The following is an outline delineating the steps of a concept analysis using Rodgers’ (2000) evolutionary
method. Nelson, K. (2022). Sleep quality: An evolutionary concept analysis. Journal of Advanced Nursing,
57(1), 144-151.
The realm for the study was a search of the scientific literature from electronic databases Cumulative
Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL, PsycINFO, PubMED, Web of Science, and
JSTOR) and other definitions from online dictionaries.
3. Identify the attributes of the concept and the contextual basis of the concept
a. sleep efficiency
b. sleep latency
c. sleep duration
d. wake after sleep
Antecedents: physiological (e.g., age, circadian rhythm, body mass index, NREM, REM), psychological
(e.g., room temperature, television/device use), and family/social commitments.
Definition of Sleep quality: is defined as an individual’s self-satisfaction with all aspects of the sleep
experience.
Nurses with good sleep quality has positive effects on his/her feelings, reflexes and positive
relationships.
Nurses with poor sleep quality can contribute to disease formation and poor health outcomes.
For further study and application, the author suggested: Research to give an extensive consequences
of poor sleep quality affecting the nurses. Requiring the nurses and clinicians to instruct the
importance of good sleep.
