My free time
On weekdays, I don’t have much free time. When I get home from school, I usually do my
homework, watch some TV or read a book. My parents bought me a new guitar for my birthday so I
play that a lot too.
At the weekend, I usually relax with my friends, John and Thomas. We really like playing music
together. Thomas plays the keyboard and John plays the drums. John has a set of drums in his
bedroom, so we usually practise at his house. John has also written some songs, so we are practising
them at the moment. My sister sometimes sings with us and we are hoping to play some concerts one
day!
In the holidays, I sometimes go on day trips with my family. I am really interested in science.
That’s why we often go to the Science Museum. We usually go to the beach in August. We always
have a great time, but the best thing is lying on the sand and listening to music on my iPod.

Eating habits in Viet Nam
Meals in Viet Nam - lunch or dinner - must include rice. Traditionally, Vietnamese meals are
prepared by wives or mothers and the whole family is expected to eat. However, families now may
have only one meal a day at home, and it may not include all the family members.
Tastes, cooking methods and dishes are different between the three regions: the North, the
Central, and the South. Nowadays, these differences have become small.
When families do not have time to prepare meals, they eat out. Employees have lunch
somewhere nearby the work places.
Since Viet Nam opened its doors to foreign investors, more foreigners have stayed and worked in
Viet Nam. As a result, more foreign restaurants have been opened in Viet Nam, especially in big
cities.
Young people in Viet Nam now like fast food because of its conveniences. Vietnamese food fast
shops have been opened, and the most successful Vietnamese fast food chain is Pho 24. In recent
years, there have been more Vietnamese fast food chains such as Bun Bo Hue 3A3.

The Temple of Literature is often cited as one of Hanoi's most picturesque tourist

extremely well preserved and is a nice example: of traditional-style Vietnamese architecture.
This ancient site offers a lake of literature, the Well of Heavenly Clarity, turtle steles,
pavilions, courtyards and passageways that were used by royalty. Visiting the Temple of
Literature, you will discover historic buildings from the Ly and Tran dynasties in a place that
has trained thousands of doctors' graduate. It is now become a memorial to education and
literature. Originally the university only accepted royal family members as students before
opening its doors to brighter students. Successful graduates had their names engraved on a
stone stele which can be found on top of the stone turtles.

The Temple of Literature was built in 1070 during the reign of King Ly Thanh Tong
to worship Confucius. This is also the first national university of Vietnam, a Confucian
academy, first for the princes and mandarin only, but later distinction students of ordinary
families also being accepted. This place also honored 82 doctorates who had passed
through a number of exams in feudal ages. Their names, birthdays and birthplaces are
carved in 82 stoles on the back of tortoises. It is well believed that touching the heads of
these tortoises will bring luck.
Temple of Literature is a historical complex, consisting of five main courtyards. The
best feature of the site is the lawns, gardens and lotus ponds. There are 3 gates at the
entrance: the main gate was used by the King, the other two smaller ones used by
mandarins, candidates and lower ranking people. This shows respect for the King and
humility and patience the other side. This is a must see in Hanoi. Opening hours are from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Ticket price is 20,000 for normal people and 10,000 for students.

One of the best historical places I love to visit in Hanoi is the earliest university in Vietnam:
Temple of Literature or Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam. Founded by King Ly Thanh Tong in 1070
in the decades after the establishment of Hanoi as Vietnam's capital, it became the site of the
country's first University, Quoc Tu Giam in 1076.
The opening hour is 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. from November to March, and the rest of the year it
opens from 7.30 a.m to 6 p.m. Also the ticket price for both Vietnamese and foreigners stays
the same with 20,000VND for adults and 10,000VND for kids.
When walking into Van Mieu, the most impressive feature to me is the number of trees here,
some are freshly green; some are shaped together into several giant books.
In Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam local people worship Mr. Chu Van An as he was the first
principal of the first university of Vietnam. He was also among the greatest teachers with
outstanding talent and his kind heart to educate people.
Every year Vietnamese people come to pray for the best oftheir studies, for visitors they
come to see another traditional signature that has been preserved for years.

Chu Van An was born in 1292 and died in 1370. From his childhood, he was famous for his

students. Chu Van An stayed at home and taught himself by reading books, and opened schools. His
school quickly became famous in the region and many students from other places went there to
study.
Emperor Tran Minh Tong invited Chu Van An to be the principal of the Imperial Academy to
teach his crown prince and other students to become talented people for the country. In 1359,
Emperor Tran Minh Tong gave his crown to his son, Tran Hien Tong, who was also a student of

Hue Temple of Literature
In Hue, the Temple of Literature is located on the bank of the Huong River, to the west of the
Citadel, just 1 kilometer from Linh Mu Pagoda.
Hue Temple of Literature was built in 1908 during the reign of Emperor Gia Long, on the top of
a hill. Over the years afterwards, the temple has gone through several major I restoration works.
The remaining of the complex consists of about 50 architectural works, the biggest of which is
the worshiping hall of Confucius.
After going past the main gate, we would see several small houses where kings and mandarins
would stop by to prepare their costumes before going inside to attend the ceremony. At the front
there are two rows of 32 stone tablets bearing the names of 239 successful candidates in National
Examinations organized through the Nguyen Dynasty. Although the monument has been damaged
during the war, the main temple and especially the Doctors’ stone tablets still remain.
Today, people visiting the Temple of Literature can see a unique symbol of Vietnam educational
