Abstract

Solanum lycopersicum is a highly perishable fruit that

deteriorates after ripening. Chemical preservatives extend

the shelf life of fruits. However, the accumulation of these

in tissues has led to health risks. This paved the way for

searching for a new species that could serve as a natural

preservative. Several pieces of research showed that

Auricularia auricula-judae extracts have antimicrobial and

antioxidant potential against microbial agents. Thus, this

study aims to evaluate its efficacy in prolonging the shelf

life of S. lycopersicum. The study has six (6) set-ups, four

(4) of which were the different concentrations of A.

auricula-judae extracts, and two (2) were the positive and

negative control. The efficacy of each treatment was studied

by measuring and comparing the initial and final weight of

each tomato before and after the application of treatments,

respectively. Results showed that A. auricula-judae extract

at 100% concentration had the highest preservation rate and

had no significant difference with the synthetic

preservative, with a p-value of 0.9244, greater than 0.05.
