Why do we use Hebrew names like Yeshua? Or sometimes include the Hebrew
names for God like Yah? Because understanding these ancient names and
cultures helps us unlock the richness of each Biblical account – a richness and
understanding that can get lost, changed, or watered-down when only seen
from a modern Western perspective.
For example, Matthew 26:34 says… “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me
three times.“ In its cultural and historical context, this was not actually a rooster
crowing but the Temple Crier, a priest who announced the morning Temple
services and sacrifices at the time of Yeshua. Did you know the modern English
name of ‘Jesus’ has only been used for 500 years? This means Mary and the
disciples would have called the Messiah by His actual Hebrew name, Yeshua or
Yehoshua, which means, ‘God saves,’ or ‘God is my salvation.’ Isn’t that wonderful!
So…let’s take a trip back in time and enjoy the richness of the Bible!

10. In which book of the Bible do we find the story of Lydia? ..............................................................
Thyatira was the name of an ancient Greek city in Asia Minor, now the modern Turkish city
of Akhisar. At the time of Paul, it was famous for its dyeing facilities and was a center of the
purple cloth trade. Archaeologists have found inscriptions relating to the guild of dyers
among the ancient ruins of the city.
Paul met Lydia in Philippi with other women along the riverbank. Lydia was originally
from Thyatira, a busy merchant city of guilds. It is likely that Lydia learned her trade there.
Although purple dye can be made from the madder plant, the only true purple colorfast dye
at that time was made by the murex snail. Making purple dye was expensive and
took a long time. A snail’s gland secreted one drop of liquid, so it usually
took about 10,000 shells to make a small amount of dye. No wonder
purple dye was costly! As a result, purple dye was only purchased by
royalty and wealthy people who used it to stripe a border of their
garments. Lydia’s clients would have likely been among the richest
people in the city.

Before the time of Paul, discipleship was already a well-established process within Hebrew culture.
To become a disciple, you first had to finish Bet Midrash. This was where boys aged 13-15 studied the
entire Tanakh (Old Testament) while learning the family trade. Boys who finished Bet Midrash were
then invited by a teacher (Rabbi) to become his disciple. These disciples were known as talmidim and
they learned everything from their teacher. They ate the same food as their teacher ate, they learned to
keep the Sabbath the way their teacher kept the Sabbath, and they studied the Torah exactly the same
way as their teacher. A disciple had four jobs; to memorize his teacher’s words, to learn his teacher’s
traditions and interpretations, to imitate his teacher, and after he was fully trained, he would become a
teacher and teach disciples of his own.
“Every disciple fully trained will be like his teacher.” (Luke 6:40)

During the 1st century AD, Roman merchant ships frequently sailed across the Mediterranean
Sea. They sailed directly from one place to another, or from port to port along the coast,
picking up new cargo and passengers as they went. Most ships were powered by rowing
or by sailing. Sailing ships were rigged with a square sail (usually a single large sail), or two
square sails on two masts. Square sails allowed vessels to sail continuously at a steady speed.
Sailing these merchant ships was not easy. Without a compass or modern GPS, mariners
had to have advanced knowledge of navigation. They relied on environmental observation
(the sun and stars), and a good understanding of wind patterns and direction in a variety of
weather conditions. A common piece of equipment was a lead sounding weight, used by
mariners in Acts 27:28. “They took a sounding and found twenty fathoms. A little farther on
they took a sounding again and found fifteen fathoms.” Using this weight, seamen were able
to estimate the water depth and take samples of the seabed.
This information was used to help maintain a course or to know
when land was nearby, even if it was out of sight.
Read Acts 27:27-32. Why do you think the seamen used a sounding weight?
