreed and confirmed that the contents of the design summary, as in the PPT presented in this meeting, would be transferred to a Word document and submitted along with the finalized presentation, thus completing all the requirements of the project.
