OPSOMMING ( Summary )

• A summary is actually a shorter version of the given text.

• A summary needs to be written in YOUR OWN WORDS.

• A summary involves ONLY THE MAIN IDEAS of the text given.

The teacher will give you a text which is made up of paragraphs.


Each paragraph will have a main idea.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN WRITING A SUMMARY?

1. Read the text carefully ( translate the text with words you know in
pencil. This will ensure that you have an understanding of what the
text is about. )

2. Underline the main ideas in each paragraph. By doing this you will
gather what the paragrapg(s) is/are about. This means the main idea.

3. Underline key words which tries to answer :


What…..who…..when…..where…..why….how

4. Write the main idea in your own words.

5. Remove all adjectives, adverbs, figures of speech, examples

6. Write your summary in POINT FORM.( one point for each main idea
in each paragraph )

7. Rewrite your summary and count your words.

8. Your summary MUST NOT EXCEED THE WORD COUNT.


OPSOMMING ( SUMMARY )
HOW TO WRITE A SUMMARY ?
• Read the paragraph (s)
• Decide what exactly the paragraph (s) is about.
This means the main idea / topic sentence / Main
concept.
• Underline the key words which tries to answer :
What Who When Where Why How
• Write the paragraph in your own words (
point form ), explaining the main idea(s)
• Add your word count at the end.
