DEEPENING YOUR PERSPECTIVE EECA NE Je Adam an Ee el peopl? Satan cal . real? Though the Bible teaches the reality of all FIRST CATECHISM hee, many people doubt their existence. Satan's basic QUESTIONS 33-35 technique is as old as sin: he persuades people to deny the truthfulness of God’s Word. That is where he began with Eve. ‘Adam and Eve sinned by eating the one fruit God had forbidden in the Garden of Eden, Eating fruit is not inherently sinful, but disobeying God is. The fundamental nature of sin is the refusal to believe, trust and obey God. Tempted by Satan, Eve questioned whether she should believe what God said, trust him to do what was best for them and obey him, Lack of conviction that God’s Word is absolutely A tecdorbelceholvand ue and requires absolute obedience opens the door happy they became sinful © conformity tothe world’s values and practices. Even anduniserable. many professing Christians believe Satan's lies that a woman's right to choose supersedes God's command not to murder, or open-mindedness is more important than truth, or those who adopt sinful lifestyles are fit for leadership roles in God's Kingdom. Satan did not blatantly ask Eve to worship him. Through subtle temptation, he drew her away from God by persuading her to followher own desires. Satan can “masquerade asan angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14), pretending to do good. He often ensnares people through false teachers who speak convincingly but distort God's truth. The effects of sin were immediate. Adam and Eve's guilt and shame caused them to from God. No longer could they enjoy perfect fellowship with him or with each other (Genesis 3:7). When God confronted them, sin’s tendency to multiply became apparentas each refused to accept personal responsibility but tried to shift the blame, God’s punishment was swift, severe and appropriate (Genesis 3:16-19). The immediate spiritual death of separation from God would eventually be followed by physical death. Every partof them would be affected by sin, but the specific punishments God declared struck the core of their being, for sin corrupted the basic roles for which he had created them. The areas in which they should have experienced their greatest fulfillment—Eve as wife and (a ' - mother and Adam as worker—became hard and painful. A glimmer of God's saving mercy penetrated the darkness of judgmentand punishment when God declared that the woman's offspring would ultimately defeat sin Christ Jesuscame into the and Satan (Genesis 8:15). Let volunteers recite the answers, or ask all the children to answer About the Lesson Though the Bible tells us little about Satan's rebellion, itis mentioned in 2 Peter 24 and Jude 6, and possibly in Isaiah 1412. Satan tempted Eve through her appetite, her eyes and her thoughts, the places where many sins begin. Since evil had not entered the wor!d, there was no fear or physical danger. (Sin is any lack of conformity to, or transgression of, the law of God.) Display Teaching Aid 6. Say You know the answers to those questions very well! But let me ask you one more: In what condition did God make Adam and Eve? (//e made them holy and happy.) God gave Adam and Eve hearts that always wanted to do what was right, They loved God and they loved each other. And because they were holy, they were happy. But there was someone who did not want Adam and Eve to be holy or happy. He did not want them to worship and love God. {skDo you know who that was? (Satan) Asks Satan God's friend? (Ni, le is God's enemy.) Avery, very Jong time ago, before God made Adam and Eve, Satan was an angel in heaven. The Bible does not tell us a lot about angels, but it does say that God made the angels, and they are to worship and serve him. But something terrible happened—Satan and some other angels became very wicked. They hated God and refused to obey him, so God threw them out of heaven. When Satan saw Adam and Eve living a happy life in the Garden of Eden, he wanted to mess up the wonderful world God had made, and Satan wanted Adam and Eve to obey him instead of God. So Satan went to the Garden to persuade them to disobey God. Satan didn’t go to the Garden looking like a scary, evil devil. He disguised himself. What kind of disguise did he use? (serpent or snake) Eve wasn’t afraid of the snake, because snakes weren't scary like they are now. When Satan talked to Eve from inside the snake's body, he said, “Did God really ell you not to eat from any tree in the Garden?” Eve answered, “We may eat from any tree in the Garden ‘except the one in the middle. God said if we eat from it or even touch it, we will die.” The serpent said to Eve, “You will not die.” Satan was trying to make Eve believe that God had not told them the truth. si Does God ever lie? (ni0) God always tells the truth, sk Who was lying? (Salam) Satan lied to Eve again when he said, “The real reason God told you not to eat that fruit is because it will make you like God, knowing good and evil.” Eve looked at the fruit and saw that it was beautiful and it looked like it would taste good. The serpent said the fruit could make her as wise as God. Eve had to decide whether to believe God or the serpent. sh What did Eve do? (She ‘ook some fruit and ate it.) Avk'Then what did she do? (no) Adam took the fruit and ate it, too. \skDid Adam and Eve turn to the serpent and say happily, “You were telling the truth, Mr. Serpent. We didn’t die, and we're as wise as God”? (110) They felt guilty and ashamed. Before they sinned, there was no evil in the world, so they didn’t know what evil was. ‘They had been holy and happy, but when evil came into their hearts and minds, they became sinful and miserable. They could not, completely love and trust God or each other. The serpent didn’t force Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, — oo and Eve didn’t force Adam to eat it. Adam and Eve each chose to sin, Ash Is Satan still God’s enemy? ()¢s) Satan is real, and he’s evil. Hes our enemy, too. He still tries to get people on his side instead of God’s side. But he doesn’t jump out in front of us and frighten us into doing the bad thing he wants us to do. He usually tempts us with things that look good, like the fruit that looked good to Eve. He may use other people to tempt us, as he used Eve to tempt ‘Adam. He lies, and he tells people not to believe what God says. God doesn’t talk to us out loud, but he has given us the Bible. Don’t believe Satan's lie that the Bible isn’t true. The Bible is God’s Word. Itis true, and we must obey what it says. God had warned Adam he would die if he ate the fruit. Did Adam fall over dead when he bit into the fruit? (10) But when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they died spiritually because their sin separated them from God. They could no longer be close to him. God told them that their bodies would die someday, too. By the power of the Holy Spint living within us, we are able to resist his temptations. they changed when they disobeyed God. Their bodies would get sick and old, and someday they would die. God told them some other ways they would be punished for their sin, but he also told them something wonderful. He promised to send a Savior who would defeat Satan and sin. God did not stop loving Adam and Eve when they sinned. He loved them so much that he promised to send a Savior. God kept his promise when he sent Jesus. Adam didn’t obey God, but Jesus obeyed God perfectly, ‘Then he died on the cross and took the punishment for our sin. If we love and trust Jesus, we will not be separated from God, but we will live in heaven with him forever and ever. Let's listen to what the catechism says about all of this. The team drawing the highest number goes first. Alternate between the two teams as you ask questions, drawing a question number each time from your container. When a player answers a question correctly, he or she gets a hit and goes to first base on that team’s baseball diamond, The player will advance to second base when another batter on his or her team gets a hit and {goes to first base. A player who does not answer correctly goes to the end of the batting lineup, and no one on that team advances to the next base. The missed question is then asked of the other team. A team scores a run each time a player completes all the bases and advances to home plate. Keep score on the board or on a sheet of paper displayed where the teams can see their scores growing.
