1.1 - Anglo-Saxon society
The King, The Earls and The Witan
In order to understand the impact of changes which were imposed by
William we must first look at what life was like prior to the Norman
Conquest.
In Anglo-Saxon society the king was regarded as the most senior
individual in the land. In the 1060s Edward the Confessor was the king of
England. As an Anglo-Saxon king Edward possessed a number of
important powers such as:

an Anglo-Saxon king was weak or lacking in authority the Witan could
impose its will upon him, potentially controlling him in the process.
Anglo-Saxon kings also faced this problem with individual Earls.
From time to time the authority of kings was challenged by powerful
Earls who commanded more influence, wealth and land than the king.
Earls were the most important individuals in Anglo-Saxon society after
the king and controlled large areas of England on behalf of the monarch.
These were known as Earldoms. Within their Earldoms, Earls possessed
some powers similar to those of the king:
