LET’S OBSERVE, LISTEN AND READ
ACTIVITY 2
Analyze the text and answer the questions below

People in Britain love technology. In a new survey of people in the country,

researchers found:
 there are four computers in the average British household.
 six out of ten people say their life is better with technology.

The researchers also say that new technology has changed our world forever.
Modern communication is a good example of this. For example, have you ever
telephoned from a public telephone? Have you ever written a letter by hand?
Many people haven’t done these things or they don’t do them anymore. Some
of the answers to these questions were: ‘Yes, I have used a public phone, but it
was a long time ago. I bought my first cellphone 15 years ago.’ ‘I have written a
letter by hand only once in my life as part of a school project. However, I sent
more than three thousand emails last year.’

In particular, the survey found that young people have never done the following
activities because of modern technology:
1. Telephoned a cinema for the times of the films.
2. Booked a holiday at a travel agent.
3. Used a public telephone.
4. Bought tickets for a concert over the phone.
5. Printed photos.
2
6. Bought a CD.
7. Written a letter by hand
8. Used an address or telephone book.
9. Looked at a map before a car journey.
10. Faxed a document.
11. Paid by cheque.
12. Watched programmes at the time they are on TV.
13. Put an advert in a newspaper.
14. Sent a letter in an envelope.
15. Bought flowers from a shop in the high street.

1. Look at the photo in the article. What is the boy doing? _ _

LET’S UNDERSTAND
ACTIVITY 5
Analyze the use of the present perfect and the past simple.

A. Use of the present perfect

We use the present perfect to talk about something in the past and we don’t say exactly
when it happened.
We often use words like ever and never because they do not talk about an exact time.

E.g., I’ve been to the IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality.

Have you ever experienced mediated reality?

He’s developed 3D user interfaces.

B. Past simple

We use the past simple to talk about something in the past and we say exactly when it
happened. We often use it with past time expressions like last week, yesterday, in 2020.
We use the past simple with the question When …?

E.g., When did you assist the Comic-Con?

My friends and I assisted the San Diego Comic-Con last year.

4
ACTIVITY 6
Analyze the use of already, just and yet with the present perfect.

C. ALREADY, JUST and YET with the Present Perfect

We often use the present perfect simple with already, just and yet to talk about actions
that happened recently, or actions that have not happened but we think will happen.

E.g., I’ve already seen the new 3D gadgets.

We have just been to the Computer Science Fair about Artificial Intelligence.

I haven’t been to New York yet, but I’d like to go one day.
