Then catch a nutritious snack later on in the morning. Yoghurt, dry cereal, cheeses, or fruit are good choices. What if

the number of hours they spend caring for others is saved in their accounts. When the volunteer reaches the age when
he or she needs help and support, he or she can use the “Time Bank”. This time, another young volunteer will come to
look after them. A time bank is used to record the amount of time spent providing the service. This service could

"STRANGE FOOD" TOUR IN VIETNAM
Harry’s blog
I have been to Viet Nam in two months and I am so in love with this country. This time coming back to my
beloved place, I decided to challenge myself to try some unusual dishes. The experience was incredible!
1. Trứng vịt lộn (Duck in an egg/ Balut)
As described in the name “duck in an egg”, balut is the nearly formed baby duck in an egg. This weird and unusual
Vietnamese food is a nutritious and favourite street food. The image of trying to eat an egg with “bones” and
“feathers” could be horrifying to some people.
The egg is boiled for 5 to 7 minutes and served with Vietnamese herbs, some ginger, and salt mixed with black pepper
in lime juice. Sip on the juice then enjoy the taste of the egg with the salty, spicy and sour sauce, you will never forget
this strange experience. The herbs and ginger also enhance the flavour of this dish so I recommend you must try it
with balut. Amazing!

10
2. Bún đậu mắm tôm
The original version of this unusual Vietnamese food consists of rice vermicelli (bún), fried tofu (đậu), and shrimp
paste (mắm tôm). These simple ingredients make the dish one of the most popular Vietnamese dishes. Until now, even
many local people still find the fermented shrimp paste’s smell unpleasant, while others quickly get addicted to its
flavour when eating it with tofu or vermicelli.
In many restaurants and stalls these days, they add some boiled pork belly, fried spring rolls and other Vietnamese
sausages. The various, colourful ingredients are put carefully on a bamboo plate. A food lover would add some drops
of kumquat, some chilli, and sugar to the shrimp paste and mix it all together. Take the first bite with crunchy fried
tofu dipped in the sauce, and add some bún and chả cốm after that. Don’t forget to eat some herbs. It’s both fatty and
fresh, salty and spicy, crunchy and soft. It feels like a big feast inside one bite. I would say that bún đậu mắm tôm is
worth a try!

Vietnamese Bánh Mì is popular and easy to find everywhere in Vietnam. You can buy it from vendors in the street

crunchy outside, soft and airy inside. People fill bánh mì with a variety of ingredients, such as coriander, fish sauce,
pickled carrots, cucumber slices, chili peppers, pork, ham, pâté and mayonnaise. It is also possible to buy vegetarian
bánh mì. Sometimes, you can eat it with fish, eggs or even ice cream. Vietnamese people enjoy bánh mì at any time of

I just returned home from a year of studying abroad in America. It's only been a few days, and I am already missing
my new friends. I will have to keep in touch and follow them on social media because they were fun to play with and
helped me in school. Sometimes, they would see that I would get really annoyed when I failed my tests, so they started
helping me with my homework. I was lucky to have such great friends. Studying abroad was good because it showed
me how hard work pays off, although it wasn't always easy. One time, I remember how disappointed my mom was
when I told her I did not pass my science test. But, after lots of practice, my English improved, and I started to do
better on my tests, which pleased her.

V. Read the following passage. For each question, complete the notes with NO MORE THAN ONE WORD.
Dear Mayor,
My name is Henry Little. I am the town's energy expert. I have completed my research on new renewable energy
sources and have found a few that I would suggest. Solar panels work great during the day and are very cheap to build.
Wind turbines are clean to run and will work great during the windy seasons like fall and spring. Finally, nuclear
power is clean and can run all day. Renewable energy has many advantages over non-renewable sources like coal.
However, the town should keep a natural gas power plant just in case it's cloudy or the wind stops. A good mix of both
energy sources can help keep the lights on and reduce pollution, so I suggest the town increase the total use of
renewable energy to 70%, close the coal power plant, and keep the natural gas plant.
Henry, the town’s ____(21)____ , completed his research on renewables. He suggested that the town use
____(22)____ because they work great during the day and wind turbines because they are ____(23)____ to run. Henry
also suggested ____(24)____ because it can run all day, and the town should increase the total use of ____(25)____
energy to 70%.

VI. Read the following passage. For each question, write T if the statement is TRUE and F if it is FALSE.
Dear Mayor Khan,
My name is Henry. I recently visited your city, London, England, and I would like you to know how surprised I was at
how clean and beautiful the city has become. On my last visit twenty years ago, the pollution was so terrible I had to
stay inside the hotel during the day, and I could not exercise in the park. Now, the air is cleaner and easier to breathe.
It was also great to see the dirty coal plant replaced with solar panels and wind turbines. I read in the newspaper that
the city now gets 60% of its energy from renewable energy sources and will add another 20% by 2030. These changes
make London more eco-friendly, and visitors like me notice the difference. My only suggestion to make the city more
eco-friendly would be to reduce the use of natural gas for cooking.
