The goal of the IEC 61850 standard

Interoperability The ability for IED’s from one or several

manufacturer to exchange information and
use the information for the their own
functions.

Free configuration The standard shall support different philosophies

and allow a free allocation of functions e.g. it
must work equally well for centralized (RTU like) or
decentralized (SCS like) systems.

Long term stability The standard shall be future proof, i.e.

it must be able to follow the progress in
communication technology as well as
evolving system requirements.

GOOSE Applications

Each signal is connected only once which gives minimal wiring

between bays! Efficient use for:
Apparatus position for interlocking
Reservation for control
Auto reclosing signals between sub-systems (start,
block)
Blockable busbar protection schemes (distribution)
Breaker failure protection signals (start, trip)
Voltage transformer supervision for Synchro-check
functions.
Automatic load shedding
Big savings on engineering, cabling and testing.
Simplified exchange between sub-systems (different batteries)
Supervision of signal quality! (validity check gives alarm at
failure)
Efficient engineering with new tools and network supervision.

IEC 61850 - Vertical communication

The communication between Station HMI/SCADA and the IEDs is defined in the IEC
61850 standard.

Data exchanged can be:

• Control (operating primary objects)

• Log
• Reporting of events

Client-server communication

§ Client (HMI or Gateway) can connect to the Server (IED)

§ Client can browse the Server data model and read/write
data
§ Clients can subscribe to reports

Two types of reports

§ Unbuffered

§ Buffered

§ The Server buffers reports for the Client in case of

communication loss.
