PRIMARY PREPARA- Tl Unpacking your TOYOTA 5000 Before commencing to sew, bet’ learn w little about your machine by reading through thin instruc: tion book carefully Start by placing your TOYOTA $000 on the table and remove the compartment by drawing ir out in the direction of the arrow ‘Connecting Foot Control and Power Cord Before phugaing in your TOYO: TA 5000, fe sure that the woltage 6 the same as that of your TOYOTA 5000, The ma- chime’s voltage is written on a plate at the right end of your TOYOTA 5000, Take foot control out of the eompartment and push the foot control plug into the ebectrical feceptace at the right end of your TOYOTA 5000, Ther the house power sipply nevt the machine 10 Power and light switch cin be “on” or “afl” by pressing the switch which is found on the right end of your TOYOTA 5000. Attaching the Extension Plate For ordinary sewing, the exten: sion plate will make your work easier Carefully place the extension plate on the free arm, levelling the extension plate with the face of free arm and tum down the ‘extension plate support legs with the left hand. Then pin (A) oa the back side of the extension plate will engage automatically ia the corresponding hole (B) in the free arm. To remove the extension plate, tum up the extension support legs with the left hand in the direction of the arrow, Wiping off your TOYOTA 5000 The sewing machine has been oiled liberally during manufac: ture und in spite of careful cleaning surplus ofl may still remain on the machine. Take a soft cloth and wipe around the needle and the free arm DISCONNECT MAINS SUPPLY Changing the Light Bulb Open the face plate as shown opposite. RECONNECT MAINS SUPPLY To change the Wght bulb, turn it counterclockwise, When insert- ing a new light bulb, press it into the holder and turn it clockwise, Removing the Bobbin Case ‘Open the shuttle cover towards you and turn the hand wheel nti] the needle reaches its highest position. With right thumb and index finger, open the hinged latch (A) at the front of the boblyim case: and withdraw the bobbin case from the holder post. = Winding the Bobbin Molding the hand wheel firmly with the left hand loosen the hand wheel by turning the stop motion knob towards you. This disengages the stitching mechan- ism automatically ‘Take an empty bobbin from the accessory box and place the bobbin on the winder spindle, Then draw the thread from the reel through the thread guide (A) and turn dockwise round the pre-tension device (B) as shown in the picture, Wind the thread clockwise round the bobbin several times and press to the right. Then start winding by gently pressing down the foot controller. Stop wind- ing when the bobbin is wound about 2mm from the edge of the bobbin If you notice that the bobbin is winding unevenly as in Figures I and Ill, loosen the set-screw of the pretension device with the aid of small screwdriver and adjust by letting the pre-tension device up or down until the vending becomes even, Figure IT shows a correctly wound bob- bin. Inserting the Bobbin When the bobbin is wound, place it inside its case, Make sure that the thread runs in the direction of the arrow ‘Threading the Lower Thread Side the thread into the slot om the edge of the bobbin case. The thread is pulled in under the tension spring. Also check that the bobbin rotates in the ditec- tion of the arrow when the thread is pulled. When straight and tigrag stitch. ing, pass the bobbin thread through the thread guide on bobbin case, When adjusting the bobbin thread tension, adjust the tension so that tke bobbin, cuse_casily falls down unser its. owa_weight whea you are held. ing on the thread only, You can enjoy the better balance of the lower thread and the upper thread, Fist foe ae, 9 .S= Abeays we Type 705 (Needle) Inserting the Bobbin Case After checking that the needle bar is im its highest position, insert the bobbin case the opposite way you removed it, Choice of the Needle The machine is fitted with needle size No.14 type 705, You will also find a number ‘of spare needles in the accessory box. Before changing the needle, check if needle is bent or blunt. Changing the Needle With the needle bar in the highest position, loosen the needle clamp screw, Then turn the flat side of the needle to the back and insert the needle as high as it will go. Tighten the needle clamp screw firmly. It has been found over the years that the ever increasing number of so called tension problems, are, in fact ere the wrong com- bination of needle and thread. PLEASE READ THE CHART opposite which shows the cor- rect needle and thread combina- tion for the paticular material to be used, A HEAVY THREAD IN A FINE NEEDLE WILL CAUSE: * unbalanced stitch tensioning © thread stri © skipped stitches " puckered seams ‘Changing the Feet The presser foot quickly and easily snaps off and on the shank. Raise the presser bar lifter and make sure that the needle is in its highest position. Then snap down the clamping lever to remove it Center the new preser foot under the shane, Lower the presser bar lifter so that the shank opening fits over the presser foot pin. Feet holder is changed by loosening, the presser foot screw. Threading the Upper Thread Tum the hand wheel towards you to tise the take-up lever to its highest position and place the spool of thread on the left-hand spool pin. Lead the thread through all the threading points as shown oppo- site. Thread the take-up lever from back to front, guiding the thread down over top of lever and then up into the eyelet, Thread the needle eye from front to back, pulling about 15 cm of the thread. Drawing up the Lower Thread Hold the end of the upper thread with your feft hand, Tum the hand wheel towards you slowly until the needle and the take-up lever move down and up again, then stop the hand wheel. Pull the upper thread slowly so that the lower thread will be brought up in a boop. You should never pull the upper thread too hard as this may bend the needle, Pull both ends of the threads owt about 1Scm from under the foot and place them either to the left or right of the presser foot as shown. The old fashion method used by most machine sewers for many years who have been taught to place the threads behind the presser foot, has been found to be incorrect, as this has caused most of the machine jomming problems of the past. REMEMBER ALWAYS PLACE THE THREADS EITHER TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT NEVER BEHIND THE FOOT Thread Cutter On. the back of the presser bar you ‘will find the thread cutter. This cutter makes it easy to cut off the thread at the end of a seam, 4. STRAIGHT STITCHING We begin by sewing a straight stitch which is the seam most Frequently used, Set your TOYOTA 5000 a5 shown op- posite. Stitch Length Control Knob ‘The stitch lerigth control knob as shown, is ued to adjust the length of the stitch.(ie. how fast the material feeds through the preiser foot), If you require a long stitch, set the conteol to 4. For a short stitch, set contra! kacb to 1, Normal sewing is carried owt with a setting be: tween 2 and 3, For satin stitch, set control quarter between 0 and 1. Thia setting will vary from machine to machine — if you tequire a satin stitch, check setting by sewing on a. memple picee of the sume material first. Zigzag Width Control Lever For straght sewing. set the igzag width control lever at “0". By turning the zigzag width lever clockwise or to larger number of the scale, rigrag width is increased accordingly. The numerals marked shows sagrag width in millirmeter. Reverse Sewing Button. For the sewing in reverse, you push in the reverse button as far as it will go. The machine will sew backward as long as the button ba im. The Limiter If you wish to maintain the selected width of zigzag stitches, engage the stop locks, The stop locks can be sot by prosing in slightly and moving to the desired position, Left stop lock determines the minimum width, while right stop lock control the maximum, Preser Foot Pressure Control Dial Presser foot pressure can be adjusted with the sid of a graduated dial located on top cover om the left side of the machine. Set the dial in position $ for normal premuire but for thin fabsics it may be better to set the dial at 310 4, Drop Feed Device The height of the feed dog can be adjusted with the drop feed lever, SukMal” position can sow most fabrics, no matter what kind of fabric i used, When the lever it turned to “pas {the feed dog drops below the surface of the needle plate and machine stops feeding. The position is for free motion, daming. sewing button and em- broidery. Starting Sewing With preawe foot up, tum the hand wheel toward you and penetrate needle in the fabric positioning about 10mm in from the edge of the fabric, To reinforce the scum at the beginning you sew in reverse to the edge of the fabric, After a few wiitches of reverse sewing, release the reverse but- fon and commence forward sewing by gently proming down the foot control, Foot Controller The speed of the machine is regulated solely by increasing or decreasing pressure on the foot control, You should never try to increuse the feeding by pulling the fabric or slow it down by pulling the fabric, Turning corners: Slow the speed ax you approach the comer and stop a. stitch away from the corer. Then tum the hand wheel towards you manually to pasi- tion the needle in the fabric at the pivot point Raise the presser foot and tum the fabric with the needle in Lower the presser foot and sew forward in the ocw direvtion. Ending a Seam At the end of a seam, press the reverse push button to sew a few stitches for reinforcement and stop the machine when the take-up lever is in its highest position, Rene the promer foot and vemowe the fabric uway from you, Cut the thread with the thread cutter attached to the back side of the preter bas, ‘Cloth Guide The cloth guide is used for stitching close to the Fabric, or to make a wide hem up to 5 mm in a straight and uniform line. Flace the guide in the hole to the right of the needle plate on the bed of the machine and tighten the thumb serew firmly, adjust- ing the pside tw the desired position. Run the machine with the edge of the fabric i. ching the guide, It is also avatiable in stitching a curved seam: Tension Control Perfect tension; Correct tensions wa imporant for the good appeatunce of the stitches. The temion on the upper and the lower threads should be equal and strong enough to lack both threads in the center of the work, Your machine haw been texted with the thread which accompanies it, it may be necessary to adjust the thread tenon somewhat if you use the thread of another thick- meas. Upper tension too strong: If the upper theead les straight along the upper surface of the fable decrease tension by turning thread tension regulator in the direction af the arcow. Upper tension too week: If the bobbin thread lies straight along the underside of the fabric increase tension by turning thread tnsion regulator in the direction of the arrow. Tension of lower thread: If it is necessary bo adjust the tension of the lower thread, take out the small screwdriver from the aecer sory box and adjust the tension. Fit it im the screw on the tereston spring and tum it not more than 1/10th of a tum to the left if the thread tension is too hard, to the right if it is too loose, §. ZIGZAG STITCHING When going over to cigzng stitching, set your TOYOTA 5000 as shown oppostte. Needle Postion Coatral The needle should be im ite highest position, to avoid tearing fabric or bending the needle, Select needle position by turning the needle position selector knob, Thread tension for xigzag stitch- ing, To enjoy the better appearance of Zigzag. stitching us shown op- posite, loosen slightly the upper tension. This stitching requires ess tension. than straight stitch- ing. 6, TWIN NEEDLE STITCHING Threading the needle ‘Thread is in the same way as for straight stitching except: Place spool of the thread an the left spool pin and pass the thread between center and back tension disc and through right eye of needle. Place another spool of the thread on the right spool pin and pass the thread between center and fromt tension disc und through Jefl eye of needle. Set your TOYOTA 5000 ax shown opposite, Note:Set the zigzag width lever between O and 3.5. The lever between 3.5 and 7 will break needle. 7. ROLL HEMMING ‘The hemmer is used when you wish to sow long hems in the fabric which is not excemively thick, Set your TOYOTA 5000 as shown oppoaite, Crease a double 3mm fold for about 3 cm along the edge of the fabric to be hemmed, Place the folded edge under the preser foot and turn manually the hand wheel towards you several times With the needle being in the fabric, raise the presser foot and inert the folded edge into the mouth of the foot. ‘Then lower the presser foot and fei ‘the machine feed it, guiding it somewhal with your tight hand not to slide out of the hemmer. If too much material enters the hemmer, draw the fabric somewhat to the lett. ‘Zigzag Hemming Sew in the same way ax in the straight stitch hemming. 8. BLIND HEM STITCH Biind hem stitch is used for hemiming skirts, trousers, suits and soon without the stitches showing om the right side of the material, Set your TOYOTA 3000 at shown opposite. PATCHING For putching the fabric, set your TOYOTA 5000 as shown oppo- site, Cut out a patch of the patching fabric large enough to cover the wom part completely. Sew the patch on the right side without stitches being outside of the Fatch to make a perfect stitch ing and then cut away the worn material om the reverse side about 0,5—1 cm from the stitch- ‘ing. Patching jeney material Set your TOYOTA $000 in the same way as usual patching, ‘With cutting the comer of the patch around sew around about 1 cm from edge of the patch, wheo you can make a good finish with pinning wp it on the wor material and with paper on the reverse side of the worn material to prevent creasing stitches, and after sewing the paper should be removed, 12, EDGE-TO-EDGE STITCHING This stitching is used for joining the edges of two pieces of the fabric. Set your machine in the same way as paiching, 13, ELASTIC STITCH Heavy stretch material: Set your TOYOTA 5000 as shown opposite. ‘The elastic stitch is a triple-lock stitch combining stretchability and strength. it is particularly useful for sew- ing seams where added strength is needed and for sleeve inser- tion, as well as for sewing in jemey aned other stretch material. Light Stretch material Set your TOYOTA $000 as shown opposite, 14. PUTTING IN ELASTIC Set your TOYOTA S000 as shown opposite. Place the elastic on the fabric as shown opposite, You just sew. showly, feeding enough material under the foot, to gather it instead of stretching the elastic. ‘This stitch remains supple and can be stretched, ‘You haveanather way of sewing with pulling the elestic when sewing it on the elastic material. 1s. ZIPPERS Set your TOYOTA $000 as shown opposite. To sew the left side of the zip, sew along touching the left edge of the zip. ‘To sew the right ste of the zip, turn the zip and sew along in the sun way as the left. Conceal Fastener If you wish to sew a conceal zip, lay it under the skit of the zipper foot and sew im the same wav as the above mentioned 16. MAKING BUTTON- HOLES. Buttonhole length First decide how long the button opening should be. This depends on the diameter and thickness of the button, Then add ut least Simi and mark the beginning and ead of the buttonhole on the fabric with u basting line ar tallor's chalk, Buttonhole stitch width ‘You can change the buttonhole stitch width as you like by moving the zigeag width control Jever. The stitch width depends on the diameter of the button, thickness and material of the fabric, Set your TOYOTA 5000 as shown opposite, Choose the most suitable width for your buttenhole according to the size of the button and material ‘The button sliding part “A” of the buttonhale foot should be pushed completely to the back at the start Marking of the buttonhole shou- id pass right through the middle of the foot, and the arrow mark- ed on the top part “B" of the feat should be on the beginning line of the buttonhale, Bar Tacking: Set the pattern selector knob to [) for bar tack and sew about 3-6 stitches without moving the fabric, 28 Side Stitching: Raise the needle out of work by tuming hand wheel towards you and turn the pattern selector knob to [] as shown opposite. Sew in reverse satin stitch for the left side stitching to the end Une. After completing work stop the mach. ine with the needle mised. You can algo use the metric gradua- tions on the buttonhole foot to make all the buttonholes exactly the sare length. Bar Tuck: Turn the pattem sel ector knob to [J for bar tack and sew about $—6 slitches on the marking as shown opposite. Then stop the machine with the needle raised out of work. Side Stitching: Turn the pattern selector knob to[Jand sew satin stitch for the right side stitching until it catches the first bar tack. Corded buttonholes To reinforce buttonholes the following method is recommend: ed: Tuke some heavy thread, auch as buttonhole twist orextra strong thread. k the thresd on the prow: sion and sew |n the same way a ordinary buttonholes. After finishing to sew, pull the end of the gmp thread so that the loop forms a reinforcement at one end of buttonhole. Qut off the thread at the other end or, even berter, thread the ends through to the reverse side and tie them. Cutting the Buttonholes When you have finished sewing all of the buttonholes, it is time to cut them. Do this by piercing the fabric at right angles until the curved edge reaches down to the buttonhole. Then incline the cutter towards you and move it carefully forwards so a3 not tO cut through the seam thread, Stop cutting when it reaches the closing bar. 17. SEWING ON BUTTONS Set your TOYOTA 5000 as thown opposite, Position a button under the button sewing foot and lower the peedie into center of the left hole by tuming the hund wheel by hund slowly towards you. Lower the bution wewing foot. ‘Continue to tum the hand whee! by hand watil the needle rises out of the button and is just above the foot. Then adjust the throw of the needle 40 as to be equal to the distance between the holes in the button and set the left stop lock of the zigzag width control lever, Run the machine at medium speed, miaking about six or more qigzag stitches fo the end on the heft side, To reinforce the stitching, return the zigzag width ta “O" and make about three stitches, 18, CORDING Set your TOYOTA S000 a thown opposite, ‘With pencil or taifor's chalk, mark length of the line which you wish to sew, You must adjust the zigzag width in accordance with the width of the cord, Then lower the cording foot, guiding the cord into the ‘on the underside of the foot and slide the cord into the spring on the foot. Put the cord away well behind the cording foot and it will be necessary to see that it runs freely while you are sewing. 19, QUILTING The quilting guide will enable you to sew horizontal lines on padded fabric without the necessity of marking them in advance Set your TOYOTA 5000 as shown opposite, To attach the quilting guide raise the presser foot lever and insert the quilting guide through the apting hole on the feet holder, Lower the presser foot and adjust the quilting guide at a distance from the needle which you require. You can easily sew with wider seam allowance by letting the quilting guide ride on the previous stitching line or the edge of the fabric. 32 3 20. FREE MOTION STITCHING By using embroidery hoop, many designs and monogramm- ings are achieved. Set your TOYOTA 5000 as shown op- poulte. Correct needles and threads are important for the good appear- ance of the stitches. As the upper threads, use lustrous and alight threads and as the lower threads, use white cotton threads No. 80 to No, 100, Draw your desired design on the fabric with a pencil or tailor’s chalk. Stretch the fabric on an embroidery hoop, as firmly and equally as possible, centering the design and place it under the needle, For the best appearance ‘of embroidery work, make ten- sion of the upper thread as weak as possible lest the lower thread tbe pulled up on use surface. Turn the hand wheel slowly to bring needle down into the fabric and tuke up bobbin thread through the fabric. Holding both threads by hand, start operating the machine, First sew along the outline of the design with a satin stitch, maving outside to inside, Next when filling in outlines, place stitches in parallel lines, shifting the direction of the hoop move- ment as appropriate to the design. At the end of a work, set zigzag width control lever “0” to sew a few stitches for reinforcement. 21. PARALLEL RAISED SEAMS (PINTUCKING) Set your TOYOTA S000 as shown opposite. The upper tension should be slightly weaker than in the case of straight sewing. The height of ‘the raised seam is adjusted by means of the thread tension — the harder the thread tension, ‘the higher the seam will be. If you wish to sew several parallel seams, you can ute the quilting guide as an edge guide. 35 A pinwek is formed by the bobbin thread which pulls the two top threads together, so that the fabric between the needles fises and forms a tuck. When you are finished with the pin- tuck work, press down the raised seams by an iron to get the etter finish of the work. 22. CUT-WORK APPLIQUE An attractive decorative effect ts obtained by sewing cut-outs of materials of different colors or tulle to the cloth, Applique work is mainly employed on collars, ladies’ and children’s dresses, linen. and the like. Set your TOYOTA S000 ax shown opposite Cut off the piece of the fabric with the design as you wish and buste the design to the fabric or shown opposite. Overcast a zigzag stitch around the design which you basted or placed a straight stitching. Hun- dreds of other uses will become apparent as you continue to use the machine, For rectangle corner put the needle on the outer edge, tum the work and continue sewing, The comer will now be ower- sewn. At pointed comer stop sewing Smm in front of the eomer. Then turn back zigzag stitch while sewing on “0”. Raise the presser foot and tura the fabric. Set again zigzag onto $mm and carefully continue sewing. 23. CLEANING AND OLLING In order to serve you satisfactor- ily, your TOYOTA S000 re. quites cleaning and oiling like ell other precision machines. The needle plate should occasionally be removed. To prevent flocking, the bobbin case and shuttle should also be cleaned whenever necessary. This should preferably be done whenever you change the colour of thread and the fabric. Also check that no thread remainders wind around the center shaft of the shuttle or feed tecth, The shaft should be wiped clean with a piece of doth which has been damped with oil. The teeth of the feed dog alo should be brushed clean. Clean the inside of the shuttle hook with a brush, Turn the hand wheel towards you to tum the body for clenaing. Then apply one drop of oil after cleaning, 37 Loosen the top cover set screws with a screw driver included in the accessory box and then top cover will be taken off easily. The arrows in the picture indicate the oil holes which should be lubricated every week if the machine is used frequent- ly. But even a machine which is not used so often should be lubricated since the oi] has a tendency to evaporate. However, it is important that you do not give the machine too such oil w few drops at each lubricating point are sufficient. Too much oil does not give berer results, the oil only runs out and can stain the fabrics. Do not oil belt drive Apply the oi to the points indicated by arrows in the picture. After oiling. run the machine rapidly for a few minutes to allow the oil to penetrate every part, Abways clean the machine body after using the machine, Wipe off dust, thumbmark and oil om the machine with a dry soft cloth. Use only light machine oil not a synthetic oil, 24, PUTTING THE ACCES- SORIES INTO TOP CON- TAINER Open the top container and put the accessories in it us shown opposite. 28. PUTTING THE MACHINE AWAY Pull out the foot control plug. Wind the cord around your hand. starting at the control, Place it in its compartment and hold the cord in place beside the foot control in the compartment. ‘Wind the cord from the machine towards the plug and put the folded cord into the compart- ment, 26, TROUBLE CHART Refer to threading instructions Improperly threaded see page No, 8 and 11, Loosen tension on upper thread Too much tension by tuming thread tension knob . to the left, Starting with take wp in Always start sewing with take incorrect position up lever in highest position, Improper setting of Refer to needle setting instruc: needle tions see page No. 9, Bent ot eye of needle toa sheep Try a new needle, Discard all blunt of bent needles lie ee and teplace with new, Tensions too tight Boe, cane cpa nS | 16 and 17.
