1. On May 28, 1938, Dr. Vincent Maddi delivered twin boys born to a young Italian mother and a
Jewish father. However, the tearful mother explained to Dr. Maddi that she and her husband
could not keep the newborn babies. There were already two other children in the family whose
weekly income was $15.
2. Dr. Maddi remembered that a neighbor, Pauline Milasi had begged for a child to adopt. He
then mentioned the twins to her, but the woman could not raise both boys. She chose “Baby
B”, the smaller one of the twins. He was christened Anthony Joseph.
3. When Tony was twelve, one of the neighborhood children accused him. “You’re not Italian like
the rest of us. Your real father is a Jew!” That night Tony confronted Mrs. Milasi who was

4. In 1942, Mrs. Mildred Brooks, a nurse, took “Baby A” called Roger, to live with her husband in
New York. They, however, never legally adopted the boy. Roger knew that he was not the true
son of Mildred Brooks. When he was 15, he learned that he had a twin. He was curiously
thrilled.
5. On a January night in 1963, thanks to the effort of a social worker, Roger and Tony met for
the first time. They were fascinated and amused by the extent of their physical likeness,
tastes, and habits.

each other. For by doing so, each, in a sense, found a missing part of himself.
