Large flow swit intensities increase the frictional losses which reduce the available net positive suction head (NPSH) ofthe pumps. The swirls can also cause pre-otation atthe impeller inlet. panicularly inthe ease of vertical turbine pumps where impellers very near tothe sump bottom, itmay lead ta shock fosses a the entry resulting inthe pump operating at off-duty point affecting the cavitation characteristics ‘of the pump. Site constraints also have significant effect onthe configuration. Proper pump intake design takes care of problems refered above, Though pump sump and intake are designed as per general guidelines actual design and measures forts smooth fonetioning are finalized through model studies. The compasition ofthe committee responsible for formulation of this standard is given in Annex A. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with the fina valuc, ‘observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with 1S 2:1960 "Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised). Generally ‘pump intake isin the form of bell mouth, suction bow! and coluran pipeline. The intake can be horizontal or vertical or inclined, In some eases, the intake is part of pump itself (see Fig. 1). FREE SURFACE FLOW @ 2.3 Pumpbays In case of multiple pump installations the pumps are usually separated from each other by separating walls (piers) Individual pump chamber is then called as pumpbay. 2.4 Dimple Vortex AA five surface vortex making a dimple on the fee surface without ar entrainment (see Fg, 2 8). 25 Air Entraining Vortex ‘A vortex which enters an intake from the free surface ‘with intermittent oF continuous air entrainment (ce Fig. 2b) 2.6 Submerged Vortex (Swirl) ‘A vortex which emers the intake from a solid flow boundary with submerged vapour core (see Fig. 2). 2.7 Swirling Flow Flow usualy caused by large scale rotation in the bulk ‘of the fluid inthe sump whichis then amplified as the flow converges into the intake orscwarce, ELEVATION pump [= PLAN Fic, 1 Derwumiow Sketen rox Pus, Sue AND INTAKE 51 AM (10.10:98.1)VALIO UProsmi920 [NSE FROM BIS FOR ANDHRA PRADESH POWER GENERATION CORPORATION LTD. - VUAVAWADA ON 9412020 10 LPPLIED BY BOOK SUPPLY BUREAU STAM FALIIINDER THF LICFRSE FROM RIS FOR ANDHRA PRANFSH POWER CFNFRATION CORPORATION TD -VLIAYAWANA ON'9149070 19 8051 AKL 1S 15310 : 2003 5 2.8 Crict Submergence 2.10 Swirt Angle 2 28.1 Critical Submergence for Horizontal Intakes The ie angle is defined as 5 1s the minimum vertical depth fom the surice of = arctan Ye 2 seater the pump sump othe top most pont of intake 0 = arctan 7, = required to prevent air entraning vortices (se Fig. 3). where 3 2.8.2 Critical Submergence for Vertical Intakes = tangential velocity component of swirling flow; 3 med s Ivis the minimum depth from the water surface tthe - tran taka prevent entty ofr and formation of Y,~ axl velocity component of flow in pipeline. meres inicted in Fig Thisisesedtomexcurelntensiy ofswiing ow 2.9 Minimum Submergence ‘The depth of submergence over a bellmouth at the allowable lowest water level in the pump intake, 2.11 Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) [Net positive suction head (NPSH) isthe total inlethead = = (o)DIMP Le woRTER (a) ie eMTRAINNS (c) TUaMERGED VORTEX WoRTEX (Swiet Fic. 2 Vortex CiassinicaTion I - Tee (a) wonenTaL ake (a) yuRNEE oom BELLOW NSE FROM BIS FOR ANDHRA PRADESH POWER GENERATION CORPORATION LTO. GANTI-VORTEX/SWIRL DEVICES ‘Various expedients (anti-vortex/anti-swiel devices) need tobe evolved first with Froudian velocity through intake ifthe low conditions are observed with occurrence of ‘swirls and vortices. The efforts should be made to ‘minimise preotation. ‘The ype ofexpedionts generally adopted are flow guide baffle wall, breast walls, floating rafts, grid walls, anti- swirl cones, splitter vanes, ete, However, the most suitable or optimum suitable device can be finalised ‘through trial runs on the model and the solution may vary from ease to case ‘The effectiveness of the anti-vortex device shall be verified for low velocities higher than Froudian, and upto the actual velocity, that is, prototype velocity, as may be considered necessary. \VUAYAWADA ON 9142020 10 yProse1920 [NSE FROM BIS FOR ANDHRA PRADESH POWER GENERATION CORPORATION LTD, - VWAVAWADA ON 91412020 10:51 51 AM (10.10.98 1) A 5 2 5 STAM ‘AU UNDER THE LICENSE FROM BIS FOR ANDHRA PRADESH POWER GENERATION CORPORATION LTD. - VUAYAWADA ON 042020 10 5151 AM 1S 15310 : 2003 ANNEX A, (Foreword) COMMITTEE COMPOSITION Intake Structures Sectional Commitee, WRD 11 Orgomaran Representa) nal Watt Comes, New Det Sim $name ‘iat Hey Ecce New Debi Siu.
