WORK INSTRUCTION MANUAL - LIFTING AND SPREADER BEAMS
4.0 __ SCOPE
1.1 This work instruction details about Thorough Examination and Testing of Lifting and
Spreader Beams.
2.0 REFERENCES
2.1 ARD AL-WAHRAN Liting Equipment Testing Guidelines AW-test GU-01
22 British Standard , BS 2573, BS 4360

3.0__ INSPECTION
3.4 INSPECTION FREQUENCY: EVERY (12) MONTHS:
Inspection of Lifting / Spreader Beam shall be carried out as described here.
3.2 PRIOR TO EXAMINATION SURVEYOR SHOULD ENSURE THAT,
1, Identification Number & S.W.L are correct and marked clearly.
2, manufacturer’ test certificate / previous certificate of examination is available for
3. Examination on beam to be conducted as follows
- Loose gear and detachable items such as shackles, eyebolts, hooks, turn buckle's
and slings etc. should, wherever possible, be removed and thoroughly examined as
per the appropriate specification,
b- Lifting eyes, bows and bolts etc. should be inspected for wear, distortion or
any signs of cracking,
c- Load attachment points such as hooks fabricated into the beam should be
inspected for wear, distortion or any signs of cracking.
4. Bolted connections to the beam should be checked for tightness. The beam
should be checked for distortion.ARD AL =WAHRAN co.
e- The beam should be checked for localised, physical damage. Particular
attention should be given to hollow sections which may have dents or localised
buckling and to the flanges or structural steel sections.
{The beam should be examined for wastage due to corrosion, Any suspected
‘cracking should be thoroughly investigated as per approved N.D.T "Magnetic
Particle Inspection’ and the report submitted to the Surveyor for review.
REPORTING & CERTIFICATION
4.1 After satisfactory completion of examination, the Lifting Beam shall be colour coded and a
Report of Thorough Examination issued,
4.2 A Defect Report will be issued fo Liting Beam failing the acceptance criteria for Thorough
Examination
5.0 PROOF LOAD TESTING
5.1 FREQUENCY
Lifting / Spreader Beams shall be proof load tested before being put into use, or major
repair, or substantial alteration
5.2 Proof load testing of Lifting / Spreader Beams shall be conducted as described here,
5.3 Prior to proof load testing of Lifting! Spreader beam Surveyor shall ensure,
5.3.1 Identification mark, safe working load are correct and clearly marked,
5.3.2 That the maximum allowable stresses and calculated deflections specified in the
British Standard are not exceeded and that al other requirements.
5.3.3 Load attachment points such as hooks fabricated into the beam should be
inspected for wear, distortion or any signs of cracking,
‘5.3.4 Bolted connections to the beam should be checked for tightness
5.3.5 The beam should be checked for distortion,
5.3.6 The beam should be checked for localised, physical damage. Particular attention should be given to hollow
sections which may have dents or localised buckling and to the flanges or structural stel sections.
5.3.7 The beam should be examined for wastage due to corrosion, Any suspected
cracking should be thoroughly investigated as per approved N.D.T ‘Magnetic ParticleARD ale alae co.
Inspection’ and the report submitted to the Surveyor for review.
6.0 REPORTING & CERTIFICATION
6.1 After satisfactory completion of examination, the Liting Beam shall. be colour coded and
Examination Certticate is issued.
6.2 A Defect Report willbe issued for Lifting Beam failing the acceptance criteria for Thorough
Examination
