REFLECTION ON INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Interpersonal communication involves the information, ideas, and feelings being

exchanged verbally or non-verbally between two or more people. It is the exchanging of
information, meaning, feelings, and opinions between two or more people via verbal and
non-verbal means. Interpersonal communication is the most important kind of
communication. It happens when two individuals are in close proximity to each other, and
they are able to provide immediate feedback to one another. It is the way we express our
thoughts, feelings, and ideas to the people around us. Interpersonal communication is
something you need to do well as it affects many aspects of your life.
Interpersonal communication is used in every part of life. From the moment you
wake up in the morning to the second you fall asleep at night; it is a guarantee you have
used interpersonal communication in some way. Interpersonal Communication can be
used in your workplace, no matter where you work. It can occur in your personal life.
Interpersonal communication has even found an outlet in the most recently developed
form of communication, the Internet.
Interpersonal communication consists of any exchanges between people – this
can be face-to-face but can also exist online or over the phone. The messages people
get across to each other can be verbal and nonverbal – we communicate not only
through what we say but also through things like body language, tone of voice, facial
expressions, and gestures.
It is essential since interpersonal communication skills can improve your
personal and professional relationships by helping you to express your thoughts and
convey your intent clearly. Additionally, you’ll be more able to understand and empathize
with others due to your listening skills.
Two significant learning points for me in this topic, using the I-language instead of
you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings, and emotions to others. To
take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on the I language rather than the You
language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others.
The second learning point is mindful listening. We often fail to realize and make sense of
listening as the missing element in communication to help resolve a large or small
portion of their problems.
Being a school head, I have to develop my skills in interpersonal communication
hence it can make or unmake good and harmonious relationships.
In conclusion, interpersonal communication is fundamental in building good
relationships at the workplace which in turn contributes to an increase in productivity.
This will lead to better salaries for the workers hence improved living standards and the
welfare of the workers will be catered for in an appropriate manner.
