NT3 Essay Tips

NT3 is the only major essay that I have not written a Pitfalls and Positives sheet for.
However, the instructions for it were clear and straightforward, and you have learned much
from your other essays. You should now be able to do this!

1. Most importantly, work towards your own clear position, in conversation with
scholarship, and presented in your academic voice. Argue for a definite position
(thesis), tweaking the details as you go.

2. And start the paper with your thesis (answer in a sentence or two), and a preview of
your argument (outline of sections).

3. In every section, state your position first, and then argue for it, interacting with
current, reliable scholarship both for and against it. Dealing well with the best
opposing arguments greatly strengthens your case, and improves your skills for
teaching God’s people.

NOT: ‘Data’ --> conclusion

but

Conclusion (position) --> Justification, using only as much ‘data’ as you need to argue
your position and show you have considered the range of thoughtful positions.

4. A final suggestion: Consider joining up with a couple classmates so you are each
doing a different question. Meet together and explain your developing thinking
along the way. Ask each other questions as you go. Explain your confusions. And
push and prod each other along in love. This will sharpen your thinking and skills.
And learning a couple friends’ topics will give breadth to your own understanding of
Romans and Paul.

And as always, I am happy to meet with you at any point in this process to assist, except
after 4:30pm on the due date. . . )

The academic coach is telling you to fly on your own. You can do this.

Of course, keep in touch as you need.

Warmly in Jesus
