Question 1
A component with constant rate of failures occurrence of 10−4 h−1 is tested after it operates for 2
month. Average length of the test is 1h, and of repair is 10h. Once every 5 tests a repair would be
needed.

1. Determine the average unavailability of this component.

2. If we have a system consisting of 3 of these components in parallel. Find the average system’s
unavailability.

Question 2
A system has three possible states. In state 1 the system is fully operational. In state 2 it operates in a
degraded mode, and in state 3 it is in failed mode. The system can be repaired to a fully operational
state in two cases: (1) complete repair once it fails, (2) in degraded mode and when it is reconditioned.
The system starts in a fully operational state at time zero. The transition rate diagram is as follows. The
−1 −1 −1 −1
transition rates are given as λ 1=2 year s , λ 2=0.5 year s , r r=0.5 year s ,r c =0.5 year s .

1. Find the Laplace transform of probability that the system is in state 3 at time t.
2. Calculate the system point unavailability and availability at 1 year.
