WE ARE NOT AFRAID TO DIE… IF WE CAN BE ALL BE

TOGETHER & THE SUMMER OF THE BEAUTIFUL WHITE HORSE

F.M- 15 marks

1.Read the extracts and answer the following questions. 2X2=4marks

(A)

“What!” I shouted. “It’s out there in front of us,” they chorused, “as big as a
battleship.”

I rushed on deck and gazed with relief at the stark outline of Ile Amsterdam. It
was only a bleak piece of volcanic rock, with little vegetation — the most
beautiful island in the world!

We anchored offshore for the night, and the next morning all 28 inhabitants of
the island cheered as they helped us ashore. With land under my feet again, my
thoughts were full of Larry and Herbie, cheerful and optimistic under the direst
stress, and of Mary, who stayed at the wheel for all those crucial hours. Most of
all, I thought of a seven-year-old girl, who did not want us to worry about a
head injury (which subsequently took six minor operations to remove a
recurring blood clot between skin and skull), and of a six-year-old boy who was
not afraid to die.

(i) Why is Ile Amsterdam described as ‘the most beautiful island in the world?’
(ii) The statement, “it’s out there in front us,” they chorused, as big as
battleship” refers to___________.
A. Seems as if they had won a big battle after journeying through numerous
obstacles
B. A jubilant moment for the whole family and the crewmen after they
reached Ile Amsterdam.
C. The island being referred to is of significant proportions.
D. All of these
(B) My cousin Mourad was considered the natural descendant of this man,
although Mourad’s father was Zorab, who was practical and nothing else.
That’s how it was in our tribe. A man could be the father of his son’s flesh, but
that did not mean that he was also the father of his spirit. The distribution of the
various kinds of spirit of our tribe had been from the beginning capricious and
vagrant. (The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse)
(i) Draw an inference from the phrase ‘A man could be the father of his son’s
flesh, but did not mean that he was also the father of his spirit’.

(ii) According the extract, which one of the following options is correct?
i. Mourad was pragmatic in nature.
ii. Mourad’s father was more naturalistic than Mourad.
iii. Uncle Khosrove more practical than Zorab.
