Migration-refers to a movement of a person from one geographical location to another.

Formal Community- established by organizations to achieve some specific objectives.

Informal Community-formed by the members of such groups by themselves.

Civil Society- pertains to the third sector of the society aside from the government and
the business sector which includes civilian population moving towards a common end.

Organization-entity, such as a company, an institution or an association, comprising of


one or more people and having a particular purpose.

Activism- act of actively engaging in a certain purpose intended address issues and
effect change in the process.

Marginalized Sector- the component of the economy that is unregulated by government


or organized economic activity.

Local Community-group of interacting people sharing an environment.

Social Justice- distribution of resources, opportunities, and privileges in society in a fair


and balanced.

Community Engagement- the act of collaborating with and through groups of individuals
to address problems affecting their well-being. These groups may be connected by
geography, a shared interest, or other circumstances.
Community- A dynamic social grouping who's member settle in a specific geographical
space, common political institution socio-economic activities and share common cultural
views.
Community Dynamics- Share common physical space. A structure that function and
interact with each other that lead to the formation of socio-cultural political and
economic structure that influenced life.

Community Action- includes various activity that empower and develop the community.

Community and its Five Functions


1. Production-Distribution-Consumption
=economic process
=communities provide its members livelihood
2. Socialization
=shapes social behavior
3. Social Control
=social pressure
4. Social Participation
=association and involvement of community members
5. Mutual Support
=motivate each other

TYPES OF COMMUNITIES

1. Formal communities- formed when people come together to accomplish specific


goals and objectives.
Examples of formal communities. Academic, Recreation, Retirement.
2. Informal Communities- informal group is formed when two or more people come
together to accomplish a specific task which is mainly socially geared.
Examples of informal communities. Ecovillages, Co-housing communities, Co-ops
communities. Religious communities,

3. Urban communities- basta city but smaller. High density of population.

4. Rural Communities- low population density

5. Global communities- world

6. Sectoral communities- ex. economic sectors

7. Social Space communities- physical or virtual space

Sense of community
Term by McMillan and Chavis(1986), the term means "a feeling that members have of
belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared
faith that members"

Four Elements of Sense of Community:


1. Membership- refers to the feeling of belonging or of sharing a sense of personal
relatedness. It consists of 5 attributes:
a.) Boundaries-allowing others to belong and keep others out.
b.) Emotional safety-feeling of security and trust.
c.) Sense of belonging and identification- members feeling that they belong, fit in, and
are accepted by the community.
d.) Personal Investment- sacrifices made to maintain membership in the community.
e.) Common symbol system- represent the community such as emblems, ritual, rites,
rites of passage, dress codes, etc.
2.Influence-refers to the sense of having importance or of a feeling valued wherein
there is balance between members feeling that they have a say in the community and a
community has the power to make its members conform.

3. Integration and fulfillment of needs- refers to the feeling of fulfillment, which stems
from personal investment that members make in maintaining community membership or
in participating in community activities and affairs.

4. Shared emotional connection- refers to a sense of shared cultural and heritage and
the feeling that common experiences will continue to be shared in the future.

What is a sense of shared identity?


-refers to the extent to which team members feel the same of who they are as a
designated group.

What is the meaning of sense of identity?


A solid sense of identity means that you know who you are, what you value and how
you see yourself in society. There are many components of our identities, such as
religious, political and gender, among others, and knowing yourself fully is essential to
feel integrated into society.
