1. Background

Commercial Fisheries Management Areas spatial data

Fisheries New Zealand has completed the review of the Commercial Regulation Coordinates.

The changes have been approved by Cabinet and are implemented on 29th January 2020.

From this date onwards, you will be able to access the following updated datasets on the Ministry for
Primary Industries’ Open Data Portal:

1. Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs)


2. General Statistical Areas (STATs)
3. Quota Management Areas (QMAs)
4. Commercial Regulations, containing current:
• Commercial fishing regulations (includes closed seamount areas and PSH 71A
approvals)
• Benthic protection areas (BPAs)
• Fishery notices (includes temporary closures that are not S186 closures)
• Marine Reserves Type 1
• Marine mammal sanctuary (one area closed for set netting)
• Ministerial decision
• Submarine cables and pipeline protection zones

In addition, on the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Open Data Portal you will also find links to data
from other Government agencies relevant to the Fisheries Industry:
Land Information New Zealand:
• Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
• Topo50 Coastline
Department of Conservation:
• Marine Mammal Sanctuaries (MMS).
2. How to access the data
This document provide a step-by-step guide to aid you with downloading the updated datasets listed
above. You will be able to download the datasets in a variety of formats, such as Shapefile, KML, CSV
etc.
These datasets are available to the public on the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Open Data Portal and
will not require an OIA request to access.

Fisheries New Zealand Data

Step 1: Open Data Portal Website


Navigate to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Open Data Portal:
http://data-mpi.opendata.arcgis.com/

Step 2: Fisheries New Zealand


Access the Fisheries New Zealand Section by clicking
Step 3: Table of available Datasets
Find relevant datasets by scrolling through the list of available records or provide a keyword in the
search bar.
Step 4: Dataset Information Page
Double Click on the General Fisheries Management Areas box to access navigate to this dataset’s
information page.
Step 5: Metadata Overview
Click on View Metadata to find an overview of relevant information on the General Fisheries
Management Areas dataset.

Step 6: Visualisation
Click on Visualisation in the top right corner to find a preview of the General Fisheries Management
Areas dataset.
Step 7: Download the data
To download the data, click on the dataset’s information page Download.

There are three data formats available, Spreadsheet (CSV), Google Earth (KML), and GIS (Shapefile).
The respective dataset appear in the bottom menu bar depending on your selection.
Available data formats:

- Spreadsheet (CSV)

- Google Earth (KML)


- GIS (Shapefile)

Downloading as Shapefile will include Metadata in the .xml file.


Metadata is information that describes the content of the data which you have downloaded, such as
description, limitations, currency, update cycles, author, restrictions etc.
3. Other Agencies’ Data

Step 1: Available Datasets


In the table of available datasets, some datasets have an extra icon .
This icon indicates that the source of the dataset is not Fisheries New Zealand.

Step 2: Datasets download page


Clicking the above box will direct you to the respective agency’s data download page

Note the Dataset description and explore its Metadata and Dataset history.
Step 3: Available Data formats
Clicking the above Download button in the top right corner opens up the export menu.

Select the Format you desire and the map projection you require.
Click accept terms and create download.

Step 4: Register at the Land Information New Zealand data portal


Provide an email address and name and password to register free of charge

You will receive a confirmation email instantly.

Step 5: Download the data


Note the progress bar indicating how much of your data has been downloaded.

Your download is completed if you see below information box.


Step 6: Access the data
Note the compressed file in the bottom left of your browser window.

Save this compressed file locally on your device.
