Richard: Hi, Grandpa Frank. I’m studying the history of our family here in Arizona.

Can
you tell me the story about your grandfather again?

Grandpa Frank: Sure! In 1882, my grandfather Shamus traveled to Tombstone. He lived in

New York City. He was only 20 years old, and he was excited. He wanted to become rich
in Tombstone.

Richard: How was his trip?

Grandpa Frank: It was very long and difficult. First, he took a train for 11 days to Tucson.

Richard: How were the trains in 1882?

Grandpa Frank: They were very crowded. Many poor people traveled west because they
wanted to become rich. It was his first train ride, so he was scared.

Richard: How was Tucson at that time?

Grandpa Frank: It was small in 1882. Many hopeful people came to find work. Some
people also went to Tombstone because it was a rich town.

Richard: What did he do next?

Grandpa Frank: Tucson is 115 km away from Tombstone, and there was no train. He took
a stagecoach to Tombstone for 3 days! The trip was very scary because Arizona wasn’t
safe.

Richard: Wow! He was very strong! He traveled for a long time!

Grandpa Frank: Yes, he was. Finally, he arrived in Tombstone. He was tired from his trip.
He was also worried. He didn’t have a lot of money. He wanted to find a job.

Richard: What happened after that? How was his life in Tombstone?

Grandpa Frank: His life was good. Shamus was very lucky. He found a good job at a
general store. He saved a lot of money. After that, he became the store owner. Then, he
bought land and he became a farmer. Finally, he married my grandmother, Emma. They
had two children.

Richard: Really? How did they meet?

Grandpa Frank: Emma came to the general store. She was very pretty and intelligent. She
was the teacher at the Tombstone school. Shamus was nervous when he talked to her.
They were lonely, so they were happy to meet.

Richard: Wow! That’s a nice story. Thanks Grandpa Frank.
