Seat Ring Retention methods
Seat ring retention methods are based on
pressure drop and temperature
Screwed-in seat ring
o Seat ring is screwed to the body or cage
o Economical in small valves
o Cannot be used in high temperature and
temperature cycling applications
o Leakage between valve body and seat ring can
quickly erode the materials
o In corrosive applications the ring seizes in the
body
o Requires special tools to remove seat ring from
body
Seat Ring Retention methods

Clamped seat ring

o Drop-in design method which eliminates
seat ring seizure
o The clamping force for seat ring comes
from body/bonnet bolting through cage or
seat ring retainer
o Suited for high temperature and
temperature cycling applications
Plug Guiding methods
Guiding is provided to stabilize valve plug from fluid reaction forces.

Types of Plug Guiding Methods :

o Cage Guiding

o Post Guiding
Plug Guiding methods
Cage guiding

o Provides massive guiding area

o Minimizes lateral movement of the plug
thereby preventing chattering and vibration
o Extends control valve life

Post guiding

o Suited for thick sticky fluids

o Seat ring retainer holds guide bushing
o Seat ring retainer helps in seat ring retention and
gasket compression
Types of Plugs

Unbalanced Plug
o Provides tight shutoff
oPrimary leakage path only
o Suitable for high temperature
applications
o Preferred in smaller valve sizes with low
pressure drop
o More actuator force required in high
pressure drop applications
Types of Plugs

Balanced Plug
o Holes drilled through the plug
o Eliminates plug instability
o Lesser actuator force is required compared to
unbalanced type
o Secondary leakage path between valve plug
and cage
Flow Direction
Unbalanced – Flow Up (PTTO)
o PTTO – Pressure Tends To
Open
oPreferred Flow direction
o PTTC – Pressure Tends To
Close
