11. I have _______________ seen the whole ([houl] весь) process myself.
Lord Sebastian Fanshawe is possibly the world’s laziest man. Last week I went along to
his beautiful countryside mansion to meet him. When his Lordship finally got out of
bed, at two o’clock in the afternoon, I asked who kept his home in such beautiful
condition.
1. Well, you see, I have servants, he said.
2. I have all the cleaning done for me by my maid, of course.
3. I have my cars washed by my chauffeur and the garden looked after by the
groundsman.

picked up the knife and fork and used them to slice through his Lordship’s bacon and
eggs.
5. Noticing my amazement, his Lordship said, Oh, I always have my food cut up for
me.
Do you do anything for yourself? I asked.
6. Oh, yes. I always wash myself in the bath, he said proudly.
7. I brush my teeth myself and ... oh, and I choose all my servants myself, though I
have them all interviewed by my mother first.

Having Everything Done
Two friends discuss an inheritance (наследство) and the work it has created.
I. Listening
1. William: Hello, Monica, where were you yesterday?
2. Monica: Hi, William. My grandmother passed away. We were at the hospital all day.
3. William: Oh no, that's terrible. Were you close (близки) to her?
4. Monica: Yes, I was quite close to her. My mother died when I was young and she
became almost like a substitute (замена) mother for me. I’m really going to miss her.
5. William: She must have been quite old.
6. Monica: Eighty-four! She had a long life and she wasn't ill for long, thankfully. I heard
this morning that I am going to inherit (унаследовать) her house.
7. William: I thought she lived in a small apartment in town?
8. Monica: Yes, she did, but she kept the old house near the lake. It became too big for
her to look after, but that house has been in our family for about five generations
(пять поколений). She would never have sold it.
9. William: All those houses near the lake are very old. What are you going to do with
it? Are you going to sell it?
10. Monica: No way! I could never sell my grandmother's house! I don't know, I think it
is my responsibility to repair the place and pass (передать) it onto my children.
11. William: That's a good way of looking at it. There must be a lot of work to do on it,
though (однако).
12. Monica: There really is! My brother said he will help with the expense (расходы). I
used to spend all my summers in that house. We would get up at seven in the
morning and have a swim before breakfast. I actually met my husband while fishing
there, it holds a lot of special memories for me. I really want to get it looking how it
used to, back to its former splendor (великолепие).
13. William: What do you know about building and decoration? Will you do it yourself or
have someone work on it for you?
14. Monica: I can handle a paint brush (обращаться с кистью), but not much more than
that. William: What needs doing to it? When did you last see it?
15. Monica: About two years ago, and it was in terrible condition.
16. William: Is the roof okay? In these old houses, that can be the most expensive thing.
05
17. Monica: We had the roof (крыша) totally re-done about six years ago, so I think that's
one thing we won't have to have looked at.
18. William: Is there a garden?
19. Monica: I wouldn't use the word "garden". There is a big plot of land (участок земли)
out the back, but it is all overgrown (зарос). We will have to have the grass cut back
and the trees pruned (сделать обрезку). There is a big old hole (яма) where a pond
used to be and we will have to have that filled in - it is pretty dangerous.
20. William: Is the house secure (безопасен)? Are all the doors in good condition? It is a
risk having a house standing empty for so long.
21. Monica: Yeah, you are right. All the doors are fine, but we will have to have some of
the windows fixed, there are a few broken ones upstairs. Some kids got into the
house last year.
22. William: Oh, that's awful (ужасно).
23. Monica: Yeah, they didn't do too much damage (вред), fortunately. I think they were
just looking for a bit of adventure. We had all the locks (замки) changed and it has
been alright ever since (с тех пор).
24. William: There must be some great historical features in such an old property (владение).
25. Monica: The wooden staircase (лестница) is just breathtaking (захватывает дух). We
are going to have it restored because a lot of the steps are pretty rotten (сгнили)
now and the banister (перила) isn't safe at all. But with a bit of love and a lot of
money, it will be like something out of “Gone With The Wind”! (“Унесенные ветром”)
26. William: Well, it doesn't sound so bad, Monica. You will have to invite me round
(пригласить в гости) to see the place when you get it fixed up (отремонтируете).
27. Monica: Of course, and if you know how to use a hammer (молотoк) and screwdriver
(отверткa), you are always welcome to come round sooner!
2. You will need to get your photo ___ for your new passport.

2. Once, in those long-ago days, far away in a country called Uganda, there lived a blacksmith and his name was
Wakaluga.
3. Wakaluga was the very finest blacksmith in the land, and every day a small crowd of people would gather at his
blacksmith shop just to watch him at work.
4. Early one morning, as Wakaluga was beginning work, a messenger from the king's court arrived.
5. "His Majesty says you are to go and see him immediately. He has a job for you to do," said the messenger.
6. Wakaluga was delighted. Hastily (поспешно) putting on his best white robes he hurried off to the palace, wondering
what the king wanted him to do.
7. He passed many of his friends about their early-morning tasks in the dusty roads, and to all of them he shouted
happily, "The king has sent for me! He has some work for me to do. Wish me luck!"
8. Wakaluga reached the palace and was shown into a little room by the gate, where he waited some time until the king
was ready to receive him.
9. Then he was ushered (его провели) into the inner courtyard. There sat the king on a stool carved (вырезанный) from
a single piece of tree trunk (ствол).
10. The blacksmith bowed (поклонился) low to the ground. When he rose, the king said, "I have sent for you, the most
skillful blacksmith in the entire land, because I have a very special task to give you."
11. He clapped (хлопнул) his hands and several servants appeared with their arms full of
odd-shaped (странной формы) pieces of iron, which they placed at the king's feet.
12. "You are to take this iron and change it into a man," said the king. "Not just a statue,
but a living iron man who can walk and talk and think, and who has blood in his
veins."
13. Wakaluga was flabbergasted (потрясен). He searched the king's face to see whether
perhaps this was a joke, but the king's dark eyes showed that he was quite serious.
19
14. Everyone in the country knew that the king had the power of life and death over his
subjects (подданные) and that if anyone failed to carry out an order, he would be put
to death at once. "Yes, your Majesty," replied Wakaluga, bowing low once more.
15. The king's servants helped the blacksmith carry the iron back to his smith shop, and
Wakaluga followed them slowly, his eyes to the ground, scarcely (с трудом) returning
the greetings of his friends in the town, who wondered what had gone wrong.
16. Later in the day they came to see him and when he told them what the king had
commanded, they too fell silent.
17. So poor Wakaluga began to think his days were numbered (сочтены). All day and all
night he sat with his head in his hands, wondering how to find a solution to his
dilemma. Of course, a number of people made suggestions.
18. Could he not make an iron shell (оболочка) of a man and persuade (убедить)
somebody to get inside it and speak and walk? Should he run away to a far country
and begin life afresh (заново) where nobody knew him?
19. Someone even suggested he pay the palace cook to put poison in the king's food,
since Wakaluga himself would surely die within a few days unless the king died first.
20. Poor Wakaluga! None of these suggestions would do at all. He became ill and thin,
since he could not eat or sleep, and began roaming (бродить) the bush (по бушу)
alone, speaking his thoughts aloud as he tried to think of a plan to save himself from
death.
21. One evening, as he walked through a deserted stretch (пустынный участок) of bush,
he heard weird (странное) singing. Going closer to investigate, he discovered a
boyhood friend of his who had now, alas (увы), become mad and lived alone in the
wild country outside of town.
22. "Greetings, Wakaluga," called the madman, who had no difficulty in remembering
the blacksmith, even though (хотя) his mind was so often muddled (путался) about
other things. "How kind of you to visit me here. Come, sit down and share my
supper."
23. The madman was harmless enough, and Wakaluga had nothing else to do, so he sat
on a rock beside him. Together they ate ripe (спелые) berries and some honey which
his old boyhood friend had collected from the wild bees.
24. Wakaluga suddenly realized that this was the first food he had eaten for several
days, and felt better for it, so he decided to humor his old friend and tell him the
story of the king's demand. To his surprise, the other fellow sat quite still and
listened to the end without interrupting.
19
25. "Well," concluded Wakaluga, "that is my story; and if you can tell me what I am to
do, you will be a better friend than any other, for they cannot help me."
26. "I know what you must do," said the hermit (отшельник) almost immediately. "Go to
the king and tell him that in order to make the kind of man he requires, you must
have very special kinds of ingredients.
27. You will need a special kind of charcoal (вид угля) and you will need a very special
kind of water.
28. Ask him to make all his subjects shave (побрили) their heads and bring their hair to
be burnt into charcoal and when you have one thousand loads of such charcoal,
then that will be enough.
29. Then tell the king that you must have one hundred pots of water made up from the
tears of the king's people, since only such water may be used to keep your fire
burning at exactly the right temperature."
30. When the madman had said this, he laughed uproariously (громко смеялся) for some
time. The blacksmith tried in vain (тщетно) to thank him for such good advice and
then hurried off to the king's palace, in spite of (несмотря на) the lateness of the
hour.
31. He bowed low before the king and explained what he must have before he could
begin work on the iron man. The king was quite agreeable.
32. He sent messages to all his subjects the next morning, commanding them all to
shave their heads and to deliver their hair to the castle to be burned for charcoal
and also to weep (плакать) into their water-pots.
33. The people did their best (старались изо всех сил), wondering why they must follow
this strange request, but not daring to disobey (не смея ослушаться) their powerful
king, everyone shaved their heads and wept as much as they could into their water-
pots.
34. But try as they might, it was impossible to collect more than two pots of tears or
even one load of charcoal. When these results were brought to the king, he sighed
(вздохнул).
35. "Alas (увы)! I can see that we shall never be able to collect all the charcoal and the
water that Wakaluga needs. Send for him to come here at once."
36. With shaking legs Wakaluga approached the king. As he looked up, he was relieved
(с облегчением) to see a smile on the king's face.
37. "Wakaluga," he said. "You have asked something impossible. I see now that my
people can never grow enough hair to produce one thousand loads of charcoal, nor
19
weep enough tears to fill one hundred water-pots. I therefore (посему) free you from
your task."
38. "Your Majesty," replied Wakaluga. "I am indeed grateful to you, for you too, asked
something impossible of me. I could never have made a living iron man, try as I
would."
39. Then all the people laughed, realizing how clever Wakaluga had gotten out of his fix
(из затруднительного положения), and the king allowed him to go home and to
continue his work at the blacksmith shop.
40. But Wakaluga never forgot that it was his friend's advice which had saved him, and
saw to it that the madman never went hungry or thirsty to the end of his days.
