3. Measurements and adjustments

3.1 Adjustment

The ULS 132 must be adjusted after a new installation or the replacement of defective markers or microphones.

The adjustment is performed with the ULS 132 Service Tool.

The service PC and the APB advanced processor board are connected with cable using the ULS 132 interface
cable.

The service tool is called with <servuls>.

See chapter 5 Operation Manual ULS 132 Service Tool for a detailed description.

3.2 Temperature adjustment

The Temperature adjustment has to be performed to compensate the influence of the temperature and humidity
of air on the sound velocity and therefore on the accuracy of the whole system.

To rememeber: the higher the humidity of air the higher the sound velocity.

To perform the temperature adjustment the actual room temperature is to be measured with a thermometer.

In the ULS service tool, the menu item Calibration in the Control menu is selected, the current room temperature
entered and confirmed with <Ok>. The system now determines automatically the distances of the calibration
marker to the four microphones. The displayed values must be confirmed by hitting any key. This calibrates the
system and automatically compensates changes in room temperature during the measurement.
The reference routes of the reference and localisation marker must be used to check the entered temperature.
To do so, select menu item Check-Distance in the Service tool menu Data.
Six numeric values which must correspond to the distances of the marker are shown there. The values are
calculated from the ultrasound measurements.
The nominal values for the reference routes are recorded in the following table:

Ref Mar Trans Mar

Distance
1 0.1400 0.0800
2 0.1400 0.1077
3 0.1400 0.1077

The values displayed in the service tool may deviate by ± 0.0005m from the nominal values, but should
correspond to the nominal values as a mean value.
If this is not the case and the measured mean values are smaller than the reference routes, a higher
temperature than the measured one has to be entered and confirmed with<OK>, in order to compensate the
influence of the humidity of air.
This has to be done by trial and error. First try a value of +0.5°C to measured room temperature. If this is not
enough increase temperatrure in steps of 0.5°C until the measured mean values correspond to the reference
routes.
Do not increase entered temperature more than +4°C to the measured room temperature, if this seems to be
necessary first check the whole system.
The more accurate this step is performed the less error will occur during operation.

3.3 Phantom balance

The phantom balance is used to determine the vector from the reference transmitter to the real F2 of the
LithoTron.

Caution!
The phantom balance is relevant for the measuring precision of the ultrasound localisation system and must be
performed carefully.

The ultrasound phantom is placed into the transducer holder instead of the ultrasound transducer.

The X-ray phantom of the LithoTron is fastened to the ellipsoid.

The menu item F2 Balance is selected in the Control menu of the service tool.

Now the desired number of localisations for which the average shall be determined is entered. It is
recommended to use the default of 10 measurements. Confirm input with <Ok>.

The ultrasound phantom is now applied to the X-ray phantom and the entered number of localisations
performed. Both the microphone holder and the localisation transmitter should be moved to different locations
between measurings.

When the phantom balance is terminated, the mean value of the measurements of the three coordinates is
indicated under µ and the standard deviations of the measurements under s. The value of s must be < 1.0 mm
before the phantom deviation can be accepted as valid.

Important !
The F2 Balance window must be exited with <ESC> so that the phantom deviation is terminated.

3.4 Verification of precise localisation

• Remove the adjustment tool from the US-
transceiver holder and insert the US-transceiver.
• Remove the F2-phantom from the therapy head.
• Couple BV25 and ESWL carriage and move the
table in therapy position.
• Close the table cut with a plate or equivalent and
place the US-phantom on the table.
(The phantom must be filled with normal water
35°C to 45°C).

• Position of the US-phantom.

position data with pushing to the US–

controller.
• Fix the US–positioning transmitter at the
accessory rail by using the transmitter holder.
• Press the switch at the US–transceiver holder.

• Move the phantom with the use of the control X-ray image
panel in the F2 postion (X,Y,Z=0), as shown at
the control desk.
area of tolerance
• Check with x-ray in PA and CC position that the
top of the phantom is in the F2 position ultrasound phantom
(tolerance ± 3 mm)

Cx
Note

B
D
The rather large tolerance value is caused by
propagation time deviations, depending on the water
temperature and the coupling angle of the transducer
with respect to the phantom pot.
The failure of the location system itself is by far less
than ± 3 mm. The standart deviation will be checked B
for acceptance by the software during the phantom
calibration.
Fig.: X-ray image

Example:
The demanded tolerance is ±3mm (circle with 6mm diameter (D).
The real distance between the inner tips of the cross wires is 8mm (A).
The measured distance on the monitor (inner tips of the cross) is 18mm (B).
The scale (C) = B/A = 18mm/8mm = 2.25
The dimeter of the measured circle (toleance) on the monitor
= CxD = 2.25x6mm = 13.5mm

The markers are each inserted into the respective retainers and can be pushed out after disassembly of the
whole component. The cables are soldered to two pins of the markers; the markers are then sealed with mixed
adhesive. For replacement, the bottom cover of the markers must be opened mechanically which could ruin the
defective marker. The cable must then be cut off as close as possible to the soldering position. The replacement
marker must be soldered to the cable; the polarity must be observed, afterwards the bottom part of the housing
must be filled with mixed adhesive and the bottom cover pressed on. Remove overflowing adhesive. Make sure
that the position of the marker is exact parallel to the surface in which the marker is mounted.

After hardening of the adhesive, the marker must be pressed again into the retainer and the component
assembled again. A quick-curing epoxy resin (e.g. UHU plus sofortfest) must be used as mixed adhesive. A
phantom balance must be performed when a marker of the reference transmitter was replaced. The localisation
precision must be checked with the ultrasound phantom (see chapter 3.3) when a marker of the localisation
transmitter was replaced.

4.3 Data Aquisition Board DABE

When a microphone does not supply raw data and the cable connection is found to be o.k., either the
microphone or the DABE is defective.

Only a 0 is indicated for a microphone in the service tool in the Data menu under menu item Mean/Raw.

To make sure that the microphone is not defective, plug the microphone connector of a different microphone into
the DABE. If the DABE continues to supply zero data, the DABE is defective, otherwise the microphone. The
corresponding error messages displayed in the service tool are E 34 to E 37.

The defective DABE is pulled out of the IFU and replaced by a new one. The DABEs are supplied calibrated.

5.4 Control

5.4.1 Window

The screen is divided into various sections:

Menu: The uppermost line is the command selection line.

Mode: Contains various status information. They are as follows:
“I/O Mode” - the actual mode (Watch or Service)
"Litho-Mode" -
“Last 2 Err” - the latest two errors, respectively the latest two warnings which appeared.
“COM” - the number of the interface that is set.
“/” - operating sign, shows that the connection to control is active.

5.4.4 Main menu CONTROL

5.4.4.1 Mode select

The mode select is done through the pull down menu Control.
After activating the program, the “Watch-mode” becomes automatically active. The condition of the different
signals are cyclically monitored and prompted on the screen. By selecting the menu item “Service” , the PC as
well as the MC switches to the Service mode. The “Output” window changes its color the cursor jumps to the
first field for input. It is now possible to alter the value of the actual selected field. For example, if the field
shows a “0” (zero) and one puts in a “1” and press “ENTER”, the condition of the given control signal will be
altered.

Note:
No plausibility tests could be carried out, which means that each is responsible for his/her own input.

Switching back to the “Watch mode” in the PC is indeed possible; it will however not transfer the control back to
the “Operation mode” !
To do so the user must make use of the RESET on the Advanced-processor board (APB).

5.4.4.2 Calibration
