Network Problems

Requires expert
in each vendor
specific solution

Interworking &
common standards are
OS absent

NE

3
Why TMN is Necessary?

Integrated view of all NE's was missing

Hence TMN is used as a homogeneous
approach to a management of
heterogeneous network

4
TMN Concept

TMN concept is
To provide an organised network structure
to achieve the interconnection of various
types of os's & telecom equipment using
an agreed architecture with standardised
protocols and interfaces
ITU defined an architecture for TMN in
1988
several recommendations were produced in
1992 the architecture was defined to
support both centralised as well as
distributed processing environment
5
Advantages of Architecture

Advantages of architecture are

•Open architecture
• Building blocks
•Easier development
•Inter – operability
•User interface
•Cost effective

Interfaces

Q Interfaces
 F Interfaces
 X Interfaces
 Proprietary interfaces
 User interfaces

12
Interfaces
Q3 - Interface protocol suite defined in
Q.811 and Q.812.
This is the mechanism used by the OS to
collect and disseminate management
information. It is also the most mature
interface within the TMN architecture
Qx - This interface is typically found
between the MD and supporting NE and
QA. An example protocol suite is defined in
G.773

13
Interfaces

WS - Work Station; translates information into

displayable format
DCN - Data Communications Network (Layer1-
3)
MD - Mediation Device; may block, store,
adapt, filter, threshold and condense
information;
QA - Q Adaptor ; connects equipment with
non-TMN compatible interfaces to a TMN
NE - Network Element

14
Interfaces

F - provides a conduit for information

between the OS and WS
X - interconnects TMNs. provides security
features for access control
OS - Operations System; monitor,
coordinate and control telecommunication
functions

16
Configuration Management

It is a set of middle and long range activities

for controlling physical, logical, electrical
inventories, maintaining vendor files
&trouble tickets, supporting provisioning &
order processing defining & supervising
service level agreement
Managing change

17
CM Process

Faces sectionalization by
•Vendors
•Components, and
•Geographical area
•Seems to be the principal burden of
integrating configuration views

18
CM Process

Configuration is considered as the central

process of network management all areas
such as :
•Fault management
•Performance management
•Security management
•Accounting management
are supported by configuration details

19
Performance Management

PM functions are used to moniter the network

so that
•preventive maintenance
•capacity planning
•statistical analysis can be performed
The collected data may be used to correct
potential degradation of the resources so that
quality of service promised to the customer is
maintained

20
Performance Management

The function sets identified for this are

•Performance Quality Assurance
•Performance Monitoring
•Performance Control
•Performance Analysis

21
PM Functions

Performance indicators :
•Availability
•Response time
•Throughput
•Utilisation
•Grade of service
•Transmission volumes
•Offered load
•Channels occupancy

22
PM Reports

Periodicity :Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly
Level of details:Overview [ov]/Comparison [co]
Exception [ex]/Detail[de]
Presentation:Graphics/Bar charts/Tables/pie
charts
Correlation tables/Hit lists

23
Security Management

It includes
Securing management information
Managing the security Information
It is covered in ITU recommendations x.700

Intrusion recovery
Credentials and authentication

26
SM Information Requirement

Authentication
Access control
Data confidentiality
Data integrity
Non repudiation

27
Fault Management

Fault management has 5 main functions :

•Alarm surveillance
•Fault location
•Fault correction
•Testing
•Trouble administration

four steps :
•Problem detection
•Problem determination
•Problem diagnosis
•Problem resolution

32
Accounting Management

It is a process of
•Collecting
•Interpreting & reporting
•Costing & charging oriented information
on resource usage

33
Accounting Management Functions

Identification of cost components

Establishing charge back policies
Definition of charge back procedures
Processing of vendor bills
