Mentalism, www.e-mentalism.com Disclaimer: ‘This collection of "ESP Gard Tricks" aims to provide the reader with a variety of options for their stage or impromptu shows. It is important to clarify that we do not claim originality in this booklet. Instead, we have gathered practical methods that have long been used for performing tricks with ESP cards. Our contribution lies in compiling them within a single cover for the convenience of magicians who wish to showcase different techniques while maintaining the enchanting effect of ESP card tricks. It also serves as a resource for readers seeking the method that best suits their requirements. ‘We have not attempted to credit the originators of these tricks due to various factors, including the passage of time and conflicts over authorship. Our goal is to avoid causing further controversy. ‘While we provide some hints and suggestions for patter and presentation, we have not included complete patter. We believe readers are better suited to create patter that aligns with their own needs. IF EXECUTED PROPERLY THE SECRET TRICKS REVEALED INSIDE THIS EBOOK WILL MAKE PEOPLE BELIVE THAT YOU HAVE SUPERNATURAL POWERS. ‘The technical aspect of the tricks is simple, requiring no sleight of hand. However, it's essential to project intense concentration, as if tapping into an ‘extra sense, to convincingly make people believe in your abilities. “Grunt, foam at the mouth, and otherwise get psychic.” - Theodore Annemann (Prolific magic and mentalism inventor). START HERE ‘Throughout this eBook, when we mention the performer, we are addressing you directly. ‘The spectator refers to the individual for whom you are performing the trick. All you need to perform the tricks in this eBook is an ESP deck (26 cards, five of each symbol). The five symbols are: a circle, a plus sign, three vertical wavy lines, a square, and a five-pointed star. ‘None of the tricks involve using marked cards to cheat. This means that the ESP cards can be examined thoroughly by your spectators and given away at the end of the tricks as an extra layer of deception. Cong EXTRA SENSORY Daa) ‘The ESP cards, also known as Zener cards, were created by psychologist Karl Zener in collaboration with parapsychologist J. B. Rhine in the early 1930s. These cards were specifically designed for use in experiments related to extrasensory perception (ESP). Unlike the cards available in the "magic market," these cards are completely examinable and can be given away at the end of each performance (we recommend doing 50), eliminating the possibility of the cards being rigged in any way. Through experimentation we discovered that we needed cards that were thick enough so that ink would not bleed through. So, index cards were out. We found a pack of blank student flash cards to be perfect. The ones we recommend are made by Trend Enterprises you can purchase them from Amazon.com for about 5 bucks, What is great about this blank flash card deck is that it comes with 56 cards which means that one pack is enough to make two ESP decks. Here is a link to purchase Trend Blank Flash cards on Amazon.com ‘To make the cards you'll need a thick black marker and 25 blank cards. ‘Draw the five ESP symbols; five cards each of each symbol. On impromptu situations you can use the back of your business cards and a pen or pencil to draw each symbol. Ifyou don't like the idea of using the suggested deck, feel free to use your own deck. ‘However, there is an important point to keep in mind. In this eBook, all the effects and tricks described will work the same, except for one change. If the deck of ESP cards you choose to use has any identifying marks on them, you won't be able to give them away. 1 DIRECT ESP A deck of twenty-five ESP cards lies face dowm on the table. After cutting the deck, a spectator removes the top card and studies the symbol silently. The performer must identify the symbol. Encouraging the spectator to concentrate harder, the mentalist slowly describes the thought of symbol-it turns out to match the spectator's selection. SECRET: Arrange the deck of cards in a specific order: Circle, Cross, Wavy Lines, ‘Square, and Star. Repeat this sequence four more times. After the deck is cut, glance secretly at the bottom card. Their card is simply the next one in the sequence. PERFORMANCE: Remove the cards your pocket and casually present them to the spectator. When showing the faces of the cards, don't let on that there's a special sequence. You might even cut the deok while showing the cards faceup. When you cut the deck, you are not really mixing up the cards-,just changing the starting point in their sequence. Comment on the symbols and point out to the spectator that these symbols have been used for many years in ESP experiments. Place the cards face down on the table. Ask the spectator to cut the deck, and complete the cut, while the cards are facedown. For extra effect, invite the spectator to cut the deck again. Ask the spectator to remove the top card. ‘Now you'll need to get a glimpse of the bottom card. First, take the remaining cards off the table, but don't look at the bottom one right away. As a diversion, ask the spectator to concentrate silently on the symbol shown on the selected card. Meanwhile, take the opportunity to peek at the bottom card as you place the deck back into your pocket. Once you have seen the bottom card, the rest is easy. Use the sequence you established to determine what card the spectator picked from the top of the deck. 10 2 DIRECT ESP (IMPROMPTU) Again, a deok of twenty-five ESP cards lies face down on the table. This time the spectator shuffles the cards as much as he or she wants before cutting and removing the top card. Without touching the deck, the performer looks at the person, and names the symbol they are holding! SECRET: Criss-cross card force. PERFORMANCE: Remove the cards from their case and hand them to your spectator and ask him or her to shuffle, take the cards back and spread them faceup between your hands to show that they are truly at a random order, you must remember the top one. Place the deck back facedown into the table. Ask an audience member to cut the cards but complete the cut yourself by placing the lower portion of the deck on top of the cut-off portion, forming a cross as shown below. Explain that you'll "mark the spot they cut to" as you form the cross. Before allowing the spectator to look at the card, take a moment to distract them with conversation, so they forget what just happened. Once the attention is back on the cards, have the spectator remove the force card from beneath the upper portion of the cross, and note its identity, without realizing that you already knew which card they would choose. 1 3 MAJESTIC DIVINATION ‘The spectator is presented with a set of five ESP cards. The performer stands at a distance and instructs the spectator to select one card. The performer then approaches the spectator and takes the packet of five cards. Slowly, one at a time, the performer shows the cards to the spectator, cautioning them not to show any signs of recognition if they see their chosen card. Bach card is dropped onto the table while the performer maintains a deep gaze into the spectator's eyes. Eventually, only one card remains in the performer's hand - it is the spectator's selected card. SECRET: Before beginning the trick nail nick the back of every card, close to the top border. ‘Shown in the previous diagram are five cards, one has been ‘reversed’ or turned around end for end. When a card is ‘reversed’ we will either see the nail mark on top or bottom. Give the five cards, with all the back designs pointing the same way. Ask the spectator to fan the cards, faces towards him, and choose one of the symbols. Ask her to put the chosen card onto the table. ‘The spectator is asked to close the packet in his hands and put it on top of the card on the table, pick up the packet and cut the cards. If done correctly then his choice will now be the only reversed card in the packet. Do an overhand shuffle when retrieving the cards. Fan the cards, faces towards the spectator and dramatically moves the cards from one hand to the other. The cards should be held up in between the eye-line of the you and the spectator. Held in such a manner, the performer can surreptitiously glance at the back of the cards to ascertain the reversed chosen one. It’s all down to acting then to reveal the chosen symbol. Please be aware: The cards can be freely distributed in the end. The slight indentation from the nail will go unnoticed, and even if it is noticed, all the cards have identical markings, creating the illusion that the marks are merely coincidental. 12 4 CHAOTIC ESP CARD DIVINATION ‘The performer asks a spectator to shuffle and cut an ESP deck into three piles. The performer turns away and instructs the spectator to select one pile, shuffle it, and remember the top card. The selected pile is then turned face-up and placed on top of either of the other two piles on the table. The remaining pile is placed face-down on top of all the other cards. Now, we have a deck where there is a face-up pile of cards sandwiched between two face-down piles. ‘Next, the performer asks the spectator to cut off half of the deck and mix it into the other half. At this point, the spectator can look through the cards to confirm that face-up and face-down cards are randomly mixed throughout the deck. The performer takes the deck from the spectator and turns it over. They run the cards through their hands and astonishingly remove the thought-of card, which was initially chosen by the spectator. SECRET: Start with an unprepared deck of 25 cards. Ask a spectator to cut the deck into three piles. The exact number of cards in each pile doesn't matter but try to make the piles approximately equal in size. ‘Turn your back to the spectator and instruct them to select one pile, shuffle it, and remember the top card. Then, ask them to turn the pile face-up and place it on top of either of the other two piles on the table. Finally, have them place the remaining pile face-down on top of all the other cards. ‘Now the deck is arranged with a face-up pile between two face-down piles. Ask the spectator to carefully square up the deck. Instruct the spectator to cut the deck in half and shufile one half into the other half. ‘They should square the deck after the shuffle and give ita cut. ‘Now, the spectator can look through the cards to verify that face-up and face-down cards are randomly mixed throughout the deck. lcd): 13 ‘Take the deck from the spectator and turn it over. Run the cards from hand to hand, and you'll notice small groups of face-up and face-down cards randomly appearing in the deck. However, you'll also notice something the spectator won't spot: there is a long run of face-up cards in the deck, longer than any other run. Pretending to look for the spectator’s card, study the cards and cut the deck in a way that brings the long run of face-up cards to the face of the deck closest to you. ‘Starting from the face of the deck, run the cards from left to right until you reach the last face-up card in the long run. The next card (a face-down card) will be the spectators card. Dramatically reveal it to them. 14 5 POCKETED ESP ‘The spectator is given a deok of 25 ESP cards and asked to cut them. The performer turns his back, and the spectator is instructed to take a few ESP cards and place them in different pockets. The performer turns around, the spectator puts their hand over one of the pockets, and the performer can correctly divine which card is inside. They repeat this for the other cards as well, the performer divines them all! SECRET: Arrange the deck of cards in a specific order: Circle, Cross, Wavy Lines, ‘Square, and Star. Repeat this sequence four more times. After the deck is cut and the cards removed from top you will secretly glance at the bottom card. Their cards are simply the next ones in the sequence. PERFORMANCE: Spread through the cards showing that you have a deck containing several ESP symbols careful not to make the sequence obvious. If you wish you may give the cards a few false shufiles and or cuts, so long as you retain the order of the cards. Place the cards face down on the table. Ask the spectator to cut the deck, and complete the cut, while the cards are facedown. For extra effect, invite the spectator to cut the deck again. As soon as they say theyre happy, Keep your back turned and ask them to, "pick up the top card and place it in your top jacket pocket, and pick up the next card and place that in your left trouser pocket, and finally pick up the next card and place that in your right trouser pocket.” Which pockets you name will obviously depend on whether the spectator is wearing a jacket. They could just as easily go into a back pocket (if they are wearing Jeans), and the two front pockets. After they have placed the cards in their pockets, turn around, and in the action of handing the spectator the cards to place into a remaining pocket, you can glimpse the bottom card. From there you can again work out which card is in each pocket. Say for example the bottom card is the cross (the 2 in ESP symbols), the card in the top pocket will be the 3 (Wavy lines), the left pocket will be the 4 (Square), and the right pocket will be the 5 (Star). This is simply the following 3 numbers, reversed in order. HO x 15 6 POCKETED ESP(IMPROMPTU) ‘The spectator can shutfle 25 ESP cards as much as they want. Then they cut the deck. ‘Next, they take a few ESP cards from the top and put them in different pockets. After they finish, the performer turns around and accurately tells which symbol is in each pocket! SECRET: We've taken the legendary Criss-Cross card force and amplified it with an. extra layer of intrigue and mystery. After the deck has been shuffled take the cards back and show the faces “the cards are now completely mixed” as you show the faces of the cards remember the top 3 cards and place the deck facedown into a table. Ask your spectator to cut the cards but complete the cut yourself by placing the lower portion of the deck on top of the cut-off portion, forming a cross as shown below. Explain that you'll "mark the spot they cut to" as you form the cross. ‘Before allowing the spectator to take the cards, take a moment to distract them with conversation, so they forget what just happened. Once the attention is back on the cards, have the spectator remove the cards “they selected” from beneath the upper portion of the cross ask them to, "pick up the top card and place it in your top shirt pocket, and pick up the next card and place that in your left trouser pocket, and finally pick up the next card and place that in your right trouser pocket.” After they have placed the cards in their pockets, you already know the identity of each card and it’s placement so be dramatic when revealing each one! ‘NOTE: If memorizing the top 5 cards is challenging, you can simplify it by memorizing and revealing only 2 cards. 16 7 THE MIND’S MIRAGE Spectator is handed an ESP deck and instructed to think of any symbol by just looking at it. With no moves at all the spectator hands the cards back to the performer, who selects asymbol from the deck. The spectator reveals their thought of symbol, it turns out to be the exact same one that the performer has selected! SECRET: Before the show starts, secretly place four symbols - Circle, Gross, Wavy Lines, and Square - in your pocket in that order. As soon as you get hold of the deck, search for a Star card and openly places it in your pocket, completing the "cycle of five." From this, point on, you can produce any symbol that the audience names from your pocket. (> - 7 8 ENVISIONED PALM A spectator shuffles 25 ESP cards and hands one of them to the performer. Neither person looks at the card. After holding the card for a few seconds behind his or her back, the performer correctly identifies the card. SECRET: Out of view of the spectator, hide five additional ESP cards behind your back, maybe under your belt. Remember their sequence: for example, Circle Lines, Square, and Star. Hand 26 ESP cards to the spectator, who will mix them, choose one, and hand it to you ‘without looking at it. Hold the chosen card behind your back and make a swap. Tuck the spectator’s card under your belt between your pants and shirt and remove the first card ofyour secret set. Let's say it’s the Circle. Pretend to use ESP to determine what the card is. State that you believe it's the Circle, then bring that card from behind your back. 18 9 TEST CONDITIONS Asset of five ESP cards is handed out to a spectator who initials the face of each to guard against the performer switching cards. The spectator then shufiles the cards, so the packet is thoroughly mixed. He chooses a symbol from the packet, returns it to the packet, and further shuffles it. The cards are then handed to the performer. Without fail, ‘the performer names the symbol chosen by the spectator. The trick 1s repeated immediately, and once again the performer correctly identifies the chosen symbol. SECRET: Ask the spectator to initial five different ESP cards in the middle of the face. Have the spectator gather the cards, turn them face-down, and mix them. Take the packet from the spectator and spread the cards face-down between your hands. Ask the spectator to choose one card and look at it. ‘While the spectator is examining the card, square up the rest of the packet. Secretly turn the packet around end for end without drawing attention to your action. Have the spectator return the chosen card to the packet. Give the packet back to the spectator and have them mix the cards. Once the mixing is complete, take back the packet and hold it so that only you can see the faces of the cards. Four of the cards will have the spectator's initials right-side-up, while the fifth card (the chosen card) will have the initials upside down. This is because you turned the packet around after the chosen card was removed. ‘Make an impressive reveal of the chosen card without removing it from the packet. If the chosen card was the star, for example, announce it as the chosen card and turn the packet facedown. Offer to repeat the trick and spread the cards again for a new selection. While the card is shown to the audience, square up the packet and turn it end for end. Have the chosen card returned to the packet and ask the spectator to mix the cards. Once the mixing is done, take back the packet and fan it to see the faces of the cards, ‘keeping an eye on the orientation of the initials. Look for the card with the initials pointing the same way as the star (or any other card that was chosen in the first round). ‘There will be only one other card with the initials in the same orientation, and that will be the card chosen the second time. ‘The only exception is if the star (or the previously chosen card) has the same orientation as the other four cards. In that case, it means the spectator chose the star again in the second round. ‘Make the most of this astounding moment when revealing the card for the second time. 19 Go thon 10 SUPERCHARGED ESP CARD Using a mixed ESP deck, the performer randomly chooses a card, writes their initials on it, and then passes it to a spectator who adds their own initials. While the performer turns his back, the spectator places the initialed card anywhere in the deck. The performer then turns around and explains that the initials confer “vibrations”. To demonstrate that this is so, the performer slowly deals cards off the top of the deck. At some point he stops. When the next card is turned up, it proves to be the card bearing the initials. SECRET: Take the borrowed, shuffled deck and hold it face-down in your left hand. Explain that names sometimes have a power of their own. Turn the top card of the deck face-up and place it on top of the deck. The card may be the star. Note in the image below that the star is not placed squarely on top of the deck but is back jogged slightly. Borrow a pencil. Say that you will write your initials on the face of the card. But as soon. as you finish writing, place a tiny dot on the border of the next card, exactly as shown below. ‘Now comes the crucial moment. Remember, the tiny dot is only visible to you, so there's no need to worry about anyone noticing it. Give the pencil to the spectator and instruct them to place their initials on the face of the star card. ‘Once the spectator has put their initials on the star card, flip it face-down and position it on top of the deck. Now, place the deck face-down on the table. Request the spectator to deal cards off the top, creating a pile on the table. They should start with the top G 1b card, which is the star, and continue dealing for as long as they desire. HM once tne spate di tsp dosing instruct tha ota the dealt cards and put them back on top of the deck. By doing so, the card bearing the initials is now buried somewhere within the deck. Onee the spectator has neatly squared up the deok, take it from their hands and start dealing the cards off the top, one at a time. Eventually, you will ‘come across the card that has your pencil dot. Place this card onto the heap of cards on the table. Then, create a dramatic pause before flipping over the next card, which will turn out to be the star card. Ifyou want to repeat this amazing routine, gather the cards from the table and put them back on top of the deck. Afterward, take the star card and position it face-down on top of the deck. Now, you can proceed to repeat the trick exactly as described before. When he has done this, he is instructed to lose the card in the deck. The performer takes back the deck, spreads it face-up on the table and passes his hand slowly above, he suddenly removes a card and marks a large "X" on its face, return this card to the deck, squares it and gives it several cuts. The spectator spreads the deck face- down on the table and removes the card bearing the "X " that he wrote. When he turns this card face-up, he finds the "X" that the performer wrote! SECRET: Have the deck shuffled and cut. When you take it back, glimpse the bottom card. Place the deck on your outstretched palm. Have a spectator remove a group of cards from the middle of the deck, shuffle them, and place them on top of the deck. Then ask the spectator to write a large "K" on the back of the top card. ‘When they have done this, ask them to cut the deck and complete the cut. Invite them to cut the deck several more times. Taking back the deck, spread it face-up on the table from left to right. Spot the original bottom card you glimpsed. Then remove the card immediately to the right of this card and mark a large "X" on its face. Return this card to the deck, square the deck, and give it several cuts. Have the spectator spread the deck face-down on the table. Let them remove the card bearing the "X" that they wrote. When they turn this card face-up, they find the "X" that you wrote! 23 12 ORGANIC MARKS ‘The performer hands a pack of five ESP cards, spectator shuffles the cards, takes a card and look at it, and place it face downwards in the performers hand. The performer apparently feels its vibes, the person puts the card back in the pack, shuffles it, and hands it back to the performer. He looks through the pack, takes one card after another, and appear as if “feeling” them facedown, he discovers the drawn card! SECRET: Take five ESP cards in your hand, let anyone draw a card, look at it, and place it face downwards in your hand. Look at it attentively, seemingly attempting to tap into its energy or essence. However, your true focus lies in closely examining the card's back, searching for any distinctive ‘markings that could help you identify it later, and if there is none you mark it secretly with your nail. Let the spectator put the card in the pack, shufile it, and hand it back to you. You now look through the pack, take one card after another, and appear as if you were “feeling” ‘them, while you search for the mark by which you may discover the selected card. 24 13 UNVEILING THE UNSEEN ‘The performer turns his back, puts the cards behind him and has a card freely chosen and returned to the deck. He turns to the table, puts the deck down and has a spectator cub it. The performer, fully trusting his instinots, proceeds to blindfold himself, blocking any visual cues. The deck is handed to him. He deals the cards face downwards until he puts a card aside face down, hands the deck to a spectator and tells him to turn over the card just put down. It is the card their thinking of! SECRET: Beforehand take a card, a circle for instance and with a pin prick the card on. the face just near the top left corner. This will raise a tiny lump on the back of the card which can be felt with the ball of the thumb as you deal the cards. Put this card at the bottom of the pack. ‘Now, to present the trick, thoroughly shufile the deck without disturbing the bottom. card. Then, turn your back to the audience and place the cards behind you. Invite a spectator to freely choose a card from the deck. Under cut about half the deck, have the card replaced and put the cut on top. Turn to the table, put the pack down and have a spectator cut it further mixing the cards. Have your eyes covered with a blindfold and the pack handed to you. Deal the cards face downwards until you feel the little lump on the back of your card. Put it aside face down, hand the deck to a spectator and tell him to turn over the card just put down. Astonishingly, it will be the very card they had in mind! ‘NOTE: If you're not comfortable with using a blindfold, you can ask someone to stand behind you and cover your eyes with their hands instead 25 14 SECRETS SEALED WITHIN A spectator secretly selects an ESP card and places it among five cards in envelopes. The performer, without seeing, finds the correct envelope names the chosen symbol! SECRET: First, gather the necessary materials for the trick: five ESP cards arranged in order (circle, cross, wavy lines, square and star) five envelopes slightly larger than the cards, and a small object like a bead or grain of salt placed inside one of the envelopes. Perform some cuts with the cards in your hands to create an impression of randomness. Fan the cards in your hand and ask someone to select a card without revealing their choice to you, cut the cards above their selection and place them on bottom of the pack while they are looking at their selection. Don’t try to hide this. It just looks like another cut to keep the cards mixed. ‘Hand the spectator the top envelope, which should contain the small object. Instruct them to seal their chosen card inside that envelope. Then, ask them to seal the remaining cards in the other envelopes. After the envelopes are mixed up, have the spectator hand them to you behind your back. By feeling for the small object, you can identify the envelope that contains the chosen card. ‘Now, begin laying out the envelopes one by one, generating anticipation by discussing the vibrations associated with the chosen symbol. Finally, reveal the correct envelope and show the symbol inside, demonstrating that you have successfully identified the chosen card. ‘To conclude the trick, tear open the remaining envelopes and reveal that they contain the remaining symbols, adding a dramatic effect. 26 15 TORNADO DIVINATION ‘The performer disperses the whole ESP pack on the table, face downwards. He proceeds topick up cards from the table, naming each one before touching it. He hands them to the onlookers, who are surprised to see that he is right! SECRET: Covertly acquire knowledge of the card positioned at the top of the deok. Observe the top card closely as it moves through the deck, scattering all the cards face- down on the table. Begin picking up the cards from the table, confidently stating the name of each card before touching it. Impress the spectators by accurately identifying the cards, Let's assume the top card you glimpsed in secret is the star. Assign the star's name to the first card you choose, but intentionally select a different card, such as the circle. Hold it discreetly, concealing its face from the onlookers. Now, announce your intention to pick the circle. Proceed to select a card that happens to be the cross, leaving you with two cards in hand. If you desire to conclude the trick, declare that you will ‘choose the cross and then retrieve the star, which you have carefully monitored from the very beginning, knowing exactly where to find it. Now you can demonstrate that you have indeed selected the three cards you named. This triok can be modified by allowing ‘the audience to touch the cards you name, but you must either choose the last card yourself or keep the selection process going until one of the spectators retrieves the first card mentioned, which, in the given example, would be the star. 27 16 MATCHED AND PREDICTED ‘The participant receives a deck of ESP cards and is requested to divide or cut the deck at any desired point. Once done, the card at the exact location of the cut is set aside. ‘The remaining 24 cards are then dealt into two equal piles of 12 cards each. The participant 1s invited to choose one of the piles while handing over the other pile to you. ‘Simultaneously, both of you deal the cards face up and set aside any pairs that match in symbol. Once all the cards have been dealt, the prediction card is unveiled, demonstrating that it bears the exact same symbol as the matched pairs. SECRET: The deck must be arranged in a specific manner where the sequence of five symbols repeats consistently: Circle, Star, Square, Wavy Lines, and Cross. This repetition should occur five times throughout the deck. ‘To achieve this, the participant can cut the cards multiple times, as the desired order will always be maintained. After several cuts, the deck is cut one last time, and the card at the cut position is removed and set aside, The bottom portion of the cut deck is then placed on top of the remaining stack. Next, deal out 12 cards for yourself. This action will reverse the order of your cards. The remaining 12 cards are given to the participant, When the cards are dealt, two pairs will consistently match, and these pairs will bear the exact same symbol as the previously predicted card. 28 17 DIRECT ESP PREDICTION ‘The performer shuffles and holds an ESP deck in his left hand. He hands a spectator one of his business cards and asks them to insert it anywhere in the deck as they wish. The performer then cuts the deck at the business card and places the chosen card on their palm, still face down. He turns over the business card to reveal a symbol. The spectator turns over the face-down card to find that it matches the performer's prediction! SECRET: Begin by drawing a force symbol on the back of your business card. Shuffle the deck thoroughly, ensuring that the force card remains on top. You can use techniques like riffle shuffling or overhand shufile control. Hold the deck in your left hand using the mechanic's grip and offer one of your business cards to a spectator. Ask the spectator to freely insert the card anywhere in the deck, indicating where they want you to cut it. Lift the cards above the insertion point with your right hand while holding the lower portion of the deck in your left hand. ‘Demonstrate to the spectator that you separated the deck exactly where they chose, assuring them that there are no quick moves to deceive them. Utilize this moment to ‘engage them in conversation and oreate a brief pause to distract their attention. Place the top half of the deck face down on the table. Take the business card and position iton top of the deck to mark the chosen spot. Finally, place the lower section of the deck on top of the business card, ensuring that the card extends sideways between the two sections. In reality, the business card is now on top of the original top card of the deck, which is the force card. Recap the actions to the spectator, emphasizing the thorough shuflling of the deck and their free choice of where to insert the business card. Highlight that each possible insertion point would have selected a different card. Cut the deck at the business card and place the card that was "selected" face down to one side. ‘Reveal the symbol on the business card by turning it over. Have the spectator turn over the face-down card to reveal that it matches the symbol on the business card. 30 18 DOUBLE DIRECT ESP PREDICTION ‘The performer writes a prediction on a business card which the spectator inserts anywhere in a previously shuffled deck. Let's say the business card is discovered between the two stars. The performer turns over the business card to reveal that he predicted the very two cards above and below the business card! SECRET: Begin by inviting a spectator to thoroughly shuffle the deck, cut it as they please, and perform any other handling they desire. As you take the cards back, casually glance at the top and bottom cards without resorting to sleight of hand. You can openly look at the bottom card while engaging in conversation. Next, shuffle the glimpsed. bottom card to the top, making a mental note of the new bottom card. These two cards will be used for your prediction. ‘You can also openly fan the cards as you casually say, "You have shuffled these cards to your complete satisfaction, haven't you?" With the top and bottom (force) cards noted, you write your prediction on the back of your business card. You then say, "To eliminate any possible doubts, I shall have someone mark the other side of this business card." ‘Have the spectator mark the reverse or printed side of the card (which does not bear ‘your prediction.) ‘Moving forward, say, "The deck has been thoroughly shuffled, and Ihave written something on this card. Could you please insert it anywhere into the deck?" Spread the cards and let the spectator insert the business card wherever they desire. Then have them square up the deck. ‘Now, summarize the sequence of events. "I would like to demonstrate that the business card you marked is still in the deck. Now, I will turn the business card over so you can see that I have written something ont..." As you slightly spread the cards between your hands, locate the business card. Once you reach it, use your right hand to take the top half of the cards, while your left hand retains the bottom half with the business card on top. Flip your left hand over and place the business card, writing side up, on top of the cards in your right hand, as you continue, "...but I won't give you a chance to see what Ive written." Without hesitation, place the left-hand half of the deck face down on top of the business card (and the cards in your right hand) to conceal your prediction. This sequence of moves repositions the business card between the original top and bottom cards (in this example, the two stars). Finally, spread the deck face up, allowing the business card (now with the writing side down) to be clearly visible, separating the two predicted cards. The rest of the effect, relies on your presentation skills. You will choose two stars 31 19 DIRECTO A spectator thinks of a symbol and the performer reveals it! SECRET: To perform this trick, you only need a pack of 5 ESP cards. Simply wrap a rubber band around the cards and keep them in your pocket, ensuring you're always prepared. Begin by revealing the cards, removing the rubber band, and casually fanning through them to display the different symbols on the backs. Hand the deck to your spectator with the symbols facing downward and ask them to thoroughly shufile the cards. Once they finish, instruct them to fan out the cards in their hands with the symbol side facing up. As soon as they do this, quickly observe the top symbol and say, "No, hold the cards up so that only you can see them." Remember the symbol you spotted when glancing at the spread-out cards. ‘Now, ask the spectator to review the symbols and eventually choose one. To aid their concentration, they should remove this card from the rest and place it on top of the deck (your "Key card”) closing the fan so that they are solely focused on the symbol they have in mind. Throughout this process, you can turn your back for added dramatic effect. Instruct the spectator to place the pile face down on the table (or in their open palm if performing outside) and cut the cards several times to thoroughly mix and lose their thought-of card. Fan through them in front of the spectator's eyes. Ask them to deeply concentrate on their chosen symbol. As soon as you spot the "key card," you will know their selected symbol is just above it. With a showman-like flair, reveal the card and astound your audience. Finally, as the grand finale, present the chosen card to the spectator as a memorable keepsake. f 32 BONUS: T: FORCE ‘This is a simple trick that allows you to secretly make someone choose a specific symbol from a deck of ESP cards. In this example, let's say you want the spectator to choose the Star symbol, which is the ninth card from the top of the face-down deck. Hand the deck to the spectator and ask them to choose a number between 10 and 20. Let's say the spectator chooses 16. Ask them to count 16 cards onto the table. Now, take the stack of cards they counted and place them back on top of the remaining cards in their hands. Explain that if they add the two digits of 16 (which are 1 and 6), the sum is 7. Ask the spectator to count 7 cards from the top of the deck, just like before. Once they've done that, instruct them to look at the next card, which is the one on top of the pile they just counted. Tell them to remember this card. Now, have them gather all the cards on the table and shuffle them together. Ifthe spectator followed your instructions correctly, the card they remembered will be the Star (or whatever card you placed ninth from the top). It’s important to note that this trick will not work if the spectator chooses the numbers 10 or 20. Also, remember to ask the spectator for a number "between" 10 and 20. 33 20 MATCHING ESP ‘The performer and the spectator choose cards in a way that's considered completely fair. However, incredibly, they end up selecting two cards that are the same and match each other! SECRET: Hold the deck of cards with the faces towards yourself. Look for two identical symbols next to each other in the deck. Cut the deck at that point, so those two symbols become the bottom two cards when you turn the deck face downwards. Shuffle the deck in any way that keeps the two symbols in their relative positions. Talk about B.8.P. while you shuffle. ‘Extend your hand and ask the spectator to cut off about half of the deck. Both of you shuffle your respective portions of the deck. The spectator shuffles normally, while you make sure the bottom two matching cards stay where they are. Both of you place your shufiled cards behind you. Say, "Each of us will now choose a card from our own portion without looking at it, exchange cards, and then turn them face up behind our backs and place them in the middle of our cards." Bring forward the bottom card from your portion, and the spectator hands you any card from their portion. However, the card they give you will have the same symbol as your bottom card, but it will be face up in their pile. Place the spectator's card on top of your cards, while you take your bottom card, turn it over, and insert it face up somewhere in your pile. Both of you bring your cards to the front and talk about how fair the process has been. ‘You can either run both sets of cards through your hands until the reversed cards are seen, or you can spread both sets on the table like a ribbon. Bither way, it will have a visually astonishing climax. | MEA IN UM 21 THE INCREDIBLE MATCH-UP After genuinely shuffling, cutting, and mixing the deck to the spectator's satisfaction, the performer takes out one card and places it face-down to the side. The spectator then proceeds to deal the deck fairly until only one card remains, which turns out to be an exact match to the card that was set aside as a prediction before the dealing began. SECRET: To perform this trick, start by genuinely shuffling the deck and offering it to the spectator to cut and mix to their satisfaction. Once the deck is back in your hands, fan the cards towards yourself and mentally note the fourteenth card from the left. Make eye contact with the spectator and then glance down at the cards. Remove a symbol that matches the one on the fourteenth card from a range of cards spanning from the fifteenth to the twenty-fifth card. If all flve symbols are within the first fourteen cards, select any card from the lower range, briefly hesitate, place it back within the first fourteen cards, and then re-select a proper symbol. This ensures that the fourteenth card remains in its original position. Without revealing the selected symbol, set it aside and hand the rest of the deck back to the spectator. Instruct the spectator to deal two hands of twelve cards each, with the first hand going to. you and the second hand to themselves. Discard your hand without looking at the faces of the cards and ask the spectator to deal again. This time, both of you will receive six cards each. Discard your cards as before. Have the spectator deal their cards once more, giving each player three cards. Discard your cards once again. ‘Now, invite the spectator to deal one more time. The first card dealt is for you, the second is for the spectator, and the third card comes to you again, leaving the spectator with only one card. Without drawing attention to the discarded cards, reach over and reveal the prediction card that you set aside earlier. Ask the spectator to turn over their card (the one left to them after shufiling and dealing). Remarkably, their card matches the predicted symbol perfectly. The simplicity of this method adds to the surprising impact it creates. Remember to practice the trick thoroughly to ensure smooth execution and maintain a confident demeanor while performing. ++ 35 36
